  1. Matrox PC-VCR on Win2K - rant on Personal Video Recorders vs Ads · · Score: 2

The things you do to save a few hundred dollars on a Personal Video recorder...

I am trying to peice together something like the TIVO unit - I have a couple large HHD's, a motherboard that can do RAID, and a Matrox g400 Marvel. Not really a great gaming card, but it a fair job with MJPEG capture.

After waiting and waiting for drivers, I downloaded the final cut of the PC-VCR tools and drivers for Win2K - which holds the promise of getting over the 2M file limit I had in WinSE. What did they do? It is now a TV tuner with no recording. Way lame for a (at the time) $300 card that was bought just for that kind of thing. What did Matrox say? Hey, here is a coupon for $50 for one of our new shiny Marvel 450 cards that don't have hardware encoding, so no issues! Hmmn, only $170 more to get a version that does software encoding... I need a shower.

Yup, I was trying to use Win2K for this rather than Linux. Video4Linux might give me what I need for capturing, but I'm still learning the config and install stuff on Linux. (Got tomcat and apache to run, still struggling with Oracle... but getting close, I think). That, and my editing software is Window's based...

My wife just gave me that "your crazy" look when I vented to her last night - I know you guys care....

  2. "format c:" or format c:/s" to make it bootable? on Microsoft Tweaks Desktop Icon Licensing in XP · · Score: 2

It use to be that simple.... Today, you purchase WinME with a new Dell/Compaq/most larger folks it comes with a neutered version of DOS. You can not build (without some hacking an emergency disk) a bootable floopy -> bootable (almost) blank HDD.

These days, most OEM's give you a recovery CD rather than a complete build of the OS anyhow. A fair bit of hacking let you install Win98SE in the past, not sure if you can still do that with ME. I thought about ordering one of those $400 Gateway servers a few weeks back. Talked to the sales rep, and they would not sell me a copy of Win2K pro - only Server - since they did not have an image for that MB/BIOS combo. Grrr.

These "recovery" CD's make it real hard to get software you have licensed for a machine into a VMWare instance.

This won't (probably) generate any profit - at least short term - so this (world according to me) is a great way to get funding for pure research when the VC's have no intrest.

Anyhow, the point of an orbital bomber? You really can not call back an ICBM once it is launched. Cruise missles are pretty slow, when you get down to it, and can be intercepted... (a big maybe on the intercept, perhaps - too much harpoon for me)

The real point? You get monies for pure research - you force anyone who cares to pay money for pure research to counter the new weapon. You hope that one day the technologies might trickle down. Sounds like a win-win for those who try to make a living in the sciences...

I can not remember meeting more than 1 or 2 computer "science" majors who did not think that they were l337, indispensable, genius, and central to the survival of humankind. Yet, they take 4 years of Java and consider it a degree!

A few years back, I had a couple years of Java and 5/10 years of C/C++. Very few interviews even asked about the C/C++, but were wetting themselves over the Java. Going into the way back machine again, I did the honors MicroBiology/BioChemistry with way too much math. These skills were worth almost nothing.

The real irony here is this is marketing at its finest. The best solution is often beat by the one with better marketing (cf. Amiga). Play the rock star, there are many higher level drones will believe it - and pay for it. Perceived value is very important when you go to charge folks for your work. Go ahead - build a rock solid widget for $200 and try to sell it to the "Enterprise". Mark it up another $50K and watch it sell. Go figure.
