That's an interesting read, but I think it misses the point of the film. Moore's stated purpose was simply to find out why Americans kill each other so frequently. Along the way he attacks some right wingers, sure, but it's not the goal of the film to cast the NRA in a bad light. During the section on Canada, Moore even says that the problem isn't the quantity or availability of guns in America. I'd also like to point out that Moore is a card-carrying member of the NRA.
Moore's conclusion in Bowling is that America has a culture of fear. I didn't get the impression that he blamed Charlton Heston or Lockheed-Martin for this. We can spend all day splitting hairs about whether Bowling is a documentary by Academy standards, but again, I think that's missing the point.
Don't go messing with those symlinks unless you know what you're doing. Apple provides a tool called gcc_select for this purpose. If you run "gcc_select -n 2" it will show you what commands it runs to select GCC 2, and there are 60 of them. Not something you want to do by hand.
There's no man page for gcc_select (not on my Mac anyway) but "gcc_select -h" will get you some brief help.
I use a Palm Vx with a Magellan GPS Companion and an application that I wrote to navigate light planes. It doesn't interface directly to the aircraft, but it has a full database of airports, navaids, and airway intersections. It's a dream to use during VFR and it's a great situational awareness aid during IFR.
If there's any interest I'll make it available (with source code of course).
Hang on yourself. I've used Macs from day one (1983), as well as NeXTSTEP (although I only started with version 2 or thereabouts, but I've still got my black hardware at home). I assure you the "beachball" in OS X was taken from NeXT. It resembled NeXT even more closely in OS X preview releases, before Apple made it puffy.
This seems a little circular. We have immune systems to protect ourselves against viruses and other foreign bodies. When we get infected, our immune systems get stronger and learn to fight off that particular infection. So we need viruses to protect ourselves against viruses. Eh?
Or from another perspective, if there were no viruses, our immune systems would grow weak through disuse. We wouldn't be able to fend off viruses. But since there aren't any viruses to begin with... you get the idea.
Agreed. As a manager, I find the attitudes of a lot of Slashdotters to be off-putting. Look, for example, at the synopsis at the top of this page, which equates my profession with a well-known Dilbert character. The message is that I am too stupid to understand the virtues of open source software. This is not an effective technique to win admiration from the people who write your performance evaluations.

There is a band of frequencies that follow the curvature of the Earth. This is how LORAN works (marine navigation system with terrestrial transmitters).
You're probably right (about the towers/FUD). I'm not sure how people came to believe that the FAA has banned cell phones on aircraft. Maybe because they only hear about it from flight attendants, mixed in with the safety briefing about seat belts and emergency exits.

You say this jokingly, but one of my staffmembers actually enjoys doing his taxes. He enjoys it so much that he does it several times each year.
I'm dead serious.
Make that 1984. ;-)

Thanks for posting the original joke. All the repeats seem kind of stupid now, lacking the extra level added by the double-meaning of "party".
This is the reason I read Slashdot with a +6 bonus to Flamebait.
There's something about a number with 15 digits of precision that doesn't seem very "approximate" to me!
Whoops, make that almost two per day. Preliminary 2002 civil aviation accident statistics
Airline travelers, yes. All air travelers, no. There's about one fatal aviation accident per day.
I remember reading that WriteNow was written in 680x0 assembly. Free license or not, I doubt anyone sane would want to maintain it now!
The truly amazing thing about Real Life is that the development process only took six days, although that all depends on who you ask.
There's a difference between "want" and "biological imperative".
Typed on my PowerBook, BTW ;-)
Thanks for that, you fucking weirdo.

My best employees are over fifty. My worst are in their twenties. 'Nuff said.

You are wrong. ;-) Read 47 CFR 22.925.
Hey, not so fast, I'm a boss and I read Slashdot! (That might make a good bumper sticker...)
I'm just poking fun. No harm meant. ;-)
Except for you, evidently.
