You're right. Now that a bunch of middle management has gotten the boot, it'll be up to engineers to now: maintain their own buildings, do their own payroll, manage their own benefits, create their own marketing, develop their own packaging, do their own manufacturing, sell their own products....

You're either incredibly naive, or you've never held a real job if you think that a company like Intel canget by with "Very minimal management".

But, as other posters have pointed out, Intel isn't stupid. You can't just fire 1000 managers, and expect the technical people to "do their own thing". Expect a few thousand engineers to be canned soon (or gradually so that they don't have to report it to the public, like IBM has been doing for the past few years).

  5. PORN on Google's Click-Fraud Crackdown · · Score: 1

Bookstores, sure. But, as usual, the porn industry figured out that per click doesn't work many, mayn years ago, also. You really can't find any porn sites that pay per click any more. Based on the porn industry, Google may very well be fucked if they can't figure out a way to go "per signup" as the porn sites call it. Google's money stream is going to get turned off really quickly if they don't fix this. As is, they're not going to make as much as they make now because they're going to have to partner with advertisers and set up a "per sale" type of thing, instead of just letting anybody advertise as it is now.

It'll happen. As with the rest of the Net history, the porn industry always leads the way, and the porn industry dumped per click a long time ago. It's just a matter of how quickly Google can do it before they lose enough advertisers that they're in serious trouble.

What you're saying is why Slashdot "doesn't matter" any more to the Web community, and why it's becoming increasingly marginalized. I've been reading and posting here for many years, but I'm just about fed up with it, altogether.

How, exactly, do they "hurt the economy"? By creating billions of dollars in revenue every year which is paid out to the shareholders? By creating hundreds of thousands of jobs? Try using your brain. All in all, the experience wasn't bad. There were some good programs in the list. However, maybe just because I've been around PC's for so long, there are certain programs that I wanted to use, and was frustrated that they never worked. I don't know if this would bother regular people.

The only problem with this is sometimes (often), the catalog titles didn't even work right, then you're stuck with no alternative, and a new, expensive doorstop.

Suffice to say, I now use Windows.

DVD players that you can get in the grocery store for $49.99 play audio CD's, MP3 CD's, DVD single layer, DVD dual layer, DVD +R, DVD-R, DVD +RW, etc. Hell, My $100 PS2 does even better than that.! (I use My PS2 exclusively for entertainment. Love how easy it is.) As long as there's no physical difference in the format, the digital differences amount to just a few lines of code, which ends up being very cheap to combine on a tiny chip, even after those licensing fees. As long as the media doesn't physically change, there will be increasing convergence all of the time. Eventually, those cheap players that you can get at Wal-Mart will read HD, Blu-Ray, OGG, and WMA's. Just give it time. It'll happen.
