Yes, from the technical viewpoint both JVM and CLR suck from implementation of multiple languages. However, Sun has never cliamed otherwise. Microsoft is marketizing the supposed CLR language interoperability like it's an inalianable human right.
There's a theory saying that, if we ever figure out the Universe, it will be immediately replaced by something even more complicated. There's another theory saying that already happened.
I can't wait to try Civilization III. Playing FreeCiv is becoming slightly boring.
I have recently played Call to Power 2, and I must say that even FreeCiv is much better. CtP's combat and AI are unbelievably stupid. All you need to conquer the world is a bunch of artillery (even catapult will do). The problem is that you can have many defensive units against one attacking. So all you need for winning is to collect a strong army with several defense/bombardment units. You can just walk from one enemy city to another, bomb it, and after several turns walk into it. And that has completely ruined the play.
Disabling the popups is great, now is there a way to circumvent those annoying sites that maximize the browser window?

Why can't you keep your stupid wars over there?
Oh, but the stupid wars weren't "theirs", if you take a better look at the history you'll find the U.S. was very much involved in every war fought in the past 50 years.
I've been following the news all the time, but some questions haven't been answered yet.
First, what did the flight control know? It seems very strange that the only information we have from the hijacked planes came from the passangers' cellphones. Didn't the pilots have a permanent radio connection to the flight control? I thought that in cases like these they are supposed to inform flight control as a first thing. And if they did, how come that the first confirmation that the planes were hijacked came hours later? If the police new in time, they could have started evacuation immediately and saved many lives.
Second, I notice a strange discrepancy between the courses of action advocated on Slashdot and other "grassroots" forums and what I hear on TV. I'm not talking about "nuke them" folks. I'm talking about calls for the internationalization of the efforts. Creating the grand anti-terrorism coalitions. Multilateralism. That stupid chapter 5 invocation. I mean, this course of action is the ONLY one advocated by every single politician I've seen on TV, and it doesn't seem so obviously superior to the one mostly advocated on Slashdot: Punish the responsible (and some innocent too) and then DISENGAGE from the trouble areas, especially the Middle East, that's how I would spell it.
Why the September 11? Well, here's a list of possible causes. I've picked this from scopesys and filtered to leave everyting that might have pissed off somebody. Pick your choice!

This came down to a comparison of QT to GTK+. We favoured GTK+ mainly because it was C based. We have more experience with C, it is more portable, we wouldn't be exposing C++ interfaces that might cause problems with different compilers and we would still get a nice object framework to work with which is well suited to GUI development.
This is the only reason for choosing Gnome over KDE they mention in the interview that remains valid today. It turns out that KDE suffered because of the well-known failures of C++ standardization.
Their "e" logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen (and where else?) is extremely unpleasant for the eye. People tend to prefer horizontal lines and rounded edges over this sharp and pointed stuff. It looks like a hard metal album cover. I'd have nightmares after working on a desktop like that.
I don't understand this financial NASDAQ mumbo-jumbo. Another
article has more information on their business baseline. In short, they're doing great in their core cable business, but they have been investing and losing heavily in media. Management failure, plain and simple.
If those nano-machines are going to be powered from outside, that's all fine. But that's a far cry from self-sustaining, self-replicating assemblers. As the article explains, breaking the chemical bonds of the atoms you'd use as a part for replica requires some energy. Where do you get it from? When you build the replica, does it automagically contain a battery? Or do you suggest connecting it to some nano electric outlet nearby?
The only solution is to use energy from the environment, either chemical energy (then nanoassemblers only work when submerged in ATP molecules or something) or photons (by photosynthesis). Any other form of energy supply would be destructible. These two supply strategies roughly correspond (suprise!) to animal and plant life, respectively.

All you need to conquer the world is a bunch of artillery (even catapult will do). You can just walk from one enemy city to another, bomb it, and take it. And that ruined the play.
All in all, FreeCiv is currently the best Civ clone in existance, at least until Civilization III is out.
Now that Microsoft has revealed the wide communist conspiracy called FSF, I understand that you want to be as apolitical as possible and just stick to the safe ground of software licensing. But I must ask what really are your political leanings generally, not of FSF as organization but of its members. Here on/. the majority seem to think of themselves as libertarians. What is the situation at FSF?
I agree that rights discussins are not very constructive, but I still don't see how is the structure discussion going to help. People tend to care about rights more than about these "structures". It's obvious from the article that the author didn't get very far with the structures.
What I'd like to see is a thorough comparative analysys of the practical benefits and problems (i.e. consequences) of different approaches. Media conglomerates claim the civilisation will return to the stone age with no intellectual property. FSF on the other hand claims invention will flourish. Is there no way to find out?
Well yes, thanks to the new distribution technologies the music will probably diversify and multiply in the future. But I feel we already have an overabundance of new popular music. It would be interesting to measure how many hours of new tunes are created every day. I bet it's more than 24, which means I just physically can't hear all of it, which means that even more production has absolutely no use to me.
Except, of course, if a) greater quantity leads to greater quality of which is doubtful, or b) I'm interested only in a particular kind of music. The latter is where P2P really shines. I just love the "hotlist" feature of Napster, but any kind of a grouping by musical preferences would do. I don't have to listen to crappy latest hits on radio, I can just pick stuff from people whose preference I trust.
Ah, the prediction: even if the music being produced and marketed doesn't change, the music being listened to will. The audience will diversify.
The reason for mor "porn" is simple: the gaming industry, and the computer industry in general, is much more liberal than Hollywood and any other industry. What exactly is wrong with having more sex?
Oh great! So the new Microsoft's strategy is to FUD only the GNU license and to leave the BSD license alone. Now any self-respectful open-source programmer has no choice but to use the GNU license!
Great, now I can use the Tux keyboard and curse Penguin Computing instead of Microsoft. Maybe I wasn't clear enough: I don't want anybody's ads on my keyboard. I use it to work.
In fact I do use Windows quite a lot, but I still don't see the point of having windows keys in place of Alt keys, which actually serve a useful purpose. For start-menu navigation you can always use Ctrl-Esc and mouse. And I have all the applications I use often on the desktop or the toolbar. Even if I wished for an application quick-access key, I would want it somewhere with the other function keys.
What's amazing to me isn't Microsoft's decision, it was just a part of the Win95 marketing. But why does the whole keyboard industry follow and show their Win95 ads for free?
Why, o why, must every keyboard have those annoying three keys I never use, and in the worst possible place too? I tend to use Alt keys a lot because I use Brief-compatible editors. My keyboard at home is (at least) 15 years old IBM, weighing about 4 kg. But whenever I'm forced to work on some other place and on a newer keyboard I lose half of my time struggling with those damn Microsoft-devised productivity killers.
Does anybody produce MS-free keyboards any longer?
When I first saw the story, I thought of another (and IMO more innovative) programming language/system called Mozart. Would it really hurt to at least check Google for "Mozart programming language" before you name your new project? Not that the original is very original either... If you decide to change the project name, may I suggest not to use Beethoven?
I find this very interesting, this could be the first time that natural science has found something really important to social sciences and philosophy.
I always thought empathy could be the basic notion of ethics. You suffer when you see somebody else suffer, and you feel better when you see somebody else's joy. Therefore when you act to help others, it's actually selfish in a way - you'll feel somewhat better too, not because you're condititioned so by parents and society (Freud's superego) but because of your fundamental biology.
If this is true then humans are in essence good after all. Maybe society is not making us better, maybe it's making us worse.

To quote (by memory) from the Hitchhikers' guide:
There's a theory saying that, if we ever figure out the Universe, it will be immediately replaced by something even more complicated. There's another theory saying that already happened.
And they have some intelligent discussion over there too. Please leave it that way.
