Not to say I did not love the Lord of the Rings but unquestionably the best of all time? Please remember that the Foundation Trilogy by Issac Asimov beat the Lord of the Rings for best Sci-fi/Fanstasy trilogy of all time back in the 70's.
If we re-elect the Liberal Party they have promised to do this for the whole country. Any Canadians will cringe when they hear that it is written in the third red book but hey, its a nice dream.
I live in Ottawa, Canada and I subscribe to Bell Canada High Speed Edition. For $30 dollars a month (I bought the modem, $40 if you don't) you can get 1 megabit per second DSL. The transfer rates seem to top out at about 600k most of the time but I live pretty far from the switch. I chose this over cable modem which is also availible to me. Recently a microwave company has come on line promising 3 megs for $40 dollars a month and another DSL company is offering 2.2 megs but it is pretty expensive. All I can say is I have more choices when in comes to high speed internet than I know what to do with and I live in Canada.
I used to go to a school in California that subscribed to a service called Channel 1. Basically in excange for free TVs and VCRs the school would show us an add ridden, could not be called news by any stretch of the immagination, "news" program that lasted about 20 minutes a morning. While it was a great time to get some homework done it was sickening to see how low schools had to go to get equipment. The really sad part is that even though they got all that gear very few teachers even used it.
It was amazing how many people took it for real news. Some of their tech coverage bordered on blantant lying.
Actually there is a plan to use airships as highspeed communication relay points. Like cheap satelites. I believe that they will be solar powered. Sorry, I don't remember anything else. If anyone knows the details please let me know.
More is nice (I always aim for around 50) but once you get abouve 30fps the movement appears smooth to your eyes. BTW - cartoons are only 24 fps. The only advantage to more frames (once you hit 32bit color 1024x728) is that when you get a lot of characters in the frame (happens once or twice) you won't drop down to around 25 fps for a second. This momentary drop is beyond insignifigant and happens so rarely that you can ignore it.
One product that can easily be replaced by a multitude of others does not and cannot make or break a product. Lets be reasonable here, Its like saying a DVD player will fail if it cannot play one movie.
ok...
I'm biased but here is my take on it.
This is not a screamer but it certainly is solid
Athlon 700ish (Duron if you want to save some $)
128 megs of pc133 SDRAM - not negotiable
Asus A7V motherboard - my pick, Abit is good too (this is the latest AMD interface, socket A, make sure your chip is socket A)
Normal user - TNT2
Gamer - Geforce 1 (2 is a waste)
ATA 66 HD (big) ATA-100 if you have the money
a nice monitor - you won't regret it
Sound Blaster Live Value
Cambridge Sound Works speakers
the rest is pretty standard
This may be more than you want to spend but you should be able to get a good deal if you shop around online. Don't skimp on the monitor, your eyes will thank you.
Deep Thought was the computer in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy that took 8 billion years to calculate the meaning of life. 7x7=42
Earth was built as a more powerful computer to replace Deep Thought.
I'm going to avoid pointing out the obvious. The cube would be packaged in such as way that you could not loose it. You need interface anways, you can't just will the information from the cube.
I've had enough of this Canada bashing. It should be noted that we have beavers, moose, trees, rocks, water, Stockwell Day (Yanks may not know him but he is a hoot), the CN Tower, and Celine Dione. Plus the Arrogant Worms to sing about us.
The Arrogant Wroms
PS. We are not planning an invasion, 90% of us live on the border anyways.
Tell me about it,
They make me prove I can type faster than 50 wpm to get a bloody A. Only prob is the keyboards have gum under every other key. Kinda hard to type if the keys don't come back up.
(I got a good keyboard, everyone else failed)
The best though is the little screen that comes up before the login that tells me not to try and login unless I'm an authorised user. Kind of like telling a crook not to enter a house unless he lives there. All it is in another bloody popup to click through. At the speeds those computers run at this adds a few seconds of pain on a good day.
Good idea, it would be really cool if we covered a robot in this stuff to give it more sensory capabilities. Like a human being that can pinpoint where contact is comming from and can tell the position of its arm by how flexed each joint is. This has the potential to give 'bots that capability - massive processing power required for a whole body suite however.
Maybe AMD should label their products differently: 650 Duron (Performs like 766 Celeron)
Its no longer CRAP, they changed the name after Cretin (pun intended) made fun of it.
my point was that you cannot declare Lord of the Rings to be absolutely better, I was not necessarily saying Foundation was better.

So much for those Canada jokes, eh

Go figure, some one had to say it.

Let it also be noted that anyone who so much as tries to reverse engineer a WebTV terminal will be shot.
Whoever made something that will not run on an Athlon and knowingly released it, which I gather they did, is a flaming moron. 'nuff said
duh, Sledgehammer vs. Itanium Spitfire (Duron) vs. Celeron Athlon vs. Pentium III or even Coppermine I think the winner is self-evident.
And all the comp. sci. teachers will perform ritual beatings on people who claim their ISP is Netscape.
I wish I had mod points, that kicks ass

karmawhore
Whoever ranked that funny is on the ball
but are you not to love your neighbour?
