    "Reluctant" like somebody was holding a gun to his head, forcing him to sign, or "reluctant" because he was losing some political skirmish? Either way, he signed the fucking thing, even though he has actively did his special magical presidential veto more times than all other presidents in history. I can't believe that he was all that "reluctant".

    But I'll agree with you... it's the fault of both King Bush and the Congress.

    In case anybody has already forgotten... a few weeks ago, King Bush just signed an order to spend 1.2 Billion to build a 700 mile wall between US and Mexico. That's 25 times as large as the Berlin Wall. Are they going to shoot US citizens that try to leave, now?

    Well, if it's worth their time to spend $100 every few months instead of spending time learning about it, then they should keep doing what they're doing. You don't seem to understand what I'm saying. Think about a plumber. Earning $50/hour. If that plumber has to spend 20 hours learning "how his computer works (ie: getting Linux working)", that's $1000. That plumber would have to be a total idiot to waste his time dicking with his computer.

    You should learn how to grow your own food. All of it. Teach you to eat, eat for a lifetime, right? You DO farm all of your own food, right? Otherwise, you may be an idiot...

    why not use it as a platform to help educate/change the world so not everyone becomes an idiot?

    Because there's no REASON for people to have to learn how to use their PC's, any more than everybody in the world should know how to rebuild a carbureator. We have this thing in all modern societies called "division of labor". Few people churn their own butter, slaughter their own meat, or make their own clothes. That has enabled modern man to advance technology to its current state in which anybody can drive a car, use a telephone, or use a computer. I have no time, money, or interest in re-learning how to check my email. I have no time, money, or interest in going backwards in time to re-learn how to use any kind of command line to use my PC. Why should I?

    I spend my time running my business, fucking my girlfriend, and doing what I feel like doing.
    I would say that people who obsess about configuring Linuxth are idiots for wasting their time on something that is *completely and utterly pointless* unless you career happens to be "Unixth Administhrator".

    Seriously. Give me one good reason why I should have to learn how my computer works. Give me one reason as it relates to me, personally. Just one.

    In Windows, when it can't find my video driver, you get basic VGA with 256 colors. That's enough to either find the damned CD, or go to the manufacturer's website to download it. Worst case scenario: you can't find the driver at all, but you still have a working machine. Compare that to Linux. Last few times I've had that problem with Ubuntu or RedHat, I get some cryptic messages, then I get dumped out to a command prompt. That's a non-useable machine for anybody who is not a professional Unix administrator. I'll pick ugly vs. unuseable any day.

    That's good to know that Linux may have somewhat better support for bleeding edge hardware. Unfortuantely for those of us who can't afford shiny new hardware, Linux is pretty much useless on anything that's more than a few years old. I've got about 10 PC's, all from thrift stores, or cast-offs. On all of them, there was some kind of show-stopper that kept Ubuntu from working. On all of them, I ended up going back to Windows 2000 (or XP). I DID get Ubuntu working once on one machine, but the performance was absolutely abyssmal and that machine went back to Windows, too.

    I've never had a brand new bleeding edge PC (what the hell is a "SATA" drive?), so that's good info to know if I ever hit the lottery. Until then, Windows 2000 on my $25 thrift store machines works better than anything else.

    Oh yeah. That's why people are flocking to Linux on the desktop. So that they can edit each and every individual flat file by hand. Oh sure. That's what I like to do on a Friday night. Why have a life when you can be a slave to your PC? You know what... why stop there? I want to be able to manually edit what goes in each block of memory at any one particular time. I don't want to USE my PC. I want to perpetually FIX my PC! Yeah! Who are these crazy people who want to be able to easily install and use programs on their PC's? What are they thinking?

    Silly people. Some people probably think that loyalty to other people is more important than their hunk of plastic and metal mass-produced in China! How ridiculous! Family, friends, mentors, employers.... eh. I could care less. Now this piece of mass produced plastic... THAT'S something that I can really get behind! Sorry, Mom, but the 30+ years you spent taking care of me doesn't even begin to compare to my iPod!

    Consistent UI. Consistent API making development easier (ala VB6). Streamline updates. Make it less easy to break. Consolidate 5000 flat files and make a registry-like thing.

    There are about a million things that they could do to improve it. I still say I'd really like to see what they could do with it.

    Is this possible? I think it is. I think that this might be the end result of it. If MS takes an interest in SUSE, I think that we'll finally see a useable version of Linux for the desktop. I personally would *LOVE* to use a version of Linux that MS has made useable.

    Also, maybe even more importantly, tt would be like another OSX, but it would run on regular hardware. If anything, Apple may be in serious trouble...

    Wow! I REALLY want a Wii! Look what you get:

    1. A gimmicky controller that will become annoying after 10 minutes of use.

    2. A whole line of games with gripping storylines geared at those 12-and-under players, such as "Mario stomps mushrooms" and "Mario drives a toy car" and "Zelda looks for the ultra-super-mega-lucky spirit sword to rescue his/her boy/girlfriend!"

    3. A console that does NOT play DVD movies (unlike all of the others)

    4. And now... 1990 quality graphics!

    I'm running right out to buy one today! Sounds like a great product! I'll put it right next to my 8 Track player, and my copy of Pong.

    Since the PS3 likely only has a 30 day warranty, I think it's pretty important to find out if has heat issues before I plunk down $600+ on a product that I think has a risk of dying after 2-3 months, thus well past the time I could get a warrantied replacement.

    No, Sony has always had a one year warranty on their Playstations, and they most definitely honor them. I've had several replaced due to the DVD drive wearing out (I use mine as my main DVD player). Their replacements have always been fast and easy.

    Besides, Sony has a pretty decent track record of producing products that aren't DOA. If you want to avoid easily breakable consumer electronics, I'd look at Apple.

      Discounting everything else - it's one of the first (if not the first) products to use a Cell processor.

    It's one of the first CONSUMER products to use a cell processor. Cell processors have been used in tiny gadgets and big iron for several years. It's proven to be, well, awesome.

    Oh... you also completely failed to address the possible FIRE HAZARD aspect.

    If I was that worried about a fire hazard, I wouldn't have a stove in my house. As it is, I'm not worried, and yes, I do have a stove in my house, as well as a fireplace, matches, lighters, and other things that cause fires more often than the occasional one-in-a-million fires from electronic gadgets. I find it hard to believe that a multinational corporation would expose themselves to the liability of having many thousands of their products catch on fire. Their battery problems were not all that widespread, and they issued a complete recall. I assume that since you're so worried about safety, that you don't drive a car, do you?

    So then, when I pay my power bill every month, based on usage, where is that money going? Is it vanishing into thin air? People ALREADY pay for their power usage. They already pay for the power plants. They're paying for the scrubbers on the smokestacks. What do you think the power bill pays for, exactly? The gov't says that coal plants must implement procedures X to prevent pollution. It costs $x. Our power bills go up 0.00001% of $x to pay for said procedures. What part of this process are you not understanding?

    You're missing the point, completely. Whatever their manufacturing problems are, I really don't care. Neither should you. You're buying the end product. If it works, great. If it doesn't, you get your money back. Why analyze every step of the R&D and manufacturing process of this stupid thing? Do you analyze ythe toothbrushes that you buy this much? Are you aware where the material for the bristles comes from? Are they having problems in the extruding process? How about the paint? Is Crest having problems mixing the green paint today? I mean really...

    "missteps"? Who cares? I'm not a stockholder. I'm not an employee. I'm just a guy who likes to play video games. If the PS3 is as good as it's supposed to be, I'll buy one and enjoy it. I honestly don't care one way or the other about what the press has been saying about what's going on behind the scenes. That's like being interested in the production problems with a hairbrush. It's about as interesting (and relevant to anybody who isn't an owner) as watching grass grow.

    Power consumption? Jesus christ. If there's one thing that I don't have any time or interest to look at, it's my power bill. If my power bill is $10/year higher than it would be otherwise, then any time, including the time it takes me to write this stupid post, is a complete waste.

    It uses more power. Big deal. I'd wager that there is not a single person on the planet that will not buy a PS3 because of power consumption. Not one.

    Did you know that tires for a Corvette (at least a few years ago) are at least $400 each? Do you know why most people don't know that? 1. Most people don't own a Corvette. 2. Those that do can afford the tires.

    This isn't news. This is some wacko gamer (Zonk?) who has some bizarre grudge against the PS3: a non-existent game console.

    C'mon guys. This is getting ridiculous. First off, this is just a game console. I don't understand how ANYBODY could feel that strongly one way or another about a game console. It's a plastic and metal box for playing GAMES. Secondly, the quality of Slashdot "reporting" is getting really, really, really, REALLY bad. The ONLY reason I still come here is to interact with other similar people. The articles (like the constant "PS3 suxors" stuff that this article is) are worse than 50% of the personal blogs out there right now.

    Sorry, but I think that the PC media player was perfected win Winamp 2.8. Literally. I think it's about as easy to use and powerful as you can ever get. iTunes is impossibly bloated and buggy. Windows Media Player is the most confusing interface I could ever imagine. Winamp is tiny, very powerful (if you want it to be), and *very* easy to use. I don't care how many shiny buttons MS MP and ITunes add, they both just get continueally worse with every version (and admittedly, so did the early Winamp 5.x versions). And really, how many different possible ways do you need to play music? How many iterations of "play" ans "stop" can there possibly be?
