  1. 500 mb is a 3 Hr download for most DSL lines on Rent A Downloadable Movie · · Score: 1

My 400 kb/s download speed is typical for a $39.95/mo DSL line. I'm not going to tie up my line to save the Hollywood guys $1 burning a CD.

DVDs are typically 5 gb. I'm not going to spend 30 hours downloading a DVD on my DSL line. They can send it back to re-write.

  2. MIPS is at a deadend on SGI Installs First Itanium Cluster At OSC · · Score: 2, Informative

The MIPS architecture has run out of gas. All it has left in it is a few more speed bumps. SGI has no money to invest in something that would succeed the MIPS chip. Another note: Why did Compaq dump the Alpha chip ? Because it can't run lock-step, so it cannot be used for Compaq NonStop (formerly Tandem) processors. McKinley chips apparently can be run lock-step, so they will be used for the new NonStop systems.

  3. A whole 8 bytes ? on SBC Wants To Switch DSL Format To PPPoE · · Score: 1

Woohoo - lost a whole 8 bytes. PPPoE MUST be a disaster when it does that. Better call your lawyer.

If you are replying to a clerk that doesn't give a rat's ass about complaints then nothing will happen. If you write to the CEO of the insurance company then something might happen.

I saw it as I was travelling north near Dover, DE. It glowed for over 3 seconds which means it had to be bigger than "baseball" sized.

  6. McDonalds pop-up ads sucks too. on Banner Ads To Become More Annoying? · · Score: 1

You had 5,000 copies running already and you couldn't come up with a copy of the Office95 installer to setup these new PCs ? Start blaming your company rather than Microsoft.

  8. Singapore is a fly speck of a country on National Broadband Access · · Score: 1

Rolling out DSL in a country that is about the same size as Metro Toronto is not comparable to getting access across Canada. Singapore is so tightly controlled that they have banned the sale of chewing gum because someone was jamming the elevators with it.

  9. Show me the H1B bottom feeders making $30,000 on H-1B Visas Increased In 96-To-1 Vote · · Score: 1

Several threads have spoken of H1B holders making $30,000. How many people are you speaking of, and where do they live in the U.S. ? H1B applications are not cheap. Companies can make mistakes, but tend not bringing in people who are under-qualified slackers. All of the H1B applications are required to list the salary that the companies will pay that applicant. Write to your Congressman to see if the average salary (or the range of the salaries) for approved H1B applications is available in the public record. Enough people seem to be interested in this figure. Two posts above mine makes it sound like "little Timmy won't get his soup tonight because daddy can't work in I.T." Where is this person living ? My apologies to anyone named Tim. There are thousands of unfilled I.T. jobs all over the U.S. That is why they are increasing the quota (and doubling the fee). If you really are both unemployed and qualified in an I.T. position, you should be planning on moving to get a new job. I could see if you were making cars or other union job, but sorry, not for an I.T. job. If you are blaming foreigners for taking away your job based around out of date technology, sorry again, you will just have to retrain for something current. Migrations to take new jobs have been happening in the U.S. for longer than the U.S. has been a nation. GET USED TO IT.

  10. A TN visa has to be renewed every year on H1B Tech Visa Workers Being Deported From U.S. · · Score: 1

As a Canadian working on a H1B visa I am aware of the requirements for both TN and H1B. The TN visa requires that an offer letter from the U.S. employer be shown along with a proof that the applicant has a degree that is relevant to the job. It can be renewed indefinitely. The H1B is issued for an initial 3 year period and can be renewed once a year for 3 more years for a total of six years. The person has to leave for an unstated period before he/she can re-enter on a new H1B. An H1B visa can be transferred to different employer for a $500 fee. All the 'indentured servant' stuff in the other threads is crap.

  11. Re:Immigration department overwhelmed on Work Options In The U.S. When Student Visas Expire? · · Score: 1

I have worked in the U.S. for 3 years with a H1B visa. I am paid the same as the locals doing the same tech support jobs for Tandem computers - $60K for a 40 hr week with rotating on call. Decent money for an area that doesn't have sky high housing prices. My employer has had open positions for the whole time I have been here that they can't fill. Last time I looked on the Internet there were 40 job openings I could step into, except most of them say 'W2 only' because INS is such a pain in the ass for the employers to deal with. My employer submitted my visa renewal for the 4th year. The Vermont regional INS processing center rejected the application because they said the beneficiary could not pay the full amount and only the company was allowed to pay the $500 surcharge (imposed by Congress when they upped the H1B allotment), then rejected it again because they said a form was missing (it was stapled to the checks), and now they say they have no record of receiving the application and we have to start all over. Atlanta and Dallas INS processing centers are supposed to be worse than Vermont.
