  1. Samsung i300 on Handspring Hides Flash ROM in Handspring Treo · · Score: 5, Informative

Users of the Samsung i300 for the longest time were told that there was no flash rom, and that the operating sytem was not upgradable.

Then FlashPro came out and proved that there was flash in the i300.

Upgrading the OS is still not an option, considering that there are lots of propreitary extensions to the OS.

However, the flash capabilities of the devices were hidden for quite a while.

You're right, I concede. It is a pretty harsh thing to call "plagurism", and perhaps my earlier post is in haste, and I applogize.

However, know this, that if I had received both Mr. Katz article, and the NY Times article as a TA in college, I would have failed them both and sent the matter to the professor.

Maybe it was the NYT article that plagurized Mr. Katz, though I don't think the timing of the articles makes that a likely possibility.

I shall withdraw my earlier "plagurism" comment, and applogize...

I still feel Mr. Katz' work is "arrogant sophistry" at best, and "banal arrogant sophistry" at worst.

I have to admit that I normally don't read Katz's stuff. It always came across as a sort of arrogant sophistry. In this case, I had just read the NY Times article, and I have to admit, the elements are strikingly similar. Similar enough that I feel that the moniker "plagiarism" is warranted.

The 'elephantine' comment is one such example. However, the NY Times article also likens Lucas' storytelling to an 'undergraduate history course.'

Mr. Katz, if you must satisfy your sadistic tendencies by assailing the Slashdot community with your banter, at least make be original.

  5. Reverse Engineering. on Handspring Treo Now Available · · Score: 1

The Samsung i300 is another PalmPhone thats been out for a while. Samsung has opted to not release an SDK as of yet.

Hence, I disassembled most of the phone's code and reversed engineered a dialer and figured out how to remove the soft grafitti area.

More information is in the http://www.sphi300.com developer's board if you're interested.

Whats cool is that my reverse-engineered dialer is in use by some commercial vendors. I received word from Iambic that they found the dialer code helpful in supporting the dialing in Action Names.

I'd love to reverse engieer the Treo, but I don't see myself buying one anytime soon. I like the i300 form factor better and its already color (though the screen isn't as good as some other color palm devices).

Anyone want to send me a freebie? Didn't think so.

Carnegie Mellon has been doing this for years. Not only does it compare your source against other students' sources, but the CS department has solutions for every student in the past 10 years.

From what I understand the method used involved comparing source and generated assembly code for similarities.

And while I'm on my soapbox, this is another article posting a supposed "new and newsworthy" technology to slashot thats really not so new. Check your facts, and find out if this is really a "first" why don't you?

My Newton MessagePad 2000 (upgraded to 2100) has been talking for years. Apple wrote a Macintalk extension years ago, which was never released. It was leaked however, and is now widely available.

Furthermore, just recently, an old Dragon Dictate demo for the Newton has been found and released. While the Newton's vocabulary is limited, this is true voice reognition nonetheless.

I dislike Apple Computer in general, and the fact that they discontinued the Newton didn't help my opinion. Nonetheless, I still feel the Newton MP2.1k is the greatest PDA available, even today. Unfortunate that Apple no longer makes the best product they've ever produced.

Actually, I haven't set up the logging function of the BEFW11S4, but it does have a logging function.

The logging function logs all TCP/UDP traffic, the port, and the IP it was from, and to.

The DHCP function can pair MAC's to the IP's assigned, so with these two tools, I could trace things back.

So the Linksys BEFW11S4 has the functions necessary to trace things back. The only thing I wish it had was a "MAC address allow list", which is more useful than a "MAC address disallow list" thats in there now.

  9. Free 802.11 Networks on 802.11b Network Scanning In London And Amsterdam · · Score: 5, Interesting

I just recently set up a Linksys BEFW11S4 router with wireless access in my apartment.

Shortly after I set it up, I found a guy using my network via the wireless access point. At first, I was fine with it, but I realized quickly that this wasn't some guy passing on a bike, but rather someone in the same apartment building.

I tracked him down, and told him that I wasn't in the business of providing free internet to the entire building. Now he pays half the DSL cost. Not a bad deal.

The point is this: I still leave my network open. Anyone wandering by is free to use my 802.11 network. In fact, the settings are such that anyone with a computer set up to connect to the local university's wiress network will get a connection here.

The lesson learned: keep your network open. Smile when some wandering soul conencts for a while. Unless you've got your own T3, though, you better make sure someone isn't getting free, continued, high speed internet, at your expense.

I also have a BEFW114S. I wasn't sure at first but I've decided that I really like it.

I had some problem with the wireless, but I found another 802.11 network in the area that was on the same channel, which was causing some problems.

Also, I have had to reset it a few times, most were during my wireless problems. The other day, the PPPoE to Verizon got flakey, and I had to reset it to get it to reconnect. I blame Verizon for this.

    I really like the BEFW11S4

    1. For the money, you get quite a bit of bang for your buck. $200 provides you with a 4 port 10/100 switch, wireless, a DHCP/NAT setup for 35 hosts, port forwarding, filtering, DMZ, and logging.

    2. It looks pretty cool. More importantly, has good indicator lights.

    3. Nice HTTP configuration tool, though I've noticed that the Proxomitron Ad-proxy does break it, even in bypass mode.

    4. Flash upgradable to new firmware.

    Some things I don't like.

    1. the DHCP server doesn't support assigning static IP addresses to given MAC addresses. You can manually assign static addresses outside the DHCP server's IP range.

    2. you can set the MAC addresses that are disallowed, but I'd like to be able to set the list of ALLOWED MAC's, to prevent unauthrized wireless access.

The logging feature is nice. Actually, I found someone using my wireless, sniffed his packets, got his MAC address, had my university network people track it down, emailed him, and now he's paying half my DSL costs. :)
