It isn't bad enough that MacroSuck(tm) has to copy Apple at each and every turn, now LINUX Devs have to do it, too?
I mean, REALLY? Given that Unix has had the concept of file "versioning" since I don't know when (but a long-azz time!), and Linux has had what, like fifteen years to come up with something like this, I find the timing of this "revelation" highly suspicious.
This is a reverse-engineering of Apple's Time Machine, through and through.
I never thought I'd see the Penguin stoop to MacroSuck(tm)'s "R&D" tactics. Bleh!
Mod me "troll" if you must; but you KNOW I'm right...
I guess I need to learn to read too since I don't see the bit where you "acknowledged that file versioning isn't a new idea"......
I think a lot of people on Slashdot have said that over the years. Anyone who puts their head above the parapet and compliments a piece of MS technology is roundly shouted (and modded) down. I think the undeniable anti-MS sentiment of Slashdot is what the original poster was referring to.
Well, I've just done it and it's not exactly "paid". The amount is capped at £108/wk which is not a right lot. I earn very much more than that and of course can afford what amounts to 2 weeks unpaid leave. It's good for me since I get an extra 2 weeks leave at an important time. For a low paid worker it's useless since there is no way they could afford 2 weeks unpaid leave. Not to mention the fact that it would be frowned upon in the type of job that pays minimum wage.
Essentially then this is a benefit for the poor! Robin Hood would not have been amused!
But, even with this the UK is well behind all other western European countries I think. It's the Scandies and Findland which lead the way - as usual of course.
It just shows the difference in cultures between the USA and western Europe that paternity leave of a "couple of weeks off" can be viewed as a perk. Sadly as a Brit we are much closer to the USA than the rest of Europe (especially Scandinavia and Finland).
Ubuntu wins in the Office category because it comes with OO.org, but you'd have to add it to Vista after install. It's a tie in the multimedia category despite the Ubuntu codecs having to be added after install.
And there are more instances of such inconsistencies.
Do I detect the hint of bias?
[Of course this has to be modded down on Slashdot......]
Too many people here post criticism of things they know nothing about. I'm sorry, but Exchange does a bit more than POP3 mail and alpha quality calendars. It may not do it all that well, but it's solving a different problem from the one that Thunderbird solves (which it solves badly as it happens, in my view!)
OK, I take your point that OPD never went bust but my main point was that it's a shame that the main investors are from overseas. If Pelamis takes off then 3i and Hydro will get the benefits! Why can't we Brits look further ahead than tomorrow?
Although the company OPD (who are actually customers of my company) is based in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, the money is mostly from Norway! OPD went bust and Norsk Hydro (a major Norwegian state oil co) bailed them out with some 3i venture capital.
Rather a shame that we Brits can't seem to do these things ourselves. Apparently the DTI (dept. trade & industry) have stated that they are not prepared to lose out on wave power, after having lost to Denmark over onshore wind power. Seems that this desire not to lose is not backed by any resolve (=cash!)
Serves you right for using a multi-pass language!
I guess the point is that such posts concerning Linux never make it as stories here.
I think the accusation of bias against Windows and in favour of Linux is hard to deny. Not that it won't stop folk trying.
I imagine that's the end of my karma too....
How about:
1. Drive somewhere.
2. Kill somebody.
3. Goto 2.
I guess I need to learn to read too since I don't see the bit where you "acknowledged that file versioning isn't a new idea"......
What evidence do you have that this is reverse engineering?
Or do you mean that they are re-implementing Time Machine?

Er, I meant that this is a benefit for the rich!

How is it that criticism of MS=mod up, criticism of !MS=mod troll?

vi? emacs? why don't you just go back to punch cards, it was all so much easier and more productive then.....

Cut and paste in the config file, just the same. What you are saying is that you know Apache, but don't know IIS.
Office 97/2000/XP/2003/2007, for example. I take it you've never used MS software.

Does anyone here have the first clue what Exchange actually does?
No, I thought not.
On the contrary it's Scooby Doo and there are different versions on different sides of the Atlantic. Google tells as, as usual!
That would be "pesky kids" if you are quoting the baddie from Scooby Doo.
Or do you Americans have a different version because pesky is a peculiarly British word?
It's not that it's hard the way you do it, it's just slower.
IDE's don't allow you to write software using "mostly mouse clicks". If you think so then you haven't used a decent IDE.
If you can read The Silmarillion in its entirity then you are a better man than I am. It's turgid stuff, in my view.
This is what's known as bargaining. It's amazing what price reductions you can extract from MS with a spot of Sabre rattling like this!
Perhaps people find MS Office better to use than OpenOffice.org. Just a thought....

My top tip for offshore energy is SWAY: http://www.sway.no/
Shouldn't this be tagged with "haha" already?
