Ah, I love it... standards that nobody uses. It's a true oxymoron. That's so cute. Well, I'm working on my own standards for office documents now. I'll publish them soon, and anybody who doesn't conform to them is flat out evil.
Wow. I am impressed. A new PDA. There are only thousands of them out there now, already. This is so fucking exciting. I hear that Frigidaire has a new freezer out. It's bigger than other freezers. Why not post an article about that? It's just as exciting.
Linux distros can include a Java Plugin for their browsers
Ok, and this is going to help Sun, how? They're going to lose licensing revenue so that what? 1% of 1% of all computer users can install a Java plugin? That doesn't make any sense.
Eric, your car is in bad shape. It really is. All you have to do is let me have it, and I'll fix it for you! Of course, it'll be "our" car, but hey, it'll be fixed. I'm gonna need it... let's see.... every day. Do you mind?
Why, exactly? What problem is open source software going to solve for me? Right now, all of my machines do their jobs, and do them well. I'm not going to try software just for the hell of it. I have better things to do. There's got to be something there beyond the "gee whiz" factor. A new web browser? Uuuh... why? IE has been working fine for many, many years. Why should I go through the trouble? Right now, the only OSS I use is VNC, and that's because it solves a problem for me. Until I discover other OSS that actually *does* something that I need, I have no reason to waste time playing with software.
It's going to be a long time before MySQL even makes a dent in Oracle. It's obviously nowhere close to Oracle in performance and deatures, and even when it is, it still has about 20 years of abuse that it needs to take before it earns the reputation that Oracle has. I read this line, and in my mind, the credibility of this article went down the toilet.
At first, when I found BT, I was thrilled (once I figured the damn thing out). But now, I'm noticing that more and more trackers are bogging down, so even with hundreds of "leechers" and several "seeds", speeds can hover anywhere from 1-5KBps. That, and frequent tracker errors point out that trackers are apparently very resource intensive and can get bogged down quickly. Does anybody know if BT trackers are due to be improved any time soon? Many, many, many links on suprnova.org, point to trackers that are already swamped or dead, making BT not much better (or worse) than straight FTP.
I love the pictures. They're so painful, they're great. It's like watching a train wreck. I can't resist. A dozen of so uber-dorks in a tiny room, hunched over their laptops, building a product that what few people actually do use, use for free. It's soooo sad, I just love it.
A "professional body" isn't going to do anything. Let's say this guy is a memeber of The Loyal Order of Moose Engineers, chapter 471. He gets a reprimand, or he gets the boot from the professional organization. How does this solve the problem? As is, there's a mechanism in place already. They're called "lawsuits". Rest assured, that somebody is going to pay for this fuckup. Doubtful the engineer will personally pay, but his employer will, and we'll get canned. That's a much more severe correction than any professional body could ever accomplish.
You've obviously never seen a female Linux user. They look remarkably like the male Linux user: grossly obese, hairy, sweaty, smelly, lacking in social skills, and they often spit when they talk. It's anything but pretty.

Jesus, if you're at a university, we're all doomed. Try clicking the option that says "do nothing", then click the box that says "don't ask me again". I know that language like this is generally considered to be post-doc level, but try to wrap your mind around it.
The article seemed to fail to point out that these things are using OLD technologies... UFH? Jesus, that's been around for ages. Their basic data transmission seems to be just that... basic. . No bells and whistles. No wireless garbage. Not super fast. I see failures when people use cutting edge stuff. My business computers need to be ROCK SOLID. I don't use wireless. My hardware uses serial and parallel ports instead of USB/firewire/whatever. I use W2K as a platform. I use an external modem through a parallel port for important credit card stuff.
I use what has worked reliably for years and years. I'm not gonna risk my business being down because of some stupid gee-whiz technology that's only been out for a few years. Engineers that build solid, reliable, critical systems (financial, medical, avionics) do the same thing.
Maybe if you visited a non "Mega" store, you'd have some help. What you got is exactly what I'd expect from a big box store. If you want service, go to an independent store.

Not really. If you are afraid of configurability, just use the defaults, end of story. What's so complicated about that, huh?
Unfortunately, poring over pages and pages of configuration options tends to lend itself to a total lack of configurability. Case in point, last time I tried Linux, I spent hours and hours just trying to find how to change the goddamned screen resolution. The "default" was something like 1280x720 on a 14" monitor. Suffice to say, I had to wipe the hard drive and go back to Windows. Sure it's configurable, *if* you can find what to configure!
it takes weeks or months until you really get it and you can really take advantage of multiple desktops.
That's great, but at the current rate, you're forced to upgrade Linux every few months to get any kind of support. If it takes me that long to garner any kind of productivity out of countless "features", I'd better damn well be able to use those features for several years.

2. IE doesn't generate revenue for MS directly.

That's what so great about BT. As soon as somebody does that, their download speed drops to a crawl or stops altogether.
