  1. GBA- Chopped liver? on Nintendo Announces new Zelda, Mario & Metroid · · Score: 1

And just so you know, Super Mario DX is a top seller on gbc, and the super mario advances also do very well compared to the rest. So, do kids think its lame?

Really? Thats good news to hear, altough I'm afraid that it may be a case of "No baby is ugly to a mother" syndrome. My understanding was that the developers were bought out for a million dollars; lock, stock and barrel. Now maybe I'm crazy, but just the physical capital alone is worth more than that (motion capture studio!). Honestly, I think that Nintendo wasn't happy with where Metroid was (or wasn't) going, and gave Mr. Spangelberg an ultimatum. On one hand, it can only be good for Metroid that Nintendo has decided to get more involved, but on the other, the fact that Nintendo bought them for such a small price probably means a delay to market to rework the game some.

But I truely hope your friend is right, and maybe he meant 2003 ;).

  3. Product dumping overseas on Console Pricing Economics · · Score: 1

My understanding from Macroeconomics is that product dumping laws are only applied to imported goods, ie foreign vendors dumping product in your country. During the steel problem, this was the Japanese Steel Mills selling steel for far less than most people believe they possibly could. In other cases, it involved Central American made underwear, if I recall. This is why Atari leveraged product dumping charges at Sony(in addition to Sony being a HUGE mark). You'll never get a government to prosecute a domestic company dumping goods to compete with a foreign vendor. It goes against the neo-mercantilism theology of governments.

Honestly it seems a game of cat and mouse between CNS(admins) and users, trying to find a protocol that isn't popular enough with the users to fill up the i1 pipes but works well enough to satisfy themselves. At least, thats the only way I can explain the lack of filtering on DCC sends.

On an aside note, p2p filesharing was one of the topics of research over i2 lines last year. So when they complain that they need the bandwidth for i2 research, keep that in mind. Personally, I think with the new additions, we have enough bandwidth to implement a p2p over i2 lines and satisfy the legitmate i2 uses.

Wallace and Gromit? Also, I can't seem to find this "Personhood" you mention. All people born in the United States are citizens. No race qualifier. No gender. No age. Any questions can be directed to Amendment 14 for further clarifications.

And as far as hurtful speech goes, the power of determining what is hurtful then becomes a great power. Is vocally opposing a military action ie Vietnam or the "War on Terrorism" harmful to America? On one hand you could argue that undermining public support could cripple American military operations should they somehow rely on public participation (ie Draft), but on the other you harm America simply by restricting speech itself. I believe the examples you have shown differ in the doctrine of "Prior Restraint." Can a court prevent a man from saying something? Can he be held accountable for what he said after the fact? From my readings, these appear to be seperable issues.

Finally, does killing a man as a public servant count as murder? I'm severely uninformed here; does a police officer undergo a criminal trial when he has to shoot someone in the line of duty? And if its not murder does that mean that Rouge Spear would be technically legal to minors? And if so does being given the choice to choose between terrorist and counterterrorist operatives corrupt our children?

My guess is that what results will be the banishment of the good with the bad. Doom gets taken off the shelf alongside Raven Shield at Wal-Mart. Similar to the "Chilling Effect" the EFF believes in with the DCMA. Walmart refuses to carry games considered image risky, makers find other means to make money.

My final comment is that I really hope our society isn't in such dire straits that the government has to step in to essentially force parents to get involved in the parenting process. Nobody trusts our G-men with guns, why should we trust them with our children?

The way I see it the warez food chain enters the public at the IRC level, and USENET to some extent. From there things flow to private ftps and college shares, although most of that flow ends up on cd rather than public sharing. Then finally things start to trickle down to the p2p domain in a week or two. Of course as you work your way down this chain, the number of infringements becomes bigger. But the best way to stop the flow would be to nail the groups, ones a little more prominent than say "Drink or Die." Get ahold of a few Razor 1911 guys and the flow will almost die off.

One caveat, this really doesn't hold as well for mp3's as the process has become well documented and nearly legitimized so much that many cd burner programs will handle it all for you.

Keeping in mind your medical tests, its fairly imparitive that these people get some sleep. The best known cures for this are lithium salts. The most flexible honor code is the one administered by an impartial human being. The fact is that a tribunal or Ethics Review Committee or whatever you wish to call it found that his work was indeed in violation of the code; the fact is that the court in charge has opted not to discuss things because of their considerable load (138 cases) and influence on other cases it might have. From their point of view its better that a student found guilty comprimise than drop out. Keep in mind that he was found guilty of copying 30 lines of Scheme in a class thats about as a pedestrian CS class as you can get. Write a function to convert Celcius to Fahrenheit, etc. A good comparison of this class to a class at a regular Uni would be Expository Writing or Comp or whatever basic writing class all students must take. Everyone must take this class, at GT. The class size is about 1200. That's a shitload of people, and far too many for an overtaxed professor to handle on a case by case basis.

So I think that their code is flexible, in that human judgement is applied before a decision is made.
