    While on this tack, I must repeat that Microsoft is a *drag* on the economy because the Windows machines are so easily infected and even the non-Microsoft users still have to put up with it and waste time/money dealing with the crap that flows over the Internet from Microsoft machines.

    Dropping the tarnish issue here, and looking at doing something about it...

    ISTM that some things *CAN* be done about it. The upstream dudes can monitor very closely to determine the nature of the beast.

    Possibly, preventing the attack, and/or discovering the attacker.

    FOSS can actually play a positive role here.

    Hmmm, revision 1.6 with only *four* obvious changes can only lead one to conclude that one of the revisions was to correct a bug.

    Using the code from 'false', we should be able to reverse engineer the code in violation of the DMCA, and determine what the bug was.

    You DO NOT own the work you hold copyright on - it is the property of society, whose resources you used to create it.

    This is *THE BIG LIE* folks. This is SCO's position in a nutshell. s/society/corporations/

    What *you* personally create is *yours* to control.
    If *you* wish to control it via GPL, that is *your* god-given right.
    If *you* wish to make it public domain, that is *your" god-given right also.

    It is not some other entities right to say what you can or can't do with your own creations.

    Non-Open Source is dying. Plain and simple. There really is no payback, because IBM ultimately will be better off not supporting non-Linux anyway. At some point, depending upon how long this mess drags out, IBM could certainly consider not worrying about losing some 'Trade Secrets' to the world. Especially if those 'Trade Secrets' have decreasing monentary value to IBM.

    But, that's the problem. In the BP (Big Picture), companies the size of SCO are foot soldiers to a company the size of MS. MS doesn't give a damn if SCO dies and millions of dollars are lost, the FUD generated will be worth it to MS.

    You're dreaming. IBM has wasted too much time and money dealing with this mess to just let it drop. What would it buy them? Nada. SCO would just fire up the FUD machine again, and twist the story to make it look like they won, and that IBM lost. Plus, what's to stop SCO from just filing another bullshit lawsuit?

    When you have really nasty pests hanging around, you exterminate them.
