Umm, anything connected to the 'net can be 0wned. One malformed IPX packet to a Cisco router and you can 0wn it. It's really that easy. I imagine there will be fuckups with VoIP phones, and they will be vulnerable. Where's djb-voip when we need it...
Lay off the crack? I think GPS timing is a good idea. It's a wireless time signal that's easy to receive... what again is bad about that?
(And just because you receive a GPS signal doesn't mean that you're being tracked. You would have to receive a few GPS signals, do some calculations, and then transmit that data to be tracked. If you just get one GPS signal, then all you have is the time.)
We use 802.11x to secure wireless here at UIC. The client we use on Windows is apparently so flaky that we have to have people bring their laptops to the CSO (client services office) and set it up ourselves. And yet plenty of people manage to use it. If it doesn't work, they're going to call someone and we'll help. So if you have to follow a procedure to get access, people will do it. Here's the procedure:
http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/network/wireless/o dy ssey.html
Interestingly 802.11x is built-in to OSX. At the recent ResNet help desk, we had a total of 2 mac users. one with popups in Safari (File->Block Popups) and one that typed his password wrong for Wireless. (And many many Windows users that had warezed versions that we couldn't upgrade to SP2 for them. People were literally crying. lol.)
They do this here at UIC. We have 10.x.x.x addresses BUT they each map to a unique address outside the ResNet world. So we can be addressed uniquely from the outside, but we think we're behind NAT. Dumb setup if you ask me.
UIC doesn't have money to give to the RIAA. Nor do I. That's my point. They can sue me all they want, the fact of the matter is that no money exists to take from me:)
This is also why ACLs are a good idea. If the OS says "no" when the program tries to delete something, that program is SOL. Why would any program need to wipe a homedir:)
My solution to assholes like this is to reverse engineer the program in an emulator, and post a crack that patches over the dumbness. I haven't done this yet, but I am taking a class on it this semester.
My textbook "Exploiting Software" suggests that if you are able to overwrite the interrupt vector, you should do something malicious when a breakpoint is hit, like erase the disk. That should keep people from fucking with the internals of your program for a while. I see about 30 ways to get around this, but m0r0n h4c13r software cracker might not.
Still kind of funny that a textbook suggests this:)
I'm not one who wants to muddle up English for the non-native speakers, so here's what I suggest you guys remember:
Affect is a verb, effect is a noun.
That's right often enough to be a useful rule. Obviously there are exceptions, but the non-native speakers won't be writing the next great novel (in English, anyway). Knowing this is enough to be considered Very Proficient in English, in my opinion.
If you're a native speaker then try working in the more advanced forms. There's always something to learn...
This looks like a good project for an EE student. I think I'll look into it. Are they really going to sue my University because I put a chip on a PCI board?
Font display is awful? It looks fine to me. What software are you using?
Cut and Paste doesn't work? It works here. Hell I can cut-n-paste out of gaim into the Firefox's rich text editor and all the formatting remains. Try that with XP AIM and IE. Doesn't work.
86 different text editors? Pick one you like. Why are choices bad!?
Application installation is awful? Yeah apt-get install app sucks. That's so hard to type. Even worse, it automatically installs the dependencies and configures the packages; all without a reboot. Linux really sux... [/sarcasm]
Big things not working? What?
Games? UT2004 works for me. Considering UT is the only FPS I ever got into, I'm happy. YMMV, but Steam/CS et al work with wine...
In other words, your troll is uneducated. I don't care if you use Linux or not though, keep your warez copy of XP and be a 1337 d00d. Makes no difference to me.
Yeah, people generally like Daley. For all the bad things he's done (Meigs), he's done a lot of good things like bike lanes and bikes ride free on CTA, Millennium park, trees, etc.
And interstingly, the most recent major security vulnerability (you can take over the computer with one IM) was in code contributed by Novell. Scary!!

Use the source, luke.

DAMN! I AM BRAINDEAD. That needs to be cat $i | perl ... > $i or perl < $i > $i . Oh well. You get the point. Delete the whitespace.
for i in *.c; do perl -e 'while(<>){ s/\W//g; print; }' > $i; done;
Alexa used to be Gator, right!? I don't think I'll be installing their toolbar.
ISO9660 consultants? ISO9660 is the standard for CD filesystems...
you forgot the /g...
But seriously.... engineers? Working on _salary_ in a cube is the same as a per-hour nurse? Please explain yourself...

Yeah, there are, probably. Same with the above number...
Thank goodness I still use write(6) :)
Yeah how hard was it to type:
$ dc
46341 46341 * p
before he posted?
2147488281 != 2147483647 !!!!

Click stop in iTunes. That's the Apple logo that takes over the mini-LCD screen :-)
Turn on your iPod. That apple is the Apple logo.
Apple does care about iTunes and iPod. The coolness of the iPod makes people want a Powerbook (or iMac or iBook or whatever).

Are they really going to get much from UIC
