Hmm, interesting argument (accually made me have to waist a few clock cycles thinking about it (no, I'm not a bot)). But I tend to think of buisnesses as legal adult entities, meaning they try not to act like children. Legel revenge in the form of counter-suits is one thing, I might have even supported Amazons use of this patent if it had been used in such a manor.. and I mean might. But, the problem here is if Amazon wins such a suit, they will most likly immediently go after other online retailers with the knowledge that the same outcome would likly be had.
I don't know, computers generally don't get lazy. If you noticed my sentence structure got worse and worse as I went down that list. But then again, maby I was programmed to get lazy. But honestly, I think AI is much better preformed if it didn't have our faults.

I totally hear you, reciently I've been trying to help and ender man learn how to use his computer. (He has a win95 machine, and I'm just barly getting to the point where I can set up myself with a decent linux config) And I learned all kinds of things from teh questions he asked. For example. How exactly do I know when to single click or when to double click? It always seemed quite obvious to me, but in retrospect its really difficult to explain. I finally gave up and told him to double click if single clicking didn't seem to do what he wanted:( hehehe
Isn't it obvious, simply put, Canadian's government isn't nearly as currupt. Any government that would support encryption (non government controled, aka governmnet not having its own key) I would naturally trust. Basically our government doesn't trust us, as we don't trust them. The only problem with this model is that we're no longer the ones in control.. no matter what our initial setup was supposed to be. I know this is horribly late, but I was metamoderating, and ran across this comment, hopefully you'll notice it in your user comments list.
Umm, if I was a parent and I choice that I wanted my kid to be able to play this game. I could go out and buy it for him/her. If I didn't want them to play this game, they won't be allowed to waste their money on buying it, to only have me throw it away. I don't see the problem here. And yes, I still would have to pay attention to what they download and borrow from friends. But I have a hard time seeing as how this takes power away from the parents. Now if I wasn't allowed to buy the game with my kid accompaning me, or have another friend who is over 18 buy it for me, then I would say that the retailers are crossing the bounds, into the lands that movie theators have reciently entered.
The amount of news stories constently being pumped out of traditional news sources has been increasing at an exponential rate. I honestly don't see how the web even as vast and expansive as it is, would have the time to precritic every story. Seriously, imagine if slashdot was asked to examine just.1% of all tech articles that are released. We would be swamped and noone would have any time to do otherwise. Every doctor would be spending vast amounts of time helping medical stories, as well as every lawyer trying to make sure we truly understand each and every legal decision. I'm sure there is a happy medium, and any reporter to specializes in a topic should be expected to atleast observe the general web.
If you really pay attenction, it seems like the script to "Hackers" was created by someone who accually knew a decent amount about computers, and or the hacker community. Its just that when he he was done with it, he obviously handed it over to the movie people and never looked back. But seriously, if you pay attention to whats accually going on instead of what they are trying to visually show you, aka igore the stupid simulations, I really didn't see anything in Hackers that was all that bad. Discounting visual/timeline orineted problems where there anything that was all that unrealistic about the movie.... seriously??
And he keeps trying to claim that MS helped create the Internet. Sigh.
Now see, thats one thing that obviously points to the fact that Gates is dillusional. As just a few years ago, before the creation of IE, Gates specifically said that his company would never use the internet, and that its just a fad. This is after the internet had been around for a few decades. So I really can't see how someone could be opposed to something so heavily then turn around once its popular to state that you helped its creation. Atleast he didn't say he invented it. Gates for 2000!!! HERHEHE sorry
Newton.. hmm kinda an obvious step really there was alot of talk about developing handhelds like the newton, just apple beat them to the punch. Quicktime?? I could be wrong, but I swear there where other computer movie formats before quicktime, but still fairly obvious. Firewire, good idea not enough marketting, though I'm honestly not sure which came first, firewire, or USB. I would have naturally said firewire, but the other day I saw a guys old 486 that came with USB frainkly quite scared me, not exactly sure how old it is, but its an IBM branded computer. (Though in all honesty I'm more impressed with Firewire than USB, but the best technology doesn't always win.)
Much of the law has to do with the fact that someone can't loan money with the knowledge of the fact that it is going to be used for gambling. You might try to make the instantanius argument that Visa had no way of knowning what the money would be used for, and such and such. But that would be a blatent untruth. Visa, or any other credit card company has the right to dissapprove of any merchant from using its service. So if Visa had stopped and considered the law, it should either not allow merchants which offer gambling to accept their credit cards. Or make very specific deals with such merchants as to only accept cards from certain states. This was an oversight on visa part, and it is the one to blame. NOT that I don't think the lady should be SMACKED around a bit:) but on a purly legal status, its still Visa's problem. Though if Visa is smart it will refuse to pay the Online Casino, which is something that by contact Visa usually has the right to do. And in all honesty I'm not about to feel sorry for the Casino for loosing its money:)
I agree, MS accells at creating a user interface (though I still think IE's interface sucks:) But how worthwhile is a good interface for an unworkable product. Thats what I truly appreciate about linux, and is the reason linux is taking absolutly so long in the development of a good GUI. Linux Developers are concerned with getting a product which is rock solid, then we can go back and make it look good. But sad to say, it seems MS works the other way around.
Dude, put down the chalupa. I agree the hardware companies like us to "buy their hardware". And this is only pushed by the fact that the software companies like us to "buy their software". Its an ever ending loop. But in all honestly at the current point the common man can't be expected to produce his own hardware. (btw do you honestly think that the personal computer would have ever came into existence in a non capitolistic society) But anyways, since we Can work together to produce software, we should produce good quality software. If this quality demands high quality hardware, then so be it. But atleast we are finally entering an age in which the slackness of programmers and the size and buggyness of their code are not the driving force in newer hardware (I think thats quake 3's job). Make good software, the hardware will follow, but all in all be patient my son. BTW your a Markist and a Leninist? Is that accually possible?
The only real analogy I can imagine would be the 1-900-big-mama phone numbers. As there was a limited amount of numbers that = usable names now we have added more extentions, just like we are going to add more domains like.cc But the analogy isn't all that useful as I don't think there ever was a problem with number squatters, and the ones that did get huge chucks of numbers payed ALOT for them almost always used them instead of just holding them.
What would be more shocking is lobbying being illegal and then some Congressperson putting up a law for a vote that in order to make internet safe for kids, every web site author must have a license and follow strict guidelines for web page content otherwise lose the license.
Believe it or not, but we have these nifty things called checks and balances. See, if your congressman does something like this, you make a choice not to vote for him/her again. Most of the congress members know this ahead of time, and unless they are from an ultra conservative district they won't vote for such things. Seeing as there atleast 50% of members who are not from ultraconservatives areas, and the ones that are often tend to dislike government regulations in the first place such laws tend to not pass. Secondly where the checks come in place, we also have this nifty guy called the President, who is WAY to concerned about his image, and would veto something like this as long as the people know about it. (more reason for the common people to atleast know what laws are being passed, though it would take way to much time to know every law that is voted on, only a few laws accually reach the president). Next in line we have the Justice branch of government, to rule the constitutionality of such laws. (Though I'm sure the DOJ would love to be able to rule a cut in their pay unconstitutional.. it doesn't exactly work that way:)
I will probably be getting rid of my TR when my next project car is completed.
So John's giving his car away in a Q3 contest this time too.. right??? hint hint nudge nudge (note: I'm trying to suggest he should.. the last one kicked ass) Maby thats what the Q3 arena is all about, its sposed to be a contect arena right?? so the whole point is to win john's car??? hehehe
I'm kinda curious--when was the last time a major media outlet criticized(or at least reported negatively) about a parent company? MSNBC has delivered significant praise to Linux, and I believe has at least truthfully reported on the DoJ lawsuit. I wonder how often this could be said about the media world.
This is just my perception, but could be true. When MSNBC first came on air, they also seemed to be a mouthpeice for MS. Which is exactly what everyone expected. At an amazingly fast pace they seemed to have changed their policies, talking in the matter of days. So most likly they figured out that they could never been taken as a serious news source as long as they where influenced by ownership and advertisers. They seem to be following this new policy rather well, and I have alot of repect for them, and glad they realized they wouldn't last following the old model.
Most of them think its either a "holy war" or "justice". I can sorta understand the justice part, aka sentencing someone to death for killing someone else, but sorry to say, mob rule is so... passé (hehehe). And you know trial by jury is always a good idea:) But anyways abortion was just an example, not my main point. I was trying to show how I see law as it should be, existing to stabilize society. And yes your right, some people do say that abortion destabilizes society. But most of the destabilization is caused by the people who kill doctors cause of it or what not. And the destabilition that the act itself might cause isn't much difference upon society as a whole as the the effects of having it illigal. Its kinda like the war on drugs, causes more problems then it makes. Though my view of drugs differs greatly from my view on abortion, as drugs only tend to hurt one's self when used within the frame of law, and can hurt others when used outside of the frame of law, (aka drunk driver/violence is getting a drug that is declared "illigal") WHOA I just went even farther off topic than you did:) But anyhow one last question, as someone who is "pro-choice" why are laws forcing a minor to atleast get counceling in order to have an abortion considered a "bad thing" (tm). As I see it, it seems to be a law that promoted stability and forces people to think, which in my humble opinion is a "good thing" (tm).:)
Yea that part surprised me when they showed all those kids up infront of a congressional panel. Many I wish I could find a copy of that, had to have been hallarious (note: I quite often get my jollies watching cspan and laughing at the retoric)
Accually laws help to stabilize society. It just happends that the things we consider morally wrong, and generally the most likly to instabilize society, therefor against the law. For instance why do you think abortion is tolerated while murder is not, simply because having an abortion doesn't tend to destabilize society and cause people to commit other crime (GENERALLY) (also note I am against abortion, but I'm also rational and realize you can't legislate morality, and only believe in laws which exist to "stabilize society", though I guess society occasionally does need destabilizing)
