  1. Wow on Love of Unix · · Score: 1

This is one of the coolest articles I have read on Slashdot in a long time.

In such a few paragraphs this O'Reilly author was able to express how I have felt about Unix for so long. Trying to explain why the command promt and editing text-based config files has been the confusion of so many of my friends up until oh-so-resently.

I don't love you Unix, but I do love your [step] sisters! (eg: Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD)

  6. Linux Peaked? on After Linux-Apple? · · Score: 1

One thing that the author constantly assumes is that Linux has made it's peak. I disagree on the bounds that many companies that have vowed support /products for linux have yet to come out with these products. Once these products have been released and a fair ammount of time has been given then we can really tell where linux is headed.

As of yet Linux is somewhat in the same boat as Apple, our hands are somewhat tied. You may say that open source applications are fine and dandy, however people want a name on their products. They want to see the name "IBM" or "Compaq", etc written on the side.

Linux as of yet has no real marketting power / advertising power something that Apple has lots of, (e.g iMac). Right now we have Red Hat (which is too busy makeing deals with IBM, etc) and a highly loyal fan base. We have been extreemly lucky to have a lot of journalists publish good articles about this operating system. However, this still dosen't beat the good ole' commercials on tv.

My predection for when Linux will peak? Probably in 1 1/2 to 2 years. It'll take about one year for big name companies to release serious products for linux and then another six months for windows developers (and posssibly others) to start picking up toolkits. After linux? I'd like to see OpenBSD go on the rise... but chances of that happening? When the install dosen't make your hair turn white. :-)

Hey hey hey... Virtual Desktops have gotta be one of the most useful things people. As a Web Developer I like to have 5 or 6 apps open at once. In win95/98 You gotta minimize them then maximize them.. etc. In Window Maker I just hit alt-2, and I'm good. When I do programming I tend to do the same thing. Often I'll have a tutorial or something open in Netscape, a term, emacs and the app all open at once. Not everyone has a 21' monitor at 1600x1200.

Wait a second... Just because you are a nerd and don't like Jon Katz's articles dosen't mean that every nerd hates Katz's articles. This is flawed logic.

Even if Jon Katz is not a 'true nerd' himself, can he not appeal to nerds? Of course he has, he has proven that. If you don't like his articles, don't read them. Its easy to skip right over articles on /. I personally am a proud supporter of Rob and /. but yet I don't necessarly read _every_ article, not all are appealing to me. Nor do I complain (that much) about the borring ones (hey we can't be good all the time). If you don't want to do that or can't do that then you aren't _required_ to read /.

One of the important lessons of life is to deal with things you don't like. Theres lots of things I don't like (like Win95 @ work), but yet I'm able to deal with them.
