I think he speaks of the cult of Mac. It's a religion, Steve Jobs is God and Steve Wozniak used to be their prophet. They no longer need a prophet because he is busy dancing with the stars. No matter though, since God speaks to them from the great stage and tells them what iSoftware to love, how their iComputer should look, and which iPants they should wear today.

Your "Star Wars" analogy can only hold true if the TM "Star Wars" is no longer used. I don't think we've gained any ground.

If I derive my work from someone elses but continue to use the same name they gave to it then I would think that at least some of it's copyright would remain with the founder. I am fairly sure that incremental change would be obvious and to say it isn't a derivative would be seen as a pile of crap. If on the other hand I look at someone elses GPL code and then write something completely new that is named something different and GPL it then it would belong to me.

On the AT&T and UC issue I would like to point the name change.

  9. I am mostly unimpressed with direcway on Experiences with DirecWay Satellite Internet · · Score: 1

I helped set it up for a friend who had an AOL dialup connection. All I hear now is how the upload speeds are horrible. When they try to send an email with images in it, it takes forever. Whenever they try to use UPS for online shipping it is dramatically slower. Also they have said that sometimes their download speeds get extremely slow as well. All of this is with all of the hacks to speed up the connection installed. I would say that when I tested it the download speeds were dramatically faster than my 512K DSL and the upload speeds averaged betweem 14 and 40K. The 40K average only showed up on large transfers. I have a feeling that large buffer sizes in some portion of the satellite unit are the key to the slowness, but there may also be rebroadcast regulations that play into the speed.
    Anyhow, maybe this is helpful.
