The word is torus. We are basically homeomorphic to a torus. So are sheep -- apply a mapping such that the interior and exterior of the torus are exchanged, and the result is called a haggis.
It may not matter. These are just resolutions from school boards. The actual state curriculum gurus are going to vote on the new standards (which include evolution) next month (mid-February, IIRC). If the accept the proposed new standards, things will be looking up here in Florida. If they reject the proposal, then things will remain exactly as they are, as far as I am aware. And "exactly as they are" is not particularly good -- Florida received an "F" rating for its science curriculum recently, though from a group whose pedigree I don't entirely recall. The current lack of coverage of evolution was one of the reasons for the "F". What I find particularly annoying is that the state was apparently prepared to accept the new curriculum, when *parents* started complaining about the teaching of evolution, and may as a result get the whole thing canned. I guess that's what I get for moving to the deep South....
My Panasonic TV is good, but I bought a DMR-E95HS (HD/DVD recorder) recently, and it has been pretty disappointing. It has lots of nice features, but I bought it mainly as a VCR substitute, so I could record what I wanted when I wanted, without having to deal with the extra annoyances that come along with anything Tivo-like. Unfortunately, the firmware in the DMR is not very well suited to that task. Sometimes it won't start recording when it's supposed to, and sometimes it will forget most of its settings, which puts it back into its "Welcome -- please set me up now" mode. It's connected to a UPS, so power problems are not an issue. I discovered too late that a number of people in web-land are having similar issues with this model, and there appears to be no fix forthcoming from Panasonic. Makes me a little wary of whatever their next software-driven device may be....
They both also have exactly four letters. Clearly, it's a conspiracy.
Shouldn't that be murdererize?

Yes, it's me. I thought throwing that in there might shake a few people out of the hedges....
Team Wiess!
