It's worth noting, though, that Linus didn't chose to name the kernel after himself. He wanted to call it Freax, but his friend who ran the FTP server named the directory holding the files 'Linux', a name that proved to be understandably more popular.

    Why is this even news?

This is news because these scientists explicitly asked not to work on sensitive material in order to avoid a background check. All of a sudden, the rules have changed, and the security checks are necessary, regardless of what they're actually working on.

You would have been left with more money if you
hadn't given charity & got the tax breaks.

The only diff to this scenario is when giving the
donation puts you in a lower tax bracket.

Tax rates are marginal anyway, so it wouldn't save you any additional money if you did switch brackets. Assuming that there's a tax bracket at $90, with everything below it taxed at 15%, and everything above it taxed at 30% as above. Repeating the same two scenarios that you used:

    (1) $100 income, no charitable contribution. $90 @ 15% + $10 @ 30% = $13.50 + $3.00 = $16.50 of taxes. After-tax income: $83.50

    (2) $100 income, $20 charitable contribution. $80 @ 15% = $12.00 of taxes. After-tax income: $68

So not only does money not magically appear from crossing marginal tax rate boundries, but your tax refund on the donation isn't even as large ($6 in the parent's example, but only $4.50 here), so while the $20 contribution only took $14 out of the parent's pocket at the end of the day, here the same contribution would cost us $15.50

Another similar situation, my economics prof told the class of an ATM which would spit out the cash before ejecting your card, and if the card couldn't be ejected (perhaps because you had your thumb over the slot), the machine would assume that there had been a problem and would reverse the transaction.

I've noticed that the ATMs I use most frequently eject the card before handing out the cash.

The actual legalease of the Attribution CC license actually specifies the mimimum requirements for attribution.
To summarize, you have to name the author and title (if any), and if applicable, the URI and the license. If it's a derivative work, reference what it's a derivative of. Attribution should be with any other credits, and should be as prominant. The attribution should also be represented in a manner appropriate to the medium. In other words, the HTML source would not be a reasonable place to stick the attribution for an image. It would, however, probably be appropriate for some CC javascript code.

The legalease for Attribution-No Commercial-Share Alike can be found at here, with the attribution clause being 4.d. I would assume that the other Attribution licenses would be similar. I am not, of course, a lawyer.

I guess Penny Arcade could even provide exclusive comic strips since they tend to have an aversion to continuity, but a story-based web comic really shouldn't offer story-related strips on a subscriber-only basis if they offer free strips as well. Either make it all subscriber-only, or don't do any of the story exclusively to subscribers.

Keenspot has a subscription system that means that you don't have to look at their ads, get to use their the 'weekly' view when reading the archives and get to view all the Keenspot comics that one follows on a single page.

Subscribers also gain access to exclusive content. I think that Jeff Darlington of General Protection Fault has an exclusive story arc available only to subscribers, and I suspect that a few others do as well. (I don't have a Keenspot PREMIUM subscription so I can't check easily)

Most cartoonists take the route of publishing extra stories in comic book form, which brings us back to merchandising. The idea is similar, though, as the main online comic can't rely on the pulp-and-ink comic.
