  1. Athlon on Intel Releases Xeon, Look At Those Kernels Compile · · Score: 5

For those of you who can't be bothered to read the entire article, the most interesting part by far is the real-world database benchmark towards the end. The 1.2GHz Athlon places right smack in the middle between the single Xeon and the dual Xeon (both 1.7GHz).

That makes it highly likely that a dual Athlon will significantly outperform the dual Xeon, does it not?

Even though dual Athlon systems aren't available yet, I'm willing to bet that when they are, the price tag of one such system will quickly drop far below the price tag of one of those dual Xeon beasties.

So yes, please, make them go away.

On the other hand, I wish I'd started up a company offering ringtones about a year ago. Around here, one ringtone goes for the equivalent of about $1. Sending one out can't cost more than a cent or two. Just imagine the money they must be making, and you'll sympathize with those who want royalties.

  14. Sigh.. on Review Of Small Business Suite for Linux · · Score: 5
It took quite a bit of guessing -- and cursing -- before I found the step that I had missed. Unfortunately, the errors the Installer generated weren't too helpful, and seemed to indicate that I had run out of disk space - with 8 GB to spare, I knew that wasn't the problem. Once I had figured out the real culprit, everything worked like a charm.
Reviewers do this way too often. Describe a big messy problem in the install process, but fail to add the short line pointing out the mistake they made. Way to go, now everyone gets to make the same mistake!
  15. Walking on Glass on 1TB In A Cubic Centimeter · · Score: 2

Walking on Glass is a novel by Iain Banks (who also authors SF novels under the "pseudonym" Iain M. Banks), in which the flowing of glass is described. As a way of implying that a castle is impossibly old, the author lets one of the main characters find a row of window frames with the glass "spilled out", covering the floor. Now, knowing how complex Banks' novels always are, I won't even speculate on what he knew about the lack of scientific proof for this (nonexistant?) phenomenon. Probably he didn't care. But personally, I see no reason not to believe that glass can flow, but I'd imagine timeframes of tens or hundreds of thousands of years would be necessary to see any effect at all. Someone should build a big glass wall, invent time travel, and find out for us :)

  16. Future implementations on Retinal Scanning Displays · · Score: 2

I can't find it now for some reason, but about a year ago a saw a very cool piece of concept art at Microvision's site: A pair of sunglasses with a small laser mounted near one ear, which beamed the laser onto your retina by way of a tiny reflective spot on the inside of the glasses.

I wonder how long till that implementation of this technology is available in the stores? (I want to hope 5-10 years, but 15 seems more realistic.)

  17. Re:Interesting, but a bit short of data. . . on 1TB In A Cubic Centimeter · · Score: 1

Very good point, although I think room-sized is a bit too pessimistic. I saw an article on a very similar technology a few weeks ago, and the reading/writing unit was described as being fridge sized.

Now, we could start arguing how big a fridge they meant, or how small a room you meant, but I think that's pointless. I think, as someone else pointed out here, the fact that they're using a rare compound will be the limiting factor in getting this technology out to consumers.

..telling someone who has been working on a Mac or Windows that they need to take a month out to learn EMACS is just silly.

What? A month to learn Emacs?

I recently switched to Linux from Windows here at work. I had been doing my web developing in Homesite, finding it a fairly good application, but far from perfect. When I switched to Linux, a coworker introduced me to Emacs.

It did seem a bit complex at first, but I was very much up to speed after a few days, and after the first few weeks I was doing my programming much faster. Now, after several months, I can honestly say that I'm doing simple tasks at least twice as fast as before. I won't use another text editor again, and especially not a glorified one which eats memory as bad as Homesite does.

I do realize others might not be as easily comfortable with all the key bindings of Emacs, but a month? Come on..

That aside, your advice is sound, I'm just worried that any sort of investment would be too much of a risk these days. I'll probably lay low for a while, concentrate on enhancing the service, and see how things play out. My budget can take it for a little while longer.

Good thing I'm not relying on this for my primary source of income :)
