I think that many technology choices have to do with the Good enough is good enough. We go through these cycles with technology. Something looks complicated, so it gets reinvented as a stripped down thing which is good enough and then later adds on all the complicated crap the original system had. For the people who had a tough time learning the complicated thing, the progression of new to more complicated is a lot easier, and as you spend time in the depts you start asking the "Man, it'd be nice if it did this" questions.

So this explains why you have PHP coming out and basically promising that if they look a lot more like .NET and Java they'll finally be taken seriously. Not realizing that the simplicity had a benefit, and similarly the developers not realizing that sometimes you can outgrow a particular tool and it's time to move on.

The l33t factor. Yeah, good point. I think it is what is driving the interest in Ruby or Python. That's always going to be a factor, and this influences the groupies. The guys not really smart enough or experienced enough to understand why people might be recommending Ruby, but they read about it on /. and assume that's what they should be working with to be l33t.

This is not a free market! The record industry controls how music is allowed to be released. They restrict the market. If there was a choice between DRM and non-DRM music, everyone would go for the non-DRM stuff.

I think you're confusing Free Market with "I want the Backstreet Boys! WHAAAAA!" That is, you have convinced yourself that the only music worth listening to is the stuff the recording industry has advertised the hell out of. You want *Their* music. And you don't think this is a Free Market, because only *They* control distribution of their music.

But you ignore the thousands upon thousands of artists who don't have recording contracts, don't get played every hour on the radio, and would be more than happy if you listened to their music and even have it available for free off their websites.

Obviously the only reason you want to listen to the Backstreet Boys is because they were created by a recording company who spent millions advertising them. So you're a part of this little game, but you don't want to be.

The question you have to ask yourself, is why do you want to play the game? Why aren't you happy and content with the thousands of other options available out there?

I think the author of the article is right. An example of DRM which failed was DivX.

I refuse to buy music from iTunes because of the DRM issues, same with any of the other channels. I buy CD's. I like CDs. I can rip CDs. When I can't rip CDs, I will not buy CDs.

This whole thing is going to flop just like DivX.

I guess my point is, the big boys are going to fight this cause they sure don't want to pay more. The only way it'd hurt the little guys is if the big boys played along and gave the revenue to AT&T.

So google.com has a internet connections coming in from AT&T, and AT&T says "You have to pay us extra because you are google". What's google going to do? They're going to call around and find someone else to provide the service.

Unless all the ISPs get together and collude on rate structures, which would be illegal, competition is going to solve this problem.

Frankly, it's just about the dumbest idea that the communication companies could have ever come up with. Not only won't it work, but they're giving themselves a black eye by looking greedy.

Why I'd love to. Here's me blogging about it Sadly, the news site it was on took it down. It's good to know that even sometimes Republicans realize that their speech is a bit over the top. Like when Vox Day questioned Bush's assertion that we can't deport 11 million immigrants, considering after all the Nazi's got rid of six million Jews in only 4 years. They edited the op-ed over at WorldNetDaily, but plenty of people commented on their enthusiasm for the cause.

Oh, but hey, look at this... I found another person commenting on your friend saying how great it was for Africans to become Americans through slavery.

As I recall, it was the first Republican President Lincoln that used his executive powers to end slavery. And it was Republicans who were 79% in favor of the Civil Rights act of 1964, and Democrats who opposed it by 63%. Oh, and lets not forget than when Democrats tried to filibuster the bill, it was the 81% of Republicans that could have unilaterally ended the filibuster.

Obviously this proves that Democrats are all racists! HA! LOL! Where do you get this shit? Is there some sort of secret "How to be a moonbat" manual? If so, I'd love to read it.

Hey, you know. Back in 1964 it was a Republican who authored the Civil Rights Act, true. But it only passed with the aid of Democrats like Hubert H. Humphrey, Mike Mansfield, Lyndon B. Johnson and not to mention John F. Kennedy. Obviously, according to you this proves the Democrats were all racists.

But which party did Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond and the other filibusterers switch to later on? And which Republican Presidential candidate campaigned against the Civil Rights Act of 1964?

Admittedly Goldwater did later in his life regret his involvement with that. But it's obvious from looking at the map which party opposed Civil Rights that year. The Republican party is no longer the party of Lincoln. It hasn't been since 1964. Abraham Lincoln today would be called a traitor to his country by the members of the modern GOP. :-(

You know for a fact why? Because Google issued a press release, or because the proprietor told you? Because we all know presumanbly political websites have no interest in exposure or fund raising.
