  1. Re:Rotating Station Would Solve Many Problems on Window(s) on the World · · Score: 1

I don't know this for fact, but I was told by a very reliable source that was the original design for the space station. They were told that it was costing too much and to redesign it to be less expensive. The money spent on the first design plus the redesign ended up costing more than it would have originally and we ended up with a technically inferior space station.

Of course, I could be wrong about this.

  2. Magic Draw UML on Better UML Modeling Tools? · · Score: 1

One package to check out is MagicDraw. I used it a little bit during my OO software engineering class recently and it works pretty well. It's written in Java, but it ran well on my machines (566 Celeron/192M RAM and 500 Celeron/128M RAM). The nicest thing about MagicDraw is the trial period, which is usually around 4 months. That's long enough to take you through the remainder of the semester.

  3. Two of mine on Who Were Your Best Teachers? · · Score: 1

My all time favorite teacher was a man by the name of Ray Gilbert, my college calculus and engineering math teacher. He had retired from teaching full time many years before to run a striping company (painting lines on roads, parking lots, etc) with his sons, but continued to teach at night. Deep down he was a math geek. He told us stories of how before his basketball games in high school he would sit down and do equations because it relaxed him. I can't really put my finger on exactly how he did it, but he made everything make sense. He was also genuinely interested in you learning the subject, but he would only put as much effort into you as you put into the class. He passed away a few years ago of a heart attack and even to this day it brings a tear to my eye to think about.

My second favorite teacher is also one of my current teachers. I've had to take most of my college classes at night. Anyone who's done that knows the quality of the teacher can vary wildly from the very poor to the very excellent. This guy is definitely one of the best. Not only does he teach because he loves to, but he knows what he's teaching. Unlike many night instructors I've had, he also approaches it like a true professional and expects the same out of you. He's so good that I'm taking the classes he's teaching each semester even though that means putting off my degree for a year or so.

  4. Plex86 vs. VMware on Slashback: Plexion, Kernelism, Salaryness · · Score: 2

VMware will be discontinuing hobbyist pricing on December 16th, meaning that if you want a copy, but don't qualify for the academic price, you're going to pay $299 instead of $99. I like VMware, but if I had to pay full price for it I wouldn't have done it.

Plex86 will start to be a more attractive option after that day. If it also means more development activity behind it, that's all for the better.

  5. Anyone remember what CE looked like at first? on Scanning The Landscape Of Palmtop GUIs · · Score: 2

Based on just a quick look of the Qt screenshots, it seems like they're on their way to making the same mistakes Windows CE did when it first came out. One of CE's biggest mistakes was trying to recreate the desktop GUI. I stopped counting the number of times I spent waiting for the stupid screen to draw and this was pretty consistent across CE 1.0, 2.0, and Pro, running on two different machines (one at 33 MHz, the other at 100MHz). I eventually sold both machines, bought a Palm, and I haven't looked back since.

I hope for Trolltech's sake that they're not blindly following CE's path, but rather looking at what it did right and wrong.

It will be nice to have a choice (hopefully) next time I buy my next laptop. After my experiences with three previous ATI cards (Xpert XL, Xpert 98, Rage Pro) in my desktop plus the Rage Mobility chipset in my laptop (Dell Inspiron 3800) I will NOT buy another computer with an ATI product in it ever again. Their drivers are horrible and consistently horrible to boot.

Bring on the new chips, my credit card is waiting...
