...and you read this article, it's your own fault. Don't you see that there is a subject called "Star Wars Prequels" on Slashdot? You should have disabled stories from that subject in your slashdot preferences.
If you did not do that, then you have only yourself to blame for seeing this spoiler on Slashdot.
" I see dell laptops for around $650. A little creative deal hunting and you can get the 15'', 2.0 Ghz p4 for $50 more."
And piss-poor build quality. Sure, the specs are high, but if you press on the back of the display, you can see the shape of your finger on the front. Good luck getting the sleep function to work. I doubt the dell has firewire. Try the keyboards on the dell and then the iBook. You will find that the Dell one is very cheap. You won't get a suite of software with the dell.
The numbers definitely favour the dell, but if you actually use each one for a period of time, the iBook would be overall the better choice.
The SARS business is way overrated. The travel advirosy is BS because the disease is all contained and all existing cases have known links to the original cluster. It's a good way to increase ratings on news anyhow. The number of cases went down today and the probabability of catching the disease in TO is in the same range of being struck by lightning.
Sometimes people lose perspective. You may say 'ooh this provider is on average 13 kbit faster than some other one on a 1.5 mbit connection'.
Just be thankful that you have broadband to begin with. I am from a rural farming area in Canada and the best that is available is 28.8 kbit via dialup. No ADSL. No cable (TV or internet.) (Un)Fortunately for me I am in Toronto on business and I have a 1.5 mbit rogers connection for a short time.
Stop complaining about how one broadband provider is 3% faster than another. Just be glad you have it to begin with.
(Oh, and I apologise to everyone I modded up. I had to say this.)
If I remember correctly, this is the same guy who congratulated Canada for preserving its 'National Igloo' on the immensely popular TV special called "Talking to Americans" .
" Not the "base state", but the one any true revolution would aim to achieve. (What kind of idiot would fight to impose anything other than a democracy on himself?!)"
A would-be dictator, obviously.

Anyone can say that about any music depending on their point of view and personal tastes.
Btw, YOUR FAVOURITE BAND SUCKS!!! (I said that just to make the point.)
Also, another point I'm trying to make is that fame and fortune and high 'top ten' ratings are not outside the domain of artists frmm.ca.
" (and that Sheila Copps should be pecked to death by pigeons)"
"I really like the comment on the radio part. My local radio station claims to be playing hit after hit. Which is true, to bad they play the same hit over and over again. If you don't like the music which has been defined as hits this week, well to bad, you're going to hate what their playing on the radio then. I would agree with what they claim in the article, the radios doesn't play enough different music."
I can't stand the way songs are introduced as "the hit song by &MANUFACTURED_POP_ARTIST!!" or "&BOY_BAND's hit single!!!" .
The only way those songs and bands accumulate a ton of fans spending a ton of money on it is that the marketers say it's a hit, so all gullible souls out there buy it because they have always mindlessly followed the crowd, therefore making it a hit. (This assumes that 'hit' is determined by number of sales.) It's just a slightly veiled way of controlling what's 'cool' and telling people what to buy.

"Canadian artists can sink or swim on their own. Alanis Morrissette, Burton Cummings and the Guess Who, Celine Dion, Shania Twain have all made it big in the US. Why? Because of Canadian government protectionism? No... because they're talented."
I don't even know what it is... I just use that auto-login link thingy. Whenenver I have to log in from somewhere else, my finger-memory kicks in and my hands type the passwd for me. But I don't actually know what it is.
" What about the CDR-tax? can't you consider that a compulsory license?"
That already exists in canada. See my sig for more details. Then again, I don't like paying CDN$65 per 100 CD-Rs when it could have been for less than $50.
" They mentioned that no spam was received from emails listed in the WHOIS database...
I'd be interested in seeing a study for companies that harvest snail mail addresses from the database."
For the addresses that I use for domain name registration, I actually get more snail mail spam than e-mail spam! The snail mail is generally about paying to have someone submit your domain name to search engines. I've never gotten one of those fake verisign domain registration scam forms.
I at another Ontario University in ENGG. We also refer to it as the iron ring although, as others have pointed out, Rudyard Kipling (author of 'The Jungle Book') was the author of 'The Calling Of The Engineer'.
I have a Netgear FM114P with 128 bit WEP set up and ssid broadcast disabled with MAC address filtering. Once I set the netgear config to use 'open system' authentication, everything was smooth. One of the good things about this router is it has very little slowdown when it does WEP compared to non-WEP versus most other wireless routers.
I found that if ssid broadcast turned on, selecting 'open system' was not necessary to connect the iBook to the network.
Agreed... The printer at home here is an HP Laserjet 5P which we've had since sometime in 1995. It has never broken down a single time, and jammed probably less than 10 times in these last eight years. The ink cartridges cost CAD$120, or $100 if you find a deal, and we've gone through maybe 4 or 5 of them in that time. This is for a family of five and includes several iterations of my mom's Master's thesis and my cousin's Bachelor's thesis.
Yes, old HP printers are practically invincible workhorses, and new HP printers are proof that HP has become an ink company.
We send our water samples periodically for proper lab testing and get reports outlining the levels of hundreds of dangerous items. And that's how I know that it's safe. Please read the original post again, I did not mention E.Coli, whose count has always been 0 ppm in every test over the last 35 years.
"I'll install a water fountain: I perfer to keep my teeth and not get fat."
One thing that is underrated is getting a dedicated water jug and putting it in the FRIDGE to keep it really cold. Over the last month or so I have gotten addicted to this. We have a RO Water Purification System at home (RO = reverse osmosis) because there's cauliform and iron in the well from which our home's water is drawn. (I live in a farming area, each house has its own water pump feeding it instead of a city grid.)
Really good quality, really COLD water is REALLY good. And I never guilty about pouring myself another glass. This is really worth a try!
The only downside is that you get spoiled. During weekdays, I live in Toronto at a place I am renting and the water tastes horrid to me. I have to bring bottles of it from home every week. And then there's the water in Quebec City... (shudder)
"Driving is also important. That is when your child will sleep. Unfortunately, you can't sleep and drive at the same time, so you and your wife will have to take shifts. This means that child number 2 is much more difficult to achieve."
This is a good point. However I would like to add an addendum: If you have to stop for something, i.e. to drop something off, get gas, get a coffee, etc. then the baby will wake up. So do your best to keep the baby awake (sing loud songs, etc.) until AFTER you get gas, and then let him/her fall asleep peacefully for the rest of the trip.

Add to that list: Avril Lavigne and Nickelback.

I was playing DVDs quite nicely under Mandrake about 30 seconds after downloading ogle.
The cockroaches thing has no basis in scientific fact. (I am living in Toronto, a SARS hotspot, so the news keeps us VERY up to date on such things.)

We use this stuff called 'iron-out' in the water softener to take care of that. The water where I live is friggin' hard as well.
thx ;-)
Uh, are you aware that Coca Cola is commonly shipped in *plastic* bottles? ;P
