No, local wall-clock time. Microsoft thought it would be confusing if the Windows time and the time in the BIOS were different. So, every Windows machine is set to local wall-clock time.
> "Do no evil" does not mean "Do things Slashdotters like."
Hey, I like it when big companies tell the government to fuck off. Eventually, the government will run out of money, and they'll be forced to cut back on bullshit like "The Department of Homeland Security", "The War On Drugs", and "Operation Liberate Iraq OMG commie terrists". Less income will force the government to downsize, and the effects on society as a whole will be wonderful.
> I've always taken a loss, but I have no real way to prove it.
Not necessarily. If you buy a car for $20,000, and then sell it a year later for $18,000 but the blue book value is $16,000, then you've just made a $2000 capital gain which you have to pay taxes on. Yes, the tax system is fucked up.
* If a serial will make it a full version.......... shareware * If it takes installating more stuff.............. demo * If it is complete and I can spread freely... freeware * If I can have the program's source code... free software
Close. It's more like this:
* If a serial will make it a full version...... junk to avoid * If it takes installating more stuff.......... junk to avoid * If it is complete and I can spread freely.... junk to avoid * If I can have the program's source code...... junk to avoid * If I can have the source code and freely modify and redistribute it... free software
> And if the user happens to save an anti-piratically corrupt file *over* their original... well... I don't have much sympathy.
And this is exactly why I don't use software where I can't see the source code. I can't stake my data and reputation on whether or not some code monkey was having a bad day.
>He's basically sunk to the level of a virus or trojan writer.
Nah, virus and trojan writers aren't that stupid. Deleting files will just make the user mad -- good trojans pretend to do nothing while they spam half of the free world.
Just goes to show you, though, that the mac development (and user) community is mostly a bunch of idiots. Shareware is dead -- it's not 1993 anymore.
> For example, if you see a man run into a bank and the alarm bells start going off and you know he is robbing the bank, if you pull out your pocketknife and slash his tire to stop him from getting away, you will still be held liable for the damge to the tire.
Any source where something like this has happened? I'm sure in the real world you'll get off very easy for helping the cops catch the bank robber. You could also just leave; I doubt anyone's going to do a detailed investigation on the bank robber's (now in jail) tires.
I use DynDNS. I haven't had any problems with their domain registration (or hosting) services. Their refund policy is pretty good; pro-rated, no questions asked.
No, that's not right. In your analogy it's the same person taking things every day. In the case of youtube, 1000s of different people are the ones uploading unauthorized material. If one person continually uploads tons of pirated content, his account will be disabled, and that's the end of that. The problem the media companies face is that although that 1 person has been stopped, 10000 more people will step up to fill his shoes.
Moral of this? When `crime' is completely unstoppable, the laws are probably wrong.
> Only complete morons consider pornography to be offensive.
Agreed, but 99% of the world is "complete morons". If you want them to give you money, then keep your "completely natural" behavior at home. You're at work to work.
Looking at porn is obviously not work. (Neither is reading slashdot, but it looks innocuous and you can argue that you learn job-related things from reading it.)
(If it's so important to you, go work in the porn industry. I can guarantee you that you won't be fired for looking at porn there.)
I already have a single e-mail address. Can't the DHS just see all the sites I've registered for with that address? OpenID is no less private than anything else is now -- it will however make it easier to filter out known spammers, trolls, etc.
Anyway, don't use OpenID, that's fine with me. 1996 called, they want you back.
This is not at all what's happening. It's like after you've been burgled, you complain that you have to report the crime to the police and insurance company in order to get your stuff back. It's like expecting money to magically fall out of the sky for no reason -- not particularly realistic.
Porn is probably more offensive than religion because someone from a distance can easily discern porn on your screen. It's mostly visual, after all. A religious website is just text, like your spreadsheets, emacs buffers, etc. It looks like work. People fucking on your screen is clearly not work.
Also, people are conditioned to think that "sex is bad OMG something must be done", so that's playing against you too.
I think it's generally understood that looking at porn at work is going to get you in trouble. If you don't understand why, it's probably good that you got fired.
And I'm not really worried that one guy is going to topple the system. It's more a suggestion to the retired community as a whole - please don't go competing with the working folk for "real" work. Get out, enjoy yourself, channel your efferts [sic] into making the community better. Who knows, maybe if the baby boomers tried a little harder to work on their communities, there might not be quite the need for all the taxes we pay to keep those things going on the public dole. (Now I am waxing theoretical!)
> Local Redmond, WA time, that is.
No, local wall-clock time. Microsoft thought it would be confusing if the Windows time and the time in the BIOS were different. So, every Windows machine is set to local wall-clock time.
> Pissed about Katrina? Join CERT
CERT is already an acronym. Pick a different one.
> If a 100 millionth of all possible keys will work, then you will have to produce, on average, 100 million keys before you hit one that works.
Actually, it's 50 million on average.
I think you're misreading the output. /etc is from Feb 11 of this year, while /var is from May 11 of 2005. So /var is actually a few years older.

welcome to reality
in reality, you have punctuation marks and capital letters
sentences end with periods
sentences start with capital letters
welcome to the real world

My backup software deletes expired versions of files automatically. Am I going to be in jail soon?
Basically, this guy is probably doing nothing illegal. You should stop using his software, though, because it's obvious he's an idiot.

Cisco owns that one. It's what you use when talking on an iPhone.
> Watch out, SCO was just fodder, the real fight is yet to come.
Says someone named "Frosty Piss" with no references. Nice troll.
It is a good text editor, that's the thing. It just happens to be fun to program extensions, so there are a lot of them.
Glad that's settled then. M-x commit-post.

I use DynDNS. I haven't had any problems with their domain registration (or hosting) services. Their refund policy is pretty good; pro-rated, no questions asked.
But wait, if you run Firefox, OpenOffice, GIMP, and KIllustrator on OS X, it requires *5* entire windowing libraries.

Do you even know what OpenID is? You should probably research that a little before you whine about it everywhere.

It's "I", not "i". It's "Nazis" not "Nazi's".
This has been a public service announcement.
You sound rather paranoid. Which company is this, so I can be sure to not accidentally apply for a job there.
