Seriously though, of course Nintendo is working on the Wii 2, but I doubt they'll release it first. The way it looks right now, Sony will be forced to make a move first if PS3 games sill don't look better than 360 games in three years, and they don't manage to gain any ground. It's never the leader who releases a new console first, and Nintendo has been particularly conservative traditionally, so I would bet it won't be Nintendo.

Nothing Nintendo has shown today really rekindled my interest in my, dusty, Wii.

    Mario Kart Online? No? really?

I can't really imagine what they could come out with for the system that will bring back that hype I felt late last year.

I think you're missing what created the hype in the first place. It wasn't you. It wasn't the gamers. It was the old people playing videogames for the first times in their lives. It was the parents, gaming with their kids. It was the kids, getting off the couch and jumping around. It was was the soccer moms, touching a videogame controller twenty years after they last played Pong.

The Wii Fitness thing may very well be huge. This may be the next Nintendogs, the next Brain Training, the next Wii Sports. The fact that most "hardcore" gamers don't really care doesn't factor in at all.

Metroid, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy may all seem like important games, but it's possible that they won't be able to compare to the importance of something casual like the Wii Balance Board.

Well I disagree with the point about a movie being just as good in either format. If you take a movie I love, lets say Batman Begins, I'd much rather watch it on HD-DVD than regular DVD (be it upconverted or not).

But the DVD costs half as much and can be ripped to your Computer and watched on, say, a PSP. Also, you can take it to a friend and watch it at his place. You can't do that with a Blu-Ray or a HD-DVD.

I'm not saying a 1080p movie isn't impressive looking. I'm saying that at some point I forget to notice how 'crisp' it looks and start paying attention to the events unfolding in the movie.

Precisely. As far as quality goes, a movie is either good enough, or not good enough. If it's good enough, you stop noticing the quality after a while. DVDs are good enough.

I'd even say that VHS was good enough in most cases. DVD didn't win becuase the quality was better, but because you don't have to rewind them, and because the quality doesn't deteriorate each time you watch it.

I own a PS3, and the only Blu-Ray movie I own is Casino Royale. I got that for free with the console. Blu-Ray is neat, but I'm not going to pay twice as much for a movie I can't rip to my PSP.

They aren't ports, they are the original games, emulated. What difference does it make how hard it was to release them? The Wii has over 100 games, the PS3 has about a dozen.

Yeah, that sucks. Also, you only have a limited number of chanel slots you can fill.

GCN controllers cost like five bucks, and you want them anyway to play GCN games.

Please note that you're kind of making my point: You implicitly admit that the act of watching a movie with your family doesn't really qualify as important. It's discussing the act of watching which is the actual "family activity." Why not start out by doing something better to begin with, then?

Not sure what your issue is with the controls of Ico since I have played it and read many reviews and never heard one complaint about the controls until now.

It feels like a first attempt at a 3D game. As if it was meant for the PS1. The control is awkward. I guess this was okay back when it came out, but the game just doesn't hold up. Oh, and it has some really ugly graphics.

My point is not that these games are bad, but that they are not really too great, but people always bring them up as some of the best PS2 games.

Yeah, I missed GoW, the Jak games and the Ratchet and Clank games. I'll probably check them out. I do have Katamari and Okami. Okami is awesome, one of the best games I've ever played. Katamari is, well... an acquired taste, I guess. It's original and it's fun, but its not really such a great game. Haven't played Culdcept or Dark Cloud, I'll have to check them ou.

It's funny how the commenters can't even make up their minds what exactly this mythical "hardcore gamer" is. GTA is a hardcore game! But no, a lot of girls play it, and it sold a quantillion copies, so it must be a casual game. Bejeweled is hardcore, because people are obsessed with it and play it for days at a time! But it's an online flash game! It can't be hardcore!

People think FPS are hardcore, but FPS are one of the most common genres. How can FPS be hardcore if everyone plays them?

I consider myself a hardcore gamer. I own about 50 consoles. I own three Arcade Cabinets. And what consoles get the most playtime? The DS and the Wii. I'm playing Animal Crossing and Brain Training and Wii Sports and Wario Ware and Mario Party 8. I'm playing games that are supposed to be for casual gamers! Shame on me!

Meh. This whole "Harcore vs. Casual" argument is bullshit. Developers and Publishers are starting to figure out that there is a sizeable amount of people out there who like games other than FPS. And they're starting to make games for them. But this isn't taking anything away from all the people who want FPS and car racing and shooting aliens: It's making the market larger. If you look at the sales numbers for consoles, the PS3 is selling almost as well as the PS2. The 360 is selling as well as the Xbox. So the market for these consoles isn't shrinking. Yet, the Wii is selling as much as the other two combined. What does that tell us? It tells us that the traditional genres aren't being pushed aside by the new games. They are entering the market in addition to the old genres. We hardcore gamers must not be afraid of Brain Training and Nintendogs. There is no shame in playing these games, and buying Wii Play does not mean that you can't also enjoy Gears of War and Motorstorm.

Let's not be whiny and afraid. Let's be happy that we have more choice, and that our hobby is being enjoyed by more people. Maybe normal people will start laughing at Jack Thompson once they've put hours into Brain Training and Nintendogs, and maybe even played a few rounds of Metroid Prime: Hunters (because who says that casual gamers aren't allowed to try out a few "hardcore" games, too? who knows, this might actually increase the market for "hardcore" games!) and have found out that games are normal pastime and not the work of satan.

I just don't see it. I've never owned a PS2, but I bought a PS3 and I'm now buying all the games I've missed. I bought about two dozen PS2 games - the games that everyone considers the cream of the crop of PS2 gaming - and so far, I'm disappointed. Stuff like Ico, which is supposed to be super awesome, seems borderline unplayable due to the botched control. A lot of games have incredibly bad graphics because (it seems) the PS2 is not capable of antialiasing textures, which leads to swimmy or flickering textures and really hurts the mood of games like Shadof of the Colossus (and why this game got such high ratings I'll never know, you're basically riding your horse through an empty level until you find a huge enemy which promptly kills you). Another fan favourite, God Hand, just seems weird and bland.

Now, there are games I will not play which are probably awesome. I don't think I'll ever play a Final Fantasy. Those games just scare me. I'm afraid if I started playing one, I'd have to play all of them, thereby deleting hundreds of hours of my life. But all in all, I just don't feel the PS2 has too many really great games - 99% of its library consists of boring sequels, uninspired copies of genre leaders, sports games, FPS and movie licenses.

Frankly, I don't think people who owned a Cube missed that much during the last gen, but people who didn't own one missed a few great games.

There are several reasons why the PS2 won - first mover advantage, price, sheer number of games - but the quality of the games just doesn't seem to be the reason.

I'd say that playing Wii (or any console, really, but particularly the Wii) is a "good" family activity because it involves communication, learning how to cope with winning and losing, and learning how to share. Watching a movie, however, is a rather mindless, "selfish" activity.

I'm not saying that you should not watch movies with your kids, and I'm certainly not saying that gaming is better than going out and playing soccer or climbing a tree or learning how to ride a bike, but I am saying that watching a movie with your kids tends towards the "unhealthy" side, and playing games tends towards the "healthy" side, in my opinion.
