canadian coins and laundry money

Making Change

Here in Canada, we have 1, 5, 10, 25, $1 and $2 coins. Our laundry machine in the basement takes $1.75. Best combination is to use a $1 coin and three 25c coins. To satisfy my quest for always having enough laundry money I end up doing mental arithmetic to get back 25c coins and $1 coins. For example, I get the wierdest looks from teller clerks when I hand them $1.02 when the bill is $0.77. They punch in all the numbers and then get a look of "I see now!!" when the change comes back as 25c. So, this strategy serves two purposes a) gets rid of loose change from my pant pocket b) gets enough supply of 25c and $1 coins
Of course, I could go to the bank and get a roll of coins, but then it wouldn't be that much fun, would it?
Your very first link proves you wrong! Did you even read it?"In Canada, handguns have been licensed and registered since the 1930's"
Maybe I should have used the words (almost totally) illegal. The second sentence after that reads:
Handgun ownership has been restricted to police, members of gun clubs or collectors. Very few (about 50 in the country) have been given permits to carry handguns for "self-protection."
It would be an absolute nightmare (even more than it already is) for the US to have pot illegal and for Canada to have it legal.
Right... Same as cuban cigars are illegal in the US and legal in Canada. And exactly opposite to handguns which are legal in the US and not in Canada. Here's another firearm comparison for you.
Gnucash is a good program, but you better know how to use your ldd command to get the bastard installed. It relies on so many libraries that a newbie would get fed up with it and run quicken.
Great program when running, but horrible to get it there.
Hmmm... Maybe its time for you to try a new Linux distribution. Or you can continue to suffer if you prefer. As some others have pointed out:
In Gentoo:
emerge gnucash
In Debian:
apt-get install gnucash
Furthermore, in Gentoo (and possibly in Debian as well), you can also see what are the missing dependendencies which will be installed.
emerge -p gnucash
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies...done! [ebuild N ] gnome-base/libghttp-1.0.9-r3 [ebuild N ] dev-libs/slib-2.4.3 [ebuild N ] dev-libs/g-wrap-1.3.4 [ebuild N ] gnome-extra/gal-0.24 [ebuild N ] gnome-extra/guppi-0.40.3-r2 [ebuild N ] gnome-extra/gtkhtml-1.1.10 [ebuild N ] dev-lang/swig-1.3.16 [ebuild U ] dev-util/guile-1.4-r3 [1.4.1] [ebuild N ] app-office/gnucash-1.8.2
I already updated my installation 4 hours ago, the FreeBSD folk are fast:)
As the subject says.
And as many others have pointed out, slackware, debian ALSO have it fixed. So, its not ONLY the FreeBSD folk that are fast.
Incidentally, my Gentoo ebuild for samba (currently marked as ~x86 -- means unstable for those new to Gentoo) appeared in the portage tree, yesterday when I rsynced at 10:34am. The Changelog has a reference to the security update. The ebuild file itself was created almost 22 hours, 44 minutes ago.
Satisifed now, are we? (Actually, I did notice the smiley at the end of your sentence, so just maybe I'm taking this opportunity to plug my preferred distro)
Its a very interesting discussion, however, could you be a little bit nicer next time (and don't make us work harder than we really have to -- lazy by nature, aren't we?) and make it into a link.
In addition to amanda, I have good luck with star coded by Jörg Schilling. star is very feature-rich, fast, standards compliant and has been around since 1985. Give it a try!

An otherwise informative and to the point post has been rendered useless by you not using the A HREF tag. Copying-and-pasting URLs wastes time (not to mention the embedded spaces to weed out)
You have a serious knack for writing, and I mean that sincerely. (Better than any/. editor or book reviewer that I can recall). Perhaps some of these professionals (sic) should take a cue from your writing style.
I really enjoyed your narrative of the events. Keep it up.
Then you need to get this Excel spreadsheet for Free Ontario Tax spreadsheet. Once done with the spreadsheet, print out a copy for yourself and then use TELEFILE to file for free.
Way back when altavista was the only game in town, around 1998, babelfish was the only useful translation mechanism. I happened to come across this fun post which took the output of fortune, fed it to babelfish to translate into a different language and then fed it back to babelfish to translate back to English. Using command-line switches you could specify French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian.
This examples goes from English to German to English to French to English. It was hours of fun to see fortune cookies go from (this is all from the groups.google post):
Flon's Law:
There is not now, and never will be, a language in which it is the least bit difficult to write bad programs.

Law Flon: There is not now and never, a language will be, in which it is few bits, which are difficult to write false programs.
Loi Flon: Il n'y a pas maintenant et jamais, un langage sera, dans lequel c'est peu de bits, qui sont difficiles d'ecrire des programmes faux.
Law Flon: There is now and never, a language will be, in which it is little of bits, which are difficult to write false programs.
I had a slightly sanitized version of the code (strict, warn, my variables, etc.) from the one listed in the c.l.p.m newsposting, and I could look for it on my CDs (this is from an ex-employer) if anyone's interested.
Can someone mod the parent down? As pointed out in several other replies to the parent, there are NO.iso files available for the Advanced Server. Just the SRPMs.
Metalog works pretty good for me, YMMV, but I have been using it for more than 6 months. AFAIK, the current metalog does not support remote logging, however, it is planned to be added in the future. A quote from their site regarding its capabilities:
Metalog is a modern replacement for syslogd and klogd. The logged messages can be dispatched according to their facility, urgency, program name and/or Perl-compatible regular expressions. Log files can be automatically rotated when they exceed a certain size or age. External shell scripts (ex: mail) can be launched when specific patterns are found.
Metalog is easier to configure than syslogd and syslog-ng, accepts unlimited number of rules and has (switchable) memory bufferisation for maximal performance.
Maybe large passenger aircraft manufacturers (like Boeing and Airbus) could redesign the structure of those aircrafts so that the whole row of passengers can be ejected and then dropped slowly to the ground using a parachute. Who cares about the cargo, fuel and everything else that's making the plain heavy?
There's plenty of information avaiable on how to tighten a Solaris install. Start with a checklist like this and customize it for your needs. I don't think its four hours of work though.
BTW, I do hope you know about Sun Freeware to pick up freeware for Solaris.
Fluxbox is my current window manager. You can go to any empty area of the desktop and use the mouse wheel to change your workspace. Or you can bind a hot-key to take you to the next/prev workspace.
So, do your nasty business in one workspace. Have an alternate workspace ready with nice Eterms/aterms/xterms/rxvt (whatever is your poison) and you are good to go.

Is Mac OS X Slow?

I am probably too late to the discussion but here goes anyway.
I have seen a lot of comments saying 10.0 was slow, 10.1 was faster, 10.1.5 was even faster and 10.2 is blindingly fast. Yet nobody knows why these improvements are happening. I'm sure they are happening because of Apple software engineers getting more and more creative to make the software faster (since the hardware a'int getting any faster). Still, you don't know what exactly was fixed in the minutest detail from one release to the next.
Dare I say it is a sign of being a zealot if you take everything a closed-source software company throws at you without question. I would take my chances with Linux/*BSD any day where every enhancement is open to scrutiny.
Disclaimer: I do like Mac OS X from what I have heard of it. To the tons of people who have found their dream O/S, congratulations and, in all sincerity, I hope you enjoy your computing experiences.
Too bad that this happened to LFS. I have no experience running an LFS machine but the idea has a certain appeal to me (I am a Gentoo convert however).
I do recall there being one issue, with Mozilla/Netscape specifically, where the filename it prompts you to save is the filename of the *script*. But we got around this using mod_rewrite. So a link like this:
Your "Save As" filename problem is really easy to solve and the magic is again in the headers. So for a totally cross-language implementation of an Excel file to be saved as MyExcel.xls when being returned by a script, you must emit the following header:
Their site works fine with Galeon, Mozilla, and IE. I haven't tried Konqueror. Online banking in Canada is part of most account packages (there are no extra fees just for online banking). An online transaction is counted as a transaction towards your regularly allowed number of transactions (which could be unlimited if you keep a certain minimum).
Totally agree with you regarding fluxbox. However, I disagree with you on a minor point.
atlantis and xscreensaver maybe all nice and good, however you can't beat the look and feel of good old xfishtank with the -d switch which means:
[-d] clip fish, swim on root window
.
Combined with good old Esetroot and you will have fish swimming on top of your root background. In the case of atlantis, I didn't see a way of how to not let it totally obscure the background.
Combined with transparent, borderless, titleless Eterm and gkrellm with invisible skin you can have a pleasing effect.

As good as Gentoo is, some of the Gentoo ebuilds needed to use hints from LFS. A clear example was How to compile Java 2 SDK Source (available from Sun) using gcc3 so that you can use it as a plugin for your shiny new gcc3 compiled mozilla.
Again, I'm very comfortable with the amount of flexibility and ease of use that Gentoo provides me.

Maybe. It seems like it's Unix where the OP likes to waste processes. He could have done the same with:

So for a totally cross-language implementation of an Excel file to be saved as MyExcel.xls when being returned by a script, you must emit the following header:As you can probably tell, the file is named appropriately because of the "content-disposition" header.
