Odd. Do all the MLB teams play three times as many away games than home ones?
(Yes, i'm sure I deserve the -1 mod point for explaining I was counting home games)
I'm not an expert in MLB, to get the approximation of more than 40-45 I was refered to wiki and noted how many home games some team played. Seemed a reasonable reference point, and my opinion is based on living near Seattle where there was a big deal about replacing the King Dome, and whether to build two stadiums. Given 1 stadium was enough for both football and baseball, and given the number of home games for baseball is far greater than the number of home games for baseball... I like others felt that one stadium was sufficent and priority should have been for baseball. I could care less about most organized sports, but just because I don't enjoy them doesn't mean they are not important.
this essay illistrates my point a tad better even if i'm in disagreement with the author assertion that football is more of a national sport than baseball. According to this essay, I approximate that MLB has 10 times as many games as the NFL with a ticket price being about 2.5 times as much for an NFL ticket as a MLB ticket, where attndance is 4.41 times higher for MLB than the NFL in 2000. While without a doubt TV ratings for NFL are higher, and television income is also higher, and cost to attend a season of football is more reasonable than Baseball, I have to disagree with the author that 1/2 the average attendance per game for baseball is outweighed by the fact that there are clearly at least 10times as many games per season for MLB.
This is rather why I consider baseball to be America's national sport, and not football... as without a doubt more time is dedicated to baseball than football, and it's not just because games tend to be ultra long.
The DRM helps protect the file from illegal copying. However, as with any 'lock', hackers may break it. Those who knowingly tamper with DRM are acting illegally. They may even wear masks and possess secret identities. We discourage any attempt to defeat the copyright protection.
So what they are saying is those who knowing tamper with DRM may attend sci-fi fantasy conventions and are impossible to talk to out of character? I'm sure "Mogot the Destroyer" would be very proud.
I don't know if any other slashdot user has noticed, but those who construct large databases tend to be the ones who listen to Metalica full blast over their headphones. I have never understood as I find it distracting... even not wearing the headphones and being some distance away.
Woah. You're out of touch by more than a factor of three..
There's a reason that Baseball is the hardcore nerd sport. They try to play enough games to make statistically significant findings.
I was off by more than a factor of three as I was only counting home games. I should have been more clear. But the point remains that more time is dedicated to baseball than football.
Why not let the NFL use the DMCA to remove themselves from the view of the public? I'm sure Underwater Hockey or Canoe Polo would love to become the new US national sport.
I thought baseball was the national sport... though refered to mostly as passtime. Acording to wiki football does get higher nielsen ratings than the World Series, but I also know with Major League Baseball there are a hell of alot more games. I believe NFL has a 16 game schedual where MLB has at least 40-45 per season.
You've had three Honda's and they've only lasted for 75K, 120K and 90K and you still keep buying them? Those numbers translate to (approx) 45,000, 72,000 and 54,000 miles.
Honda gives a 100,000 km warranty on all there cars (60,000 miles).
Assuming miles...
Honda says for US models 3 year / 36,000 miles comprehensive 5 years/60,000 on the drive train. The warranty on older cars might have been less.
So... it is possible that this person experenced some sort of failure at 75K, 120K and 90K. In my experence, the 70s and early 80s hondas tended to have issues with the heads warping. I seem to remember the 1976 CVVC had that issue, but the miles were above and beyond 150k. While I might complain, my father was fond of the 1984 Buick... he bought two of them, neither of them lasted beyond 100k due to failing oil pumps AFAIK, and each of them was bought used.
But anyway what I really wanted to chip in with here is that my Subaru has a timing belt, but it also has a non-interference motor (all SOHC subaru motors are non-interference AFAIK.) The others have chains, and that's nice, but I don't really mind having a belt since if it breaks, the only thing that happens is I have to realign the crank and cams when I put the next one on.
Yes, Subarus are nice this way, and nice to work on as well as their engine alignment typicaly is not transversly mounted (if that is the correct term). I would not mind replacing a timming belt in that case, I might even replace it before it breaks. My only issue with Suburu is in the states, they are all 4wd, and models after a certain year are 4wd all the time. I would guess 1989 but this is based on shopping for used cars and not something I know for afact. I've been told that one can pull a fuse to enable 2wd, but i'm not clear on this subject nor have I ever tested it. But either way, i'd prefer something where you are not guzzling 4wd gas when you don't need it.
But for your typical FWD vehicel... in cases where there is little clearence between the wheel well and the water pump / timming chain, and such.... I want a chain, not a belt. Something I don't have to muck with or practicly have to pull the entire engine to replace it... or even worse go with shop rates. I'd rather pull a tranny than do a timming belt in a cramped enviroment.
For the love of god... were talking the days of a 286... which pretty much means that your recording of Brass Monkey came from someone using the mic on their computer to record the playback of a CASSETTE TAPE. To a.wav. At a horribly low bitrate. Enough to fit it on a floppy. There is no way that you could have listened to that and thought it was good... unless you have no ears.
I don't know that demo, nor do I remember much in the way of 286 demos. Not that it wasn't before my time or anything, just my first clone was a 386sx with a 15gig hard drive, so I wasn't too hip to the demo front. But how much in the way of lyrics is "brass monkey"? I "imagine" one could do the midi samples, and a few sound bytes and come out with a half decent result. Such demos for the Amiga, Atari ST, and Mac were most excelent at the time period, and fit on a double density disc.
As for using the mic... I "imagine" one would probally use the line out on their cassette deck, or else a headphone out. After all, all those tape decks for 8bit computers needed a line out.
I have a 95 Civic with 155,000+ miles. 2 timing belts, 1 air conditioner, oil filter and change every 7,500 miles and new air filter every year. I also had a 93 Eclipse that lasted well over 200,000 miles but had to get a 'family' car.
I hate buying cars because they drop in value so fast. Forget getting a loan for a car beacuse you'll need devaulation (gap) insurance for that. You'll have negotiating room if (A) you pay in cash, (B) walk away. Dealers will not let you walk away from moving a car.
I went with a nissan my self... the Sentra uses a timing chain rather than a timing belt. My old car was a 79 corolla which required very little in terms of maintaince over it's 360,000+ miles. It reached the point where I "should" rebuild the head, but to be honest didn't want to muck around with such an old car.
Other family members were slower to jump onto imports. The lovely 90s Pontiac Grand Prix seemed to need a new head gasket every 50k miles. What a serious waste of money IMHO, though in all fairness that car was comfortable.
No, it hasn't. Most chipsets still sound unbelievably crappy, even with cheap speakers.
I'm perfectly happy with my a8n sli motherboard onboard sound. I found it an upgrade to an older SB live value, which IMHO was actually a downgrade from a first generation SB ensoniq in terms of recording audio @ 44.1kHz, and playback without annoying motherboard clicks and pops. The only reason I went beyond ensoniq was so I could play an MP3 and get an incomming IM warning. I can't say it's perfect, but that could be resolved with better shielding. I don't see it as being a chipset issue.
Try testing your sound system by placing your cell phone near it and call your self. This should give you some idea if the present level of shielding is adquate. I find my alarm clock/radio an excelent pre-ringtone warning of an incomming call.
You can find Audigys for $30, and SB Live!s for $15. Sure, Best Buy sells them for $200 with a bunch of "pro" audio software when they brand new, but that's not what they really cost to halfway intelligent consumers, and OEMs alike.
You can find $30.00 Audigys without the game port, even at bestbuy. Great if you don't use it or already have one onboard, not so good if you have expensive legacy controlers like steering wheels. It's the Fatal1ty SB046B that fetches $150. You might be thinking the Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro with the handy dandy 5.25 inch bay for firewire and 1/8inch phono jacks, or one of their more fancy models with external pre-amp and or remote control.
To be honest, I am happy with stereo. My main application is playback, some games, recording tapes/vinyl to cd, which 16bit/44.1khz is adquate. There really hasn't been an improvement on this front so I don't know about the g-wiz features of the entire SB line, but even I can see when someone is pulling a number out of their ass and making a blanket judgement that anyone who disagrees must shop at bestbuy. I have to say I have bought a few things at bestbuy, but only because I got some bestbuy giftcards for x-mas and they did have a laptop HD for a reasonable price.
But there just doesn't seem to be any market for a plain old sound card, just like it's impossible to buy a plain old cell phone.
You "can" buy a plain old cell phone. The nokia 1100 is just that. The only thing fancy it offers is a flashlight and alarm clock. You have to hunt around for one, but they tend to be offered as a pay as you go phone, and AFAIK are unlockable. I'm sure the nokia 1112 is just as basic, but i'm unsure as to how unlockable it is.
It looks like you "can" buy a basic sound card creative CT4730VP Stereo, 16bit sound, few jacks, it looks like the most basic you can presently buy.
They're only the "leader" because they have no significant competition in the after-market add-on card market. Just try and name two other sound card manufacturers.
Others have pointed out diamond I can not say in all honesty I have bought one of their sound cards. Circa 5 years ago the cost of a SB128 was roughly equal to a base end Diamond solution, and there was reasonable assurance that the SB128 would work.
Razer I'm not directly familar with, and at $200 for a base model, I'm not likely to invest in it, well, unless that extra shielding actually does an effective job at eliminating the EM noise generated by the system.
Voyetra Turtle Beach much to my surprise is still around, as spoken of by others, and offer a base $30 solution and a $60 solution.
Asus either has or plans to release the Xonar D2 and D2K, but as it doesn't exist in any form other than a press release, I know jack about it.
Cmedia it would seem not only makes onboard audio but pci audio as well. I "might" have met one released by MadDog, but i'm going by memory and relative look of the card.
There is now a pre-site checkbox "I agree to this site's terms of use and purchace as published in the copyright notice on each page"
Hitting cancel simply says "If you disagree with the terms, you must indicate your disagreement by leaving this site or closing your browser now". with only an ok checkbox.
"
var response = confirm("I agree to this site's terms of use and purchase as published in the copyright notice on each page.");
if (response == false)
{
alert("If you disagree with the terms, you must indicate your disagreement by leaving this site or closing your browser now.");
}
It's not like there is trully any difference if you hit OK or cancel. No redirect to disney if you hit cancel. Nor has she taken the time to construct a robots.txt file.
Checking for bootleg CDs has certain implications that can't be avoided in this context. First, the society is assuming that catching this particular form of copyright violation is roughly on a par with catching heroin smuggling.
What is the going rate for heroin? Is it more or less than a commercial CD? I'm seeing values of about $1.00/mg, and a dose being 10mg to 20mg. I can't say i've ever bought the stuff, nor do I know how many hours of entertainment it provides. I can not argue the distructive value of heroin, and I would agree it has a larger impact on the economy than a bootleg CD. But you can not argue that a bootleg CD doesn't have an impact on the economy and it's effect is easier to measure. A good bootleg can look like the real McCoy and divert funds intended for local industry to overseas pirates. This is exactly why we have customs.
But... I DOUBT highly that the entertainment industry is affected much by home brewed bootlegs. Unless these dogs are sniffing for pressed commercial grade bootleg import media I would agree that the effect on the local economy is so much less than heroin it's not even funny.
Like others I wanted to see if she had a robots.txt file.
http://www.profane-justice.org/robots.txt:
Not Found The requested URL/robots.txt was not found on this server.
Well, no clue if she had one before and deleted it, or never had one. You see she took her entire website down about 10 hours ago save one page. But that's not the point, the point was this person had a somewhat paranoid reaction all the traffic when there was a perfectly logical reason why someone might have accessed it. The site has since changed
"FAQ about Internet Archive - so many of you IGeeks* got your digital panties in a twist, based on inaccurate reports. Goes to show you. ..you shouldn't believe everything you read on a blog site. ..sheesh. Grow a brain and engage it BEFORE you engage your mouth.
Suzanne sez. ..Hey, these *Internet Geeks have made li'l ole me a STAR! I'm blushing. . . see article and blog and blog"
I for one have no digital panties, and i'm sure most of the people who accessed the site did so based on how nuts it is to assume that one can enter into a contract based on clicking a link, but never took the time to phone this person. I would suspect she has already been informed how make sure her data is not archived but either doesn't now how to upload a robots.txt file or would rather enjoy the benifits of trying to extract money from organizations like archive.org for peforming a service not unlike a library. I do also suspect this person was trained in the fine art of always attack never defend, which makes it difficult to offer advice.
But she did make it clear that she wanted news sites and blogs to contact her to get "her side" of the story, and I believe that any "IGeek" who wanted to see for them selves what this lawsuit was about did so without malice. I would leave this person alone, odds are they already got the approperate technical advice which would resolve her issue with archive.org and has elected to ignore it.
No, I think that if you spent about 5 seconds reading her web site, you'd see that she's mentally ill. I don't think it's appropriate to bash people like this, when they clearly don't have a good grip on reality.
If you take the time, she's updated her site.
"NOTICE - this site is being massively "Hit" by misguided people who think I'm terrible for suing Internet Archive." http://www.profane-justice.org/
I don't know if this person is mentaly ill, but I would agree she doesn't really understand how the internet works, and the hits she's received has something to do with her debate with archive.org and that dispute making some major websites. But I suspect most of the traffic are by people like my self who were simply curious as to what sort of information is worth "$5,000 (five thousand dollars)" per printed page.
I can note that she her self doesn't not seem to respect privilaged information. It's hard to understand what she is quoting and what she said.
I highly doubt that Suzanne wants/. fanboys to phone her and harass her for no justified reason. I can understand the slashdot effect being annoying, but one could argue she did seek publicity and sueing wayback for archiving her site is at least newsworthy on slashdot, digg.com, and informationweek.com. I can not believe all this traffic is as she puts it on her site "INTENDED to shut this site down", but rather people read slashdot/digg/informationweek and were simply curious. Like others I wanted to see if she had a robots.txt file. But I don't think it's appropriate to contact her in matters unrelated to her business, nor do I feel that contacting her regarding her current lawsuit would be helpful.
Even if you dislike her actions against archive.org, I would say that any form of harassment only hurts archive.org .
I don't believe pirating music should be illegal or a civil offense, but I take the laws as they're given to me, and the disabled are not exempt from them.
This could be true, but being disabled and on so-so security should be taken into account. The fact that he suffers from "...paralysis of his entire left side and severely impaired speech" would sugest that he might not be physicaly able to commit the offence, nor have the ability to settle for the usual RIAA thousands. Defending him self would be difficult with "impaired speech". If laws are absolute, there can be no justice.
So, to be fair, the RIAA should only sue 1/2 of his body. It should go to trial and the gent would have to testify via typing very very slowly, and should he be found guilty, his income should be taken into account, and the RIAA should be awarded $1.00.
Even if you take the laws as they are given to you... you have to admit it's stupid to sue someone when it would cost more than you can possibly win.
Problem with that idea is that unless she used someone else's credit card to pay at the pump, she would have had to go inside to pay with cash, so she'd still end up on CCTV. That took all of 10 seconds of mental exertion to come up with, so if she's anywher near sane, she would have thought of that too.
At many AM/PMs and some Arcos i've seen, you can pay cash outside most of the time. I use this feature often enough. But such gas stations tend to have cameras at the pumps. TFA didn't speak of gas stations, and we are dealing with a military person which to be fair tend to be trained to be hard core practical people. This tend to mean spair tire, extra tanks of gas, that sort of thing.
This being said, I have done some road tips in my time. Seattle to San Jose, Seattle to LA, Seattle to San Diago. I can't say I never used a diaper, but I never had a job where I would were one. I can say I did cut down on time sticking the pump in the tank, paying inside, pump automaticly starts once payment is made, used the bathroom, and went along my way, or the same in states like Oregon where they have to have a trained professional pump your gas for you. But regular bathroom breaks aside from fuel stops are a good idea. Lack of them may cut down on your travel time, but you do so at the risk of being hypnotized by those lines on the road.
But these are the thoughts of sane rational people, not those who are caught up in a bizarre love triangle.
The problem isn't Windows. It's having an always-on connection to the internet.* This wasn't as big an issue in the dial-up days.
Ummm.... sure it was. I remember countless cases of machines shipped with win2k and xp which got infected circa 2001/2002 on dialup connections.... while attempting to install SP4 (2k) or sp2(xp). If you didn't already have the approperate service pack, one pretty much had to download it, copy to disc, re-install windows, install the service pack, then connect to the internet, and hope the service pack didn't get infected.
You're kidding about the astrology thing, right? You do realize that it's just as much bunk as the other stuff you've mentioned, right?? Why should it be taught in schools, exactly?
It's comicaly harmless bunk, which happens to be in every major newspaper. My complaint was not teaching astrology, but rather schools who didn't permit newspapers which carried horoscopes, or books on astrology.
As with many things, I didn't care at all until it became an "issue", and kids being kids, tended to push the envelope. The only time I carred was when astrometry books were lumped in with the astrology ban.
But my post was intended to be funny... i'm sorry if I offended any reincarnations of Julius Caesar, witches, ghosts, aliens from another planet, or even worse astrologers.
Yes, and according to similar polls, 34% believe in ghosts, 34% believe in UFOs, 29% believes in astrology, 25% believe in reincarnation and 24% believes in witches. With other words: a sizeable portion of the population will just believe whatever they come across without much, if any, criticism.
This is allowed... but fortunatly seperation of church and state keeps those pesky witches, ghosts, flying saucers, astrologers, and reincarnations of Julius Caesar out of our schools and goverment buildings. It may have been to keep the goverment out of their way, which I'm sure they appricate.
Astrology though was always a sore point with me in highschool. Study of Greek/Roman mythology was mandatory but astrology was banned. I guess they were afraid if they let in astrology, they'd have to let in the witches, ghosts, aliens from another planet, and reincarnations of Julius Caesar.

"I agree to this site's terms of use and purchace as published in the copyright notice on each page"
Hitting cancel simply says
"If you disagree with the terms, you must indicate your disagreement by leaving this site or closing your browser now". with only an ok checkbox.

Well, no clue if she had one before and deleted it, or never had one. You see she took her entire website down about 10 hours ago save one page. But that's not the point, the point was this person had a somewhat paranoid reaction all the traffic when there was a perfectly logical reason why someone might have accessed it. The site has since changed quoted from http://www.profane-justice.org/
If you take the time, she's updated her site.

For those looking to share your views, Suzanne has asked that we continue to contact her organization at her official "non-web" addresses. edits mine
I highly doubt that Suzanne wants
Just a thought, but where does a cavewoman get all that white foundation?
Ummm.... chalk? What else would the Neolithic Gothic Revolution use to compliment their slimy garbage bags?
They were clearly going for the cavewoman look, but they did end up going for the crazy street lady who wears nothing but a trash bag.
Also, Doctor Who on BBC-America looks like crap. I guess it is due to the PAL-NTSC conversion, but everything on that channel looks awful.
I get CBC... so I was unaware BBC-America carried the new doctor who. I'll have to check it out. My CBC feed is soso in terms of quality.
But one can, if they so desire, order the box set of the pal edition from amazon.co.uk, unless they don't ship to america.
