  1. No it's not. on Laptops Outsell Desktops in Retail Stores · · Score: 5, Informative

I can see how it's sort of ambiguous in the original article, if however you go to the NPD web site you can read their original press release where it's actually clear that they are refering to # of units sold for LCD's. It also turns out though that they are indeed refering to percentage of money for Desktop/Laptop sales.

  2. Re:Outsold in dollars not units. on Laptops Outsell Desktops in Retail Stores · · Score: 2, Informative

Ummm. . . Actually if you were paying attention to the article you'll see that at least with the LCD's they seem to be refering to % of total sales not the value of said sales. (i.e. In May 2002, LCDs were only 22 percent of total monitor sales, said NPD. This past May, that more than doubled to 52 percent.) Admitidly though the article was a bit more ambiguous with the PC/Laptop sales and I can see how that one could be read either way.

  3. Re:Huh? on Ogg Support For iTunes · · Score: 3, Informative

Ummm. . . I have to wonder how much you've been paying attention to the ogg project.

It's been stated several times by Monty that decoding an .ogg file has about the same complexity as decoding an .mp3

Perhaps you're basing this idea off the fact that for a long time the only decoder available needed a floating point unit. But this has since been fixed by the release of Tremor (an integer only ogg decoder).

But in any case your information is wrong, or at the very least out of date.

  4. Actually, you are wrong. (According to theKompany) on Toshiba's iPod Competitor · · Score: 1

    From their page:

MP3 files are great, and that is why we support them, but Ogg doesn't have any nasty license restrictions, compresses 10% smaller on average with 50% better quality, and our tests show it consumes less CPU on the Zaurus by a third, so this should also extend the battery life.

    (Emphasis mine.)

  5. Dianne Feinstein aiding piracy?? on SSSCA Introduced in Senate · · Score: 1

"At a hearing last week, Feinstein showed her colleagues a pirated movie that she said an aide had downloaded from a file-trading service." (quoted from the Wired article)

Ummm. . . Is it just me, or doesn't this ammount to admiting that one of her own aids participated in an act of copyright violation? Shouldn't this aid be at the very least fined and/or imprisioned for violating copyright law? After all, violating copyright law is already illegal, even if you are a senator or a senator's aid. Wonder if she thought of that? :)

Then again, if the aid was asked to obtain it, that would dirctly involve the Senator herself. She does admit that it's a pirated movie. Even if she didn't ask the aid to obtain it, she certainly did take this pirated copy and use it for her own purposes.

Perhaps if our own law makers respected copyright law, they wouldn't see a need to outlaw equipment that could possibly be used to violate copyright law. ;)

    Just a thought. . .

You know, the Sony-Ericsson T68 is also a pretty neet little color thing. It also has the advantage of being a 3-band GSM phone. Color display, BlueTooth and all sorts of other neet stuff. Almost got one on my last trip to Europe (ended up getting a T39m though due to $ reasons. As cool as it was I couldn't quite convince myself to pay the extra $ for a color display).

What I find interesting here is that not only is this just one big blatant Copyright violation. It is also an example of one of the main arguments for such laws as the DMCA, to prevent people from just blatantly making exact digital copies of things. (Although, I'd doubt that this is any more than a violation of copyright law since there were no protections against copying.) As an AC then, it appears that you are contributing to the argument towards such horrendus laws like the DMCA. Of course I also find it ammusing that this post ended up with a +5 rating. ;-)
