    No, local wall-clock time. Microsoft thought it would be confusing if the Windows time and the time in the BIOS were different. So, every Windows machine is set to local wall-clock time.

    I think you're misreading the output. /etc is from Feb 11 of this year, while /var is from May 11 of 2005. So /var is actually a few years older.

    Hey, I like it when big companies tell the government to fuck off. Eventually, the government will run out of money, and they'll be forced to cut back on bullshit like "The Department of Homeland Security", "The War On Drugs", and "Operation Liberate Iraq OMG commie terrists". Less income will force the government to downsize, and the effects on society as a whole will be wonderful.

    Not necessarily. If you buy a car for $20,000, and then sell it a year later for $18,000 but the blue book value is $16,000, then you've just made a $2000 capital gain which you have to pay taxes on. Yes, the tax system is fucked up.

    Nah, virus and trojan writers aren't that stupid. Deleting files will just make the user mad -- good trojans pretend to do nothing while they spam half of the free world.

    Just goes to show you, though, that the mac development (and user) community is mostly a bunch of idiots. Shareware is dead -- it's not 1993 anymore.

    Any source where something like this has happened? I'm sure in the real world you'll get off very easy for helping the cops catch the bank robber. You could also just leave; I doubt anyone's going to do a detailed investigation on the bank robber's (now in jail) tires.

    I use DynDNS. I haven't had any problems with their domain registration (or hosting) services. Their refund policy is pretty good; pro-rated, no questions asked.

    No, that's not right. In your analogy it's the same person taking things every day. In the case of youtube, 1000s of different people are the ones uploading unauthorized material. If one person continually uploads tons of pirated content, his account will be disabled, and that's the end of that. The problem the media companies face is that although that 1 person has been stopped, 10000 more people will step up to fill his shoes.

    Moral of this? When `crime' is completely unstoppable, the laws are probably wrong.

    Agreed, but 99% of the world is "complete morons". If you want them to give you money, then keep your "completely natural" behavior at home. You're at work to work.

    Looking at porn is obviously not work. (Neither is reading slashdot, but it looks innocuous and you can argue that you learn job-related things from reading it.)

    (If it's so important to you, go work in the porn industry. I can guarantee you that you won't be fired for looking at porn there.)

    I already have a single e-mail address. Can't the DHS just see all the sites I've registered for with that address? OpenID is no less private than anything else is now -- it will however make it easier to filter out known spammers, trolls, etc.

    Anyway, don't use OpenID, that's fine with me. 1996 called, they want you back.

    This is not at all what's happening. It's like after you've been burgled, you complain that you have to report the crime to the police and insurance company in order to get your stuff back. It's like expecting money to magically fall out of the sky for no reason -- not particularly realistic.

    Porn is probably more offensive than religion because someone from a distance can easily discern porn on your screen. It's mostly visual, after all. A religious website is just text, like your spreadsheets, emacs buffers, etc. It looks like work. People fucking on your screen is clearly not work.

    Also, people are conditioned to think that "sex is bad OMG something must be done", so that's playing against you too.

    I think it's generally understood that looking at porn at work is going to get you in trouble. If you don't understand why, it's probably good that you got fired.

    And I'm not really worried that one guy is going to topple the system. It's more a suggestion to the retired community as a whole - please don't go competing with the working folk for "real" work. Get out, enjoy yourself, channel your efferts [sic] into making the community better. Who knows, maybe if the baby boomers tried a little harder to work on their communities, there might not be quite the need for all the taxes we pay to keep those things going on the public dole. (Now I am waxing theoretical!)
