  1. Nothing is new under the sun on Politicizing Science · · Score: 2

This is what things were like already 500 years ago, with the Holy Church agreeing or disagreeing with the finds of science. The finds that were Christian enough were good, those which were not were... flogged or burnt or take your pick.

Nothing is new under the sun. Tell you what, I even think that "Christian enough" still holds. :-/

That's the whole point. Nobody is established to have committed a crime until they are convicted of it.

Suspects are not convicts, and are not without rights (such as anonymity). Especially not when they only exist as "suspects" in a non-law-enforcement organization.

  6. I don't buy this on FTC Encourages Consumers to Forward Them Spam · · Score: 1

Why did I get that equipment? Because I got tired of watching movies on a 19" computer screen.

  8. Who cares if it affects code quality? on Do Long Work Hours Affect Code Quality? · · Score: 2

Your employment contract probably says you should work 40 hours a week for x amount of dollars. That's a contract that works both ways.

When you buy a house, do you give the seller 500k if the contract says 350k?

When you rent a car, do you give the company twice the money that the contract says, just because you feel you should?

    Like hell you do.

So why do you feel obliged to give more than agreed in writing in the work contract? The employer isn't going to give you any more than what's written down. It's just stupid to give your time away for free. Your employer is just a business partner, and you shouldn't give them the most valuable thing you have - your time - for free.

Always take care of yourself first, because no one else is.

  9. Market uptake has little to do with standards on Combined DVD Burners Coming Soon · · Score: 2

DVD burners are slow on uptake because there are different standards, you say?

Gee. Here was I, thinking the reason I didn't buy a DVD burner was primarily the cost of the media, compared to CD-R. As long as I don't need to master a DVD, but just need data backup, CD-Rs come at 35 cents a gig, whereas DVD-Rs are around a dollar a gig still.

So my question to myself is "Would I pay three times the money for a disc burner, and three times the price for the media, to get them on DVD format instead of CD?". My answer to that question is "no".

I don't care too much about the competing standards - both DVD-R and DVD+R can be read in a regular DVD reader, and as long as that's the case, the media format would be a non-issue when selecting a DVD burner, as far as compatibility goes.

I cannot imagine I am the only human on Earth to reason this way.

(Yeah, yeah, I know, it'll be cracked from here to eternity etc. I'm counting on that. Speaking of that, what's your experience with the USB dongle in that regard?)

Further, I agree with your analysis that games are going networked and have all the protection they need through that. High-end apps will continue to use dongles (preferably USB). Mass-market apps like Office can't require the CD to be in the drive. End of story. :-)

  15. This is actually quite OK on FEC Permits Anonymous SMS Spam · · Score: 2

There's a key difference between e-mail spam and anonymous SMS. Where anon SMS can be used for, say, flirting or a number of social events, it cannot be used in bulk without putting a plentitude of nickels on the cashier's desk.

Spam costs relatively nothing, SMS still costs a nickel or two to send. Do you really think a spammer will shell out $100k to reach a million mobile subs with his "Enlarge your penis now!!" message?

I don't see the danger of misuse for spam as that high - I see the pros outweighing that risk.

(However, I still think Europe has a better charging model where the initiating party always pays in full for the telecom transaction - you never pay to receive in Europe, except in a few special circumstances which you are always aware of when they occur and have to deliberately initiate. But that's another story altogether.)

Silly fools. Marketing anything as "uncrackable" is going to shoot you in the foot. This is no more secure than SafeDisc, it just requires a patch to the binaries (don't check that disc) and you're good to go.

If a computer can read it, it can be cracked.
