I was mostly making reference to companies that deal with insurance processing - many of which are publicly traded. Companies that do web hosting, call-centers, data processing will often find themselves having to contend with multiple sets of laws whose intent is to protect data, that when trying to comply with one set, makes the company non-compliant with the other set.

Being a specialist can have it's benefits - mostly to the person who is the specialist.

However, being a specialist also has drawbacks.

    Let's see....

#1 That's not my specialty, I don't know anything about it. This is used for 99.9% of any discussion that is outside the scope of their specialty.
#2 How could I know that my application would do that? I don't know (xyz operating system), I only know (xyz language).
#3 What do you mean I can't use all the resources on the box, I'm the only one using it right? (as you try to explain to the specialist that they are logged into a UNIX box with 40 other programmers)
#4 Why can't I load up xyz app server and abc web server, that's what I'm used to using? (as you try to explain corporate standards)

The list could go on and on...

This is where generalists, or at least broader experience bases work the best. Specialists have their places, usually in an isolated system / network where they can do no damage.

The Mafi-AAs want to get to a point where we pay for each time we hear / watch / talk / think about their products.

If they had their way, if we were outside, and a car drove past, and we could hear their music, we'd be charged a listening fee. The owner of the car would be charged a performance fee. They'd like radios to be tied to the internet so we could be charged a listening fee every time a song was played, and we tuned in.

I'm really shocked that they haven't tried to sue car stereo manufacturers for enabling illegal public performances of their products.

Why would I want to overpay a cable provider for my service?

As to the TiVo interface, I was never fond of it to begin with. Rather klunky in my opinion.

It makes a difference in that it won't work with anyone's satellite service, unless you're connecting after the fact.

The other neat thing about the 622, is that if I'm watching a show, and decide that someone else might like to see it, I can hit record, and it can record the entire show, even if I'm 90% of the way through it. It automatically records whatever channel each tuner is on, just in case you might want to do this. The only place this doesn't work, is on an HD channel, where you are limited to the previous 15 minutes of the show.

The 622 is a very nice piece of equipment - I've only had 1 show that didn't record and that was due to a cable repair guy who didn't like that I had dish, cutting my satellite coaxial cable. Since I had security cameras placed around my house, I was recording his actions. I walked outside and told him he could put a new piece of coax in, and that I'd already called the cable company to report his actions. It was kind of funny to see the video of him cutting the cable on the local news channel, and yes, the guy lost his job.
