I admit that I havent read the relate article to this/. post. However, who's to say that such people provided any such "real value" to their projects?
I've not had any difficulties charging $75/hr for my hardware/software work. However, I do not feel that charging simply by the hour is a proper metric for "valued computer work". Rather, I charge based on my clients' satisfaction w/ project. (i.e. If I promise a certain feature and it's not done on time, I don't make and excuse and charge extra, I'll finish the feature and accept the prior established price)...
Maybe I'm too jaded or maybe th industry is so full of itself it doesn't matter whether competence is available? Out of 100 IT people I've met this past year, approx 75 have turned out to be bullsh-t artists claiming to be "experts" yet only understanding Dreamweaver or FrontPage (egads!!!)!
The old adage "Provide true value to earn true profit" is still true today as it was hundreds of years ago.
I'm sick of people with no talent/skills whining about IT's "tough" market now that the fantasy bubble burst and many peoples' lack of talent is showing...
"'Unix on the desktop' has come along way in recent years..."
There's a difference between along and a long.

since when has either Democrat or Republican in office given a hoot to what their constituents think?
Both sides play the lobby game and all of them could give a crap about what any "regular voting citizen" thinks or wants and they vote legislation by looking at their wallet... Whoever, dumps more to them gets it.

Get your hand out my pocket-book... Spend your *OWN* private funds on their "reimbursement" rather than have everyone else do it if you care so much.

Ok, let's get all the extreme left-wingers out and have them parade around proclaiming that the rise in temps in Alaska are caused definitely by global warming.
Except..... it's not always global warming.... I recall reading somewhere that temps over the last 400 hundred years (or so) have, at times, fluctuated wildly and the Industrial Revolution was only the last 200 years of it.
Maybe I'm too cynical, but I'm sick of EVERYONE blaming every odd day on "global warming" and the "evil" that it is.... We are having an effect on the climate, but its not quite as bad as you freak extreme-left alarmists would have us believe. (If you voted for Al Gore, you are a freak, end of story)
The weather *IS* unpredictable and *CAN* and *WILL* fluctuate over time. Our concept of time is sooooo narrow....... a fluctuation that lasts 500 years or so is nothing to the planet, but to us, thats an eternity..
Ok. I'm ready for the flames:) (you socialistic, gov't-loving cowards;) )
I feel Blizzard deserves to control how the game plays, offline or online. Incredible amounts of creativity, thinking, time, work and money went into making Diablo II (or any other Blizzard game), and I just don't see why anyone else should have the freedom to change how their games play.
So according to this logic, if you buy a new car, then you should NOT modify or change any aspect of how the car rides or performs ever because its an insult to the teams of creative engineers who designed and fabricated it?
How about a house? You buy a new house but heaven forbid you change the carpets, paint, wallpaper, tile or even consider putting up/taking down a wall or changing a bedroom into a study because it takes away from how the house was INTENDED to be used.
Bah.
I bought it. Its mine. I will do whatever I like with it even if its new and different from their intentions (as long as its within the law; i.e. no hacking bank accounts with it, etc.)
And if I find a way to enhance for myself and maybe a few buds of mine, well so be it. Thats the fun of tinkering, the older great American pastime (before litigation became so damn popular in the 80's/90's).
Here in my town (Waltham, MA) we have (2) Cable providers that offer internet, tv, and phone. One is AT&T Broadband (who booted me earlier this year) and the other is RCN (who have been a little less bitchy). Service is decent..
Oh damn.... I remember those things.. they drove me nuts for hours on end in my teens... (I think i was 14 or so... but who knows?) That roller-coaster thing was a riot;)
Although... which construction set was it that had those damn red "riveter" things that would punch in those black rivets into those mostly grey flat pieces?? This goes back to when I was like 7 or 8 (1982? 83?)....
Maybe I'm just having a psychotic episode...
I wish I could see that new toy site.. But being/.'d sucks... Maybe/. might want to alert sites that are going to be hit up to invest in more bandwidth/server ability? (hey, my webservers avail on a mostly free OC48;) )
The day that new toys come out that don't offer any challenge to kids is a very sad day indeed...... I had too damn many when I was a kid...
My guess tells me that something will go horribly wrong and the Mir will tumble out of orbit on 2001-03-21 15:32:09 uncontrollably and chunks of unburned station will rain down on some major city in Europe. But thats just me.:)

I suppose we all tend to think of temperature being raised. So, what's wrong w/ a 3 degree drop? Fight Global Warming
Alarmist propaganda is increasingly labeled news these days.....
We still get mail when it snows.....
I'm Italian... and American (dual national)... However, remember Italy is run mostly by socialists and the communist party is reasonably strong there.
Couple that w/ the fact that 97% of Italians are Catholic and the current situation is clear..

I spend almost every summer in Italy and I've never
seen a SmartCard reader in any retail stores anywhere
in Italy.. Although, the Italians are usually a bit behind.
Now that I think of it, I didn't see any SC readers
in England either.... or in Iceland..
However, the Europeans are far more willing to embrace
technology since many of their old-fashioned systems
(i.e. utilities, govt) are so bass-ackwards that they NEED
the newer technologies. I find the Euro GSM-based cell system
to be FAR superior to our U.S. system, They have far more
advanced cell phones that are plenty cheap which is why
I picked up a tri-band Motorola GSM phone last summer there
for under $200 (and I even got my VAT tax back, woohoo!)
And all I get are compliments from everyone on how many
more options it has. But anyways.. Europe is the place to be
for Chic and High-techno... However, you have to deal with the
high taxes... (Italy has a 52% flat income tax rate).
"there are so many people who want to fill these positions"?!?!?!?!
Umm.. here in Mass, theres something like 1000 teaching jobs that won't be filled come Labor Day because they can't find people interested....
that was rather unpleasant........... :/
