I have the ability and software to hook my police scanner to my computer and do VOX recording (actually nothing tricky, I plugged the scanner headphone jack into the line-in on the computer and found some freeware VOX software that will use any Windows installed codec for compression on the fly). Anyway.. During the sniper scare in DC last year I happened to catch a few of the incedents. I learned a lot about human nature listening to these recordings. You would not believe how many people were calling 911 with incedents of white vans cutting people off, speeding, driving erratic, reckless and suspicious after a shooting incedent. For those that do not live in this area, the police basically shut down every highway, exit, and bypass when these shootings happened and it basically shut down the Washington/Baltimore/Northern VA area everytime looking for a white van. It seems that every white van in the peoples eyes was doing something "wrong". Well in northern VA there are thousands and thousands of white vans, it is a booming contruction market here and they are everywhere. Human nature lead those that called to not see things as they really were but tainted by the hype of these crazy white vans, they were absolutely sure they had found the snipers and would stretch the truth to ensure they were heard by the police. IMHO, this was a major reason why it took so long to actually find the real snipers, everyone was so preoccupied with the white vans they saw nothing else that mattered, it turned out to be an old Chevy Impala. I do not believe the average person could monitor cameras or be in charge of determining security risks without too many false alarms. You can only cry wolf so many times.

He made us rewire the entire things and neaten up the wires. I'm not a neat freak but I am not a slob either. The way he wanted it done it was impossible to track down any wires or work on any wires without completely undoing the bundles and starting over. He wanted the closer wires to be shorter so they would not have to be looped around the tray so instead of using prefabbed wires we had to cut and crimp our own in roughly 6in increments (some 18in, 24in, 30in etc..) He did not give a crap about the router upgrades we did, the uptime charts we had, the firmware upgrades, the cooling system or the UPS's we installed to keep the equipment running, all he wanted was a clean looking room in case any of his bosses vistited our site and wanted to look around. It was very obvious he could not impress anyone with his technical ability or oversight, so he decided to go the "neat" route.

All it does is provide +12v and ground or open and close contacts via relays (high current) or a transistorized circuit (low current like less then 300ma). to simulate the key in the various positions. That being said.. I believe it IS possible for this to happen but you would have to be extremely unlucky based on what a remote starter actually does. Bullshit..

    Bandwidth (about $50-130/mb wholesale)

Number of computers in a home environment does not automatically mean more BW. It may come in spurts but not more overall. I go online and do certain things every day. I can do this before, after, or during the times the kids are on and use the same exact BW either way. My firewall is reject unless specifically allowed (limits trojans and spurious connections), I use squid and have every PC set to use it via a proxy.pac autoconfig (currently at over a 45% hit rate after 80k requests) and a caching DNS server.

    Customer support (additional troubleshooting)

Maybe, maybe not, I also think this would reduce support as you can eliminate probles related to your PC as you can try another one, or blame it on the ISP.. I would also suggest that a person with a multipc setup is probably smarter then the average computer user and would call support less.

Security (more machines, more chance for trojans, etc)

This is laughable. It would be much safer to have 15 computers behind a NAT box/firewall then one Windows or misconfigured Linux machine directly connected.

Repairs (the guy with six people sharing a cable modem is going to expect instant service restoration, whether he's paying for it or not)

So what your saying is everyone with one computer should not expect good service and fast repairs? They just sit back and wait for the ISP to find the problem and they should not expect the service to work when they need it?

You do have points but those can not be seperated into those with and without NAT.

And frankly, it ain't your network. If you want to start up an "all the bandwidth you want for free" ISP, knock yourself out.

What do you mean set one up, they are everywhere. Check the advertisements for Comcast, RR, Verizon, Speakeasy, and many others. They all say pretty much the same... Unlimited internet and connected all the time so your online experience is fast and quick. Maybe they should change their tune. Kind of like my cell phone plan.. Unlimited nights and weekends, free long distance, unlimited phone to phone, and unlimited web access. Do you think I should feel guilty when I use it? I don't, that's what they are advertising and that's what I bought the damn things for. Sure as shit, I browse the web with the phone whenever i want, I call all my relatives after 9:00pm or any time during the weekend, and I call phone to phone just because I can.
