I won't give him (too much) props about inventing the sattelite. I'm sure about 500 ppl already have but anyway What I really dig about him is that in the book 3001 he took technology even farther. The one thing that seemed within reach was how capitalism lead to true world peace through the commercialism of spy information./Everthing/ was corporatly sponsored, especialy most things governments try to keep secret like spy satelites. I remember seeing a post about something very much like that here on/. already (no not the amsat thing, a little further back)
Of course he also wrote this before the MPAA/RIAA ever did more then hand out ratings on movies. "Me Ted"
You knew someone was gonna reply in defense of newbies, plus it's a slow day in my office:). Seriously though, I cant figure out if it's the question that newbies ask or the way they ask them that bothers you. When I ask my friends a lunix question I ask a direct, specific question and apply it. If more newbies did that I think we'd have a better rep.
I get the impression that Linux is the path to enlightenment but just remember... you were newbies too. Don't take yourselves so seriously! "Me Ted"
by O'Reilly. This is what it looks like . I know posts for this book are becoming like Natalie Portman/Beowulf Cluster FUD but damnit I learned a lot of good fundamentals in there. It'll teach you everything you need to know about getting started and basic use. It's easy to read and more importantly, easy to follow along in its examples. I've only been using Linux for about 6 months and this book really helped a lot.
Read it, live it, love it. Running Linux. "Me Ted"
Jeez, a leader in chip design falls behind the roadmap of their upstart competitor, their marketing dept gets ahead of their R&D dept, and then their competing products are released almost a generation behind their upstart competitors so they bank on a tech that never takes off. That sure sounds like a recipe for disaster to me!
No I am NOT talking about Intel, that would be offtopic!
Condemnations from shitty service aside, the way express.com screwed over LowTax over SA biased me against them. I work right next to chinatown so I don't need their service anyways. I'd link to it but since the redesign nothing is where it's supposed to be. "Me Ted"

I'm not an IBM fanboy or anything but... Get on with your bad self IBM!!
Assuming this isn't vaporware, this is the 3rd time in a month IBM is in the news with a new tech. My point behind this post is that IBM was downgraded (IMO) to underdog status because of stagnation in the mid 90's. Now look at em, they're pushing ahead into the future as hard as AMD/Intel by revolutionizing and inventing instead of incrementing technology. "Me Ted"
When I used to go to school in PA, specifically the LeHigh Valley Area, they transitioned to 10 digit dialing. I can tell you from exp that it is the most annoying thing a phone company could impose upon it's customers. Especially in the begining when I myself had to get used to it. You dont realize how convienient it is to just punch in 7 numbers and get the person you want to talk to. "Me Ted"
...the lack of respect that online media really gets. Maybe respect is a bad choice of words but it's Monday so I'll explain: While it is true that online publications are the minority, their contribution to the journalism "scene" seems to be minimized by traditional journalists who are afraid because anyone with just a AOL account (and 2 free megs of hosted space) can get as much attention as the NY Times. Decentralization of content publication is as worrysome to traditional print media as Napster is to the record labels. Anyone else see the parallels between RIAA v Napster and Mattel v That Guy Who Criticized Them On His Web Page? Anyway, The IOC doesn't see any online rags (not counting ABC, CNN, MSNBC and other traditional news franchises) as reputable, established news sources. I just hope in 10 years this conclusion comes back to bite them in the ass... we can all guess at how everything will change by then.
one of my friends got it for me for my birthday about 5 years ago, it's not even the wide screen edition one. It's such an awesome movie (from a Sci-Fi pov). Artistically it's unbelievable. The movie is almost 7 years old and Anime as a medium has come unbelievably far but it's still competes!
PS: The other must have for even a newbie's collection is Fist Of The North Star "Me Ted"
I got a B in economics in college so maybe my crack habit hasn't affected (too much).
The way I see it, if only 47 days out of 364 put to innovation...thats 11%. Thats assuming all programmers do is drink jolt and are handcuffed to their cubes... oh I was supposed to make something up for that analogy... forget it. 11% of anything sucks. Now keep in mind IANAP(programmer) and I know that it can never be 100%. The only point I'm trying to make is that I think as the IT market matures (20+ years) we'll see this ratio get higher because there will be less standing in progresses way, like the Execu-droid 2000 that listens to the consultants instead of you and asks to bring in your own copy of a visual C compiler.

I've owned my Tivo for almost 2 months now. The reason I chose it instead of a replay tv thingy is simply the hack-a-bility. Though I didn't hack my Tivo for more capacity it was/is very comforting to know that I could if I wanted to. I also came to realize that if my Tivo is made obselete, or if the service is dissolved, it will always function as a glorified VCR. I hope at the very least that ReplayTV ppl can say the same. "Me Ted"
Ars also has a great write-up on the (pin) ins and outs of memory. Only they started at the very beggining with SRAM and stuff. They did a really great of not only explaining the (physical) layout of memory but the theory behind every step and technical innvoations too. A lot of it was way over my head but I liked reading it anyways... RAM Guide: Part I

is that noise is a major consideration of space station design. I saw something like that on Discovery Channel once and they put a mic in on of the noisier modules in Mir and it sounded like a small NOC with too much equipment in it.
They said that the tolerable noise level in any module (according to NASA spec) was somewhere around 30 dB but a lot of the modules being made by other countries (notably Russia) exceeded those specs by as much a 40dB. Compund that with the fact that the sound has nowhere to go but in.
