Can you blame kids for not wanting to go outdoors when they are in serious danger of being shot by the police for walking down the street? http://thefreethoughtproject.c...
A locked safe is not a good analogy. A better analogy would be a page hand written in a code. Could the courts force the accused to explain the code they used to write on the page? The fifth amendment guarantees your right to remain silent and not be forced to say anything that may be used to incriminate you. The phone's unlock code clearly meets that criteria and should be protected speech.
Personally I think we've given up too much of our freedoms now.
What about my freedom to use the medical practitioner of my choice? What about my freedom to partake in the medical procedures of my (and my Doctor's) choice? Why do you get to decide what "freedoms" I get to exercise?
Why is it that the people who most loudly shout about defending "freedom", are the ones that want to control who I marry, which bathroom I use, and which god I pray to?
[...]start funding research on a better launch mechanism, like a mass driver or whatever. So you want NASA to invest in a giant canon that can sling a warhead across the entire globe? And you don't think some other nations might have a problem with that?
I like your idea of giving the fines to the people, I'd rather see fines eliminated, they unfairly punish lower income people -- $150 fine to a corporate lawyer is pocket change, to a fast food worker it means not being able to pay rent. Replace it with community service. Get caught speeding, do 10 hours community service. Get caught excessive speeding, do 25 hours community service.
This has the bonus of costing the city / county / state money to supervise the community service and they will then direct the cops to only ticket people who are violating traffic laws AND are endangering the public.
If the use of the tool and the workings of the tool can't be examined in court, then any evidence provided by the tool or any evidence found because of any information provided by the tool can't be trusted in court. "Trust us" isn't good enough in a court of law.
So I can't answer a phone call because it would cause me to be distracted, but big-business corp can distract the hell out of every driver on the road and that's OK because.... money?
The problem with your plan is it would be obstruction. You are destroying information the government has requested you provide obstructing their investigation. If you wipe the phone prior to the government requesting it you've done nothing wrong.
If you're concerned about the government accessing your cell phone or computer while you cross the border, wipe it and restore it at your destination.
The Democrats lost, as they have been losing for several years, because they've ignored a large segment of the population who rightfully feel like the Democrats don't care about them.
Despite what the Stock Market or other "stats" may show, many, many people (and areas) in the US are not doing well financially and the Democrats have ignored their plight. The Democrats ignore the issues important to many of the people in the 'Red' states and when they do notice them, chastise the people for having them.
So it's not surprising they voted against the Democrats and for someone who actually talked to them and to their concerns. The fact that it was all bull is besides the point. The Democrats are going to continue to fail until they can understand why a very large portion of the US hates them and then does something to change that opinion.
Kinda like the U.S. policy that U.S. citizens have to pay U.S. taxes on income earned abroad could hypothetically cause a U.S. citizen to owe more than 100% in taxes
No it can't. You claim a Foreign Tax Credit for any income tax paid to a foreign government and it's deducted from your tax payable in the US. For example if your US tax rate was 35% and your foreign tax rate was 30%, you would pay 30% to the foreign government and then 5% (35% - 30%) to the US government.
If this new super-lightweight metal can't be used to finally build me a flying car, I don't care about it...:) smiley face included for the humour impaired.
That's BS; most people pirate stuff because they don't want to pay, plain and simple,[...]
That's true, and that's why services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, Google Play Music, Pandora and others are never going to be popular or make any money...
The lawsuit(s) being filed are to determine ownership of the parcels of land. Not to force the sale of the land.
Zuckerberg is suing to find out who owns the land so that he can negotiate to purchase the land from them. Right now he can't purchase the land because no one knows who owns it.
He is not suing to force the sale, he is suing to make the sale possible.
In other news, the FBI is paying cable installers for tips on people keeping illegal items in their homes.
Side note: Cable installers are making $1,000 for each $20 bag of weed they hide in people's homes.
Baywatch lost me as a potential viewer when the ad for it includes a scene of The Rock taking a dick-pic of a corpse...
Make better movies Hollywood.
If using biometrics is optional, those who don't will be seen as subversive and face greater scrutiny. "If you haven't done anything wrong..."
They will also be the first ones bumped/dragged from flights.
1. Buy system.
2. Install system inside Faraday cage.
3. Profit.

As a statistician I'm curious to learn what comes after "100% likelihood", or as we colloquially like to call it, "certainty".
If the current likely hood is 0.002%, and it went up 5,000% (50 times) the new likely hood would be 0.1%.
That's what Parallel Construction is for...
Unfortunately you're right...

If you're eating at fast food restaurants you're not worried about your health, so this is truly a non-story.

This plan would drive more people into liberal arts degrees and away from STEM degrees, it's a bad plan.
There is no surprise here, it's difficult to deny scientific facts if your scientists are allowed to share actual facts.
