  1. Case in point... on More Copy Protected CDs? · · Score: 1

    from the register :

"Aussie pop star (and former Neighbours actress) Natalie Imbruglia has won the race to produce the first copyright-protected CD on general release to the UK public.

White Lillies Island, which includes current anti-melody hit single That Day, features Cactus Data Shield protection. This is designed to prevent MP3-ripping by corrupting the table of contents so it won't play on a PC, NTK.net reports today.

Needless to say, it's been ripped and copies are already up on file-swap sites (in fact they were there before the album was officially launched)."

I have to say if i'd paided to have my album "copy protected" like this i would be calling a lawyer right now...

  2. Sadly paper only but... on How Did You Become a UNIX Administrator? · · Score: 1

I've just read a report in Computing (UK IT industry mag) that claims that one of our building societies (think bank) claims to be leading the way against IT ageism by taking on IT trainees in their 40's.

I realise it isn't administrator level stuff but it's a step in the right direction surely as once you are inside a company in an IT role, however minor, you in theory should only be limited by your skill and ability...

Oh yes, and I was rather close to first post too but I'd wager that has slipped through my fingers! Damn me for trying to verify my sources before posting.

  6. Lesson to be learnt... on Quirky Engineers Gone the Way of the Dinosaur? · · Score: 1

The embedded.com article seemed to have very little to do with quirky engineers.

It had more to do with companyies blind faith in the fact that pushing candidates through a series of questions that are largely irrelevant in real life will yield your ideal candidate.

In reality it takes more than the ability to answer questions to be a good employee, something that his manager seems to have overlooked!

You do have to wonder how he could have so easily overlooked the stench though...

God i hate having to feed the trolls but...

I believe my point was that you have to have experienced the alternatives to actually understand if your product is good or bad, simply saying product X is great because of feature Y is an empty gesture because you can't appreciate why it makes product X great.

If they understood their competitors better they might be able to find a meaningful reason why their feature is better, or equally they might find that feature Y is actually crappy and really shouldn't be promoted.

If you've ever read any webserver farm whitepapers you get the impression of exactly how difficult it is to get several machines in the same location running the same OS to syncronise their session level data.

Frankly I'd rate it as very unlikely that any company would ever share their session level data with any other outside companies due to security implications of what was actually contained in the session plus they need a way to stop unauthorised people getting access to that data which is in itself a minefield.

Most of all they wouldnt do it as it has the potential to show everyone else who has to deal with that data exactly how ineptly coded their server-side logic is - even a newer site there is going to be a lot of garbage in the session that really doesnt need to/shouldnt be there.

They could easily switch if there was a 100% compatible extension for apache (or your w3 server of choice) that allowed it to process the latest ASP specification without the need for any rewrites to the source.

Active X should still work assuming that *heaven forbid* you kept to the same win32 platform as in theory the scripting language should still work the same way but on a different "brand" of server.
