X-box IRCC uses an Nvidia chipset. if NVidia sticks to it's tradition of not releasing the specs of the chips, only binary drivers, a port of linux to the X-Box is not a likelly thing to happen.
The same way Alan Cox does. Working at a linux packager. Alan works for RedHat, Marcelo for Conectiva, Latin America's largest linux distributor. You can say that he actually hacks the kernel for a living.
Let's see, first it was ftp server hiden in machines at work or college, they conviced companies and colleges to shut them down. then came napster, they sued and won. napster is no more.
Now the target is Music City. The may eventually win this too, and they can even win some kind of legal stuff to force ISP to filter Gnutella trafic...
But there's more thing in the oven. Cult Of Dead Cow, the same group tha gave us BackOrifice, is developing what they call "project X" that will be ablle to do peer-to-peer file sharing despite censorwares installed in the midle...
And if RIAA wins over "project X" too ??? smart hackers (in the good sense) will come with aven another tool to share files.
RIAA is just trying to atract free publicity to the copyright issue, because technically speaking, it's a lost war for them, and I think they know this.

there's Koffice and I'm pretty sure gnome guys won't stop on Gnumeric...
And the good side is that the two or three suites can share code, leaving to the user to choose based on look and feel and size (more bloat, less bloat...) and as they mature and gain in quality it'll become harder and harder to sell a closed source office suite for Linux and other open source OSes...
But we must admire these guys efforts. Congratulations Gobe, I hope you sell lots of copies to Win users.
Well, I just upgraded my iPaq to the unstable version of qpe, a GUI built over qt embeded for iPaqs with a basic Familiar Linux, and believe it or not it has QUAKE.
man, this quake thing is quickly becoming omnipresent, some more time and we'll have more ports of quake than space invader or pac man...
Now in a second tought i recognize that SOMO of the problems were of aplications built over QT embeded, like the calendar and the power saving control pannel, but one I'm almost sure it's a QT problem. Full screen apps.
This is one of the situation where a hard reset is needed. after a full screen app finishes is impossible to return to the program manager. Happens with media player, happens with VNC, happens with image viewer.
most of aplication bug I mentioned earlier were solved in the unstable qpe distro. take a look at qpe.sourceforge.net

I know this too. My post is not about faster buses running at slower speeds. is about why a PCI-32 only bus is limited to 33 MHz. If you check the jumpers of some old 486 MoBos you'll see that PCI-32 can also work at 25 or 16 MHz.
My post was also about why you should not overclock certain buses. I still remember some old Cyryx chips with 75 MHz FSB that forced MoBos designed to work at 66 MHz to overclock EVERYTHING, including PCI. It was a bitch, and the pos was also informative, to remember less tech savvy readers of the limits of certain technologies.
33 MHz... that's it. you can't make make PCI-32 go any faster than this, or you'll end up with a frozen system, malfuctioning cards, and other kinds of bizarre things. remember old PC-XT 12 MHz ??? well, I do. corrupted files was the least of our problems when we had to deal with overclocked ISA buses.
If you want a faster PCI bus you'll have to search for a PCI-64 mother-board. these boards have PCI slots with 64 bit data-path running at 66 MHz, but they require special cards to take advantage of the extra speed/bits. If you attach a normal PCI card to a PCI-64 slot it'll work with 32 bit data-path at 33 MHz.
Also, forget about the memory clock. There's a north bridge controler between the memory and the CPU. Take an overclockable Athlon mother board like Soyo Dragon as an example. You can boost the CPU front-side-bus way beyond 133 MHz, but the memory clock will remain at 133 MHz.

This means a REAL setup, with a command prompt. just like a REAL server should have (Think on SUN, PA-RISC, etc) not that crapy menus x86 machines have.
Way to go Samsung. Add 2 or 3 more PCI slots and it'll be even better.
Oh, and did you noticed te AMD 761 North Bridge ? nothing strange here. Athlon shares the same bus with Alpha. AMD licensed it a long time ago, so using an AMD chipset makes perfect sense.

What to do if the chip manufacturers refuses to release the data sheets for the components ?
the only way to put a linux distro without these info is by reverse-engineering the console's bios/OS, which may be ilegal in some countries, so we still need some support from nintendo/IBM/ATI...

The CPU is that smaller IBM chip, everithing else is done by the ATI chip.
Well, we know the CPU is a PowerPC derivative, and we know linux kernel have some support for ATI video cards.
I just want to know what kind of proprietary stuff or changes ATI and IBM introduced to make things harder for linux hackers...
Sony already have an official version of our beloved system for PS2, there's a version of linux for the Dreamcast too...
I hope someone (Nintendo, maybe???) puts togheter a distro for the GameCube too. It's a shame wasting all this hardware just for games.
BTW, the guy who gutted his Cube just lost the warranty...
hmmmmmmm... probably yes. I'm not as familiar with it as I am with LILO (never hacked it's config files and never used it to dual boot with win... linux only machine:-) ), but I spose if you use it, you'll end up with two subsequent graphic menus to chose OS.
If you use XOSL, I think LILO would a smarter choice to load linux kernel. Imagine a situation with 1 copy of windows and 2 linux distros in the same drive. you can use only one XOSL menu to chose OS.
If you choose win, it'll boot the FAT partition and you'll be in billOS, but if you choose one of the linux distros, it'll load the LILO copy of that specific partition and load that distro.
Why is better to have two LILOs in this sistuation ? easy. no typing to select the distro once "LILO boot:" shows up.
If you're installing Linux, install LILO in the Linux partition's boot sector (superblock). You can safely ignore the warning that says you won't be able to boot Linux. XOSL can do the job."
this mean the hassle of running lilo everytime you recompile the kernel still exists with XOSL.
I rather use grub. don't need to rerun it every new kernel and it allows me to edit entries in the menu during boot...

Well, if you think this is fast wait for 2.5.x to start. it's not unusual for a development kernel to go above x.x.100.
Ohhh, and 2.0.x was in 36 revisions when i shifted to 2.2.0
I still don't know why 2.2.x had so few releases. only 17 before 2.4.0... weird...

as expansion slots were used by a few companies that sold G3 expansion cards for older PowerMacs.
IIRC, they had an expansion card that you'd attach to the cache slot near the original PowerPC CPU.
This way the new CPU would have all the memory bandwith it needed to run at 400 Mhz. 400 Mhz in a performa 6200... wow!

Because M$ does NOT want you to use other OSes.
And there's windows and windows. NT (4,2000, etc.) does allow you to boot and alternative system, as long as it's in a fat or ntfs partition.
All other OSes (os/2, BeOS, Linux, etc.) are not that greedy.
