Garvey and her family have lived in shelters and hotels since she was a little girl. Seven years ago, they were able to move into a house, but in February 2010, her parents were involved in a car accident. They were forced to leave.
Long and the short of it is that we've allowed a new, hereditary aristocracy to persuade us that our best interests are aligned with theirs.
Oh, they're smarter in many ways than the nobility of the past. They know how to blend in just a bit better, while still flaunting their wealth. They've bent the principles of equality and the perception thereof, and corrupted the American Dream, locking everyone else out, but allowing them to still dream the dream.
This new aristocracy has their fiefdoms in the corporations; they own our government lock, stock and barrel; they keep us at war.
They own the majority of the media and the mediums, and what they don't have yet, they're working diligently to take. And what information and knowledge there is, they ensure not only control of, but fight to make you pay for.
And they've persuaded too many people of this nation that caring for the sick and the elderly is somehow evil; that educating the next generation is a waste of money; that governments are not, in fact, created by men to secure the fundamental rights as described by Jefferson. In fact, they've gone so far as to persuade many of the citizenry that any sort of organization that builds out the infrastructure, education and welfare of the people simply for the sake of doing so is fundamentally evil. They've even gone so far as to pervert Christianity to be a worship of wealth.
And at the same time, we're provided with an ample supply of soma in the form of so-called reality television, video games, professional sports circuses and other thought destroying noise.
That's what's happened to us, and that is why we allow this.
And those who have made issue of it are called dirty, unwashed lazy hippies, or seekers of entitlement - an incredibly ironic term, given that it comes from the rights of the nobility - those with title. They've lumped the terms "fascism", "communism", and "socialism" all into one inclusive bucket, not realizing the extremely significant differences between them, nor that our nation has become ruled by the corporations, nor that a certain amount of socialism is required for a society of the size and with the population density that ours has.
Where your assumption is flawed is that Android is a single device.
It is not.
It is multiple manufactures, multiple OEM's, with multiple provider's layers on top of that. Android is the unification of a dozen other potential "Apples".
Imagine if there were zero interoperability between an HTC from t-mobile and a Samsung from Verizon. Instead, there's quite a high level of it.
Naw, it's more the regularity of the posts, the stock phrases and corporate memes, the timing (seconds after an article appears on the front page, but with perfect grammar, spelling and accurate links), the limited number of accounts that do this, but do it every. single. time.
Amazing how often the first post in an Android thread has exactly the same timestamp as the article, trashes Android and Google, and advertises for Apple.
You'd almost be inclined to suspect that folks are offered some sort of incentives to have an RSS feed, and have responses written up in advance....
... there will be a monopoly. Oh, sure, it'll be comprised of multiple corporations, but there will be a circle of companies that share the set of technologies required to build any software, and if you aren't part of the circle now, you'll never be. That cartel will treat each individual as a division of a corporation while keeping up the appearance of multiple corporations; there will be what will amount to interdepartmental disagreements, but for all intents and purposes, it'll be one big family that no one else will be able to join.
I grew up prior to the Berlin Wall coming down, and the overthrow of the USSR government, and see all the things that we used to be taught made the Soviet Union evil being done to some extent in our own nation:
- Propoganda "news" sponsored by the powers that be - Arrests without warrants - Searches of the innocent - Speech limited, and relegated to certain zones - Science limited by politics - Torture - No habius corpus - Prisons filled with prisoners of arbitrary laws for political reasons (war on drugs, etc)
After all, we've made corporations citizens. So, life no longer even really needs to have physical existence. At least, under our rather convoluted legal system.....
Communism and fascism tend to both be totalitarian, but both are not socialist per se.
Fascism is at it's core power concentrated in the corporations, using the government as a tool of the corporations.
Communism is socialism gone awry, where things are done in the name of the people, and corporations are not really allowed, but the system is still geared towards an elite that is a parasite on the rest of the population.
Socialism can have degrees, but in general a government that takes responsibility for a certain level of care for the people.
Furthermore, there is a world of difference between corporate socialism and socialism for the population. Corporate socialism is what the NAZI's had. Socialism for the population is the Finnish school system and the Danish medical system. China is rather unique, in that has a certain level of socialism, allows a new corporate elite to thrive, but at the core, retains the communist/totalitarian model.
So, at least get your terms right. Precision in language and precision in thought tend to go hand in hand. Of course, those who want all the money and power to go to the corporations are the most likely to conflate the terms, leading to lazy thought that deals only in their definition of black and white; it's newspeak plus plus.
While I too am glad to see such action, at least get your terms right. This legislation hands over control of the 'net to corporations, not the people, nor the government - though the government, by this legislation becomes the instrument of the corporations.
I know that some folks like to use the newspeak-esque conflation of the terms socialism = communism = fascism = evil, but each of those forms of government are quite different.
... the human race shares certain critical traits with these little guys.
Like them, we're creating a cataclysmic event in the biosphere that will probably wipe ourselves out, but allow the next generation of life to thrive.
Unlike them, we out to be able to mitigate the impact of our presence, but while we're smart enough to see what we are doing, we don't have the fortitude to change our ways.
Your post as it will appear in 10 years (after being run through the post post processor):
I just wish they would stop invading every aspect of our lives (Have you kept up with Real Lives of Guatemalan Maids on NBC?) We seem them on TV (Get the new Samsung Smell-O-Vision today!), in our snail (Get Pest Be Gone for your garden!) mail, at the movie theater (try Fandango!), in the movies (Check out the release of Saw XXVII) themselves, along the highways (BP - the clean energy company), on the radio (listen to KRAP in the mornings!), on our new computers (Buy a Dell! Less bloatware than Gateway!), on the internet (did you check your Facebook this hour?), in video games (get Bloody Carnal Pleasures in time for Christmas!), in our email boxes (shop at Office Warehouse for all your shipping needs!), and many more places.
Goodness (come to Mikes Mega Church), when will we be free of Ads?
I understand free (get free stuff from FreeStuff4U.com!) sites require ads (hate ads? try ad away!) to keep up their free services (lonely? call service girl tonight!), so that is annoying but understandable (try Rosetta Stone!) in my opinion (be heard! try BlogMe today!).
We're not even given the ability to tell ad companies (get 10% off on bulk email when you send 100k mails or more at supespam!), [SOPA deleted phrase]. they pop-up (erectile dysfunction? try BoneBHere!), they blare at you from your TV (still haven't tried that new Samsung? Do you hate America?), you can't fast forward (get a free green ray player when you sign up for Comcraps 10 year contract!) or close them to get rid of them (embarrassing skin condition? try Baby's Ass today!) AUGH! (Feeling down? Try soma today!)
Stupid (is your child lagging behind? Use lrn2lrn today!) Monkey (vote for Mikey McHonest!)!

... is to either tear down the patent system, or just allow monopolies/collusion.
Because otherwise, the way things are going, nobody will be able to manufacture anything given this circle of choke holds we seem to have.
We managed not to incinerate ourselves (yet) in nuclear fire, but we sure do seem to be doing a heck of a job of destroying the ecosystem that we are a part of, soiling our nests, devouring our resources like locust on steroids, and generally acting with all the foresight of bacteria in a sealed Petri dish.
Maybe because the clock is run by nerd types? One of the few truly public venues where nerds get to tell the rest of the world how badly they're screwing things up...
Fear not. Soon the warm cocoon of mediocrity will envelop you in its loving embrace, and all your angst will be washed away in a bath of Jersey Shore, Farmville and Twilight.
But that still makes up top of the third world!
Wrong.

If you define though crime as including the use of marijuana to ease one's stress, then we have more thought crime prisoners than they do.
It's a matter of degree.
