  1. You're a tool. on The Psychology of Virus Writers · · Score: 3, Interesting

Any hacker with sufficient knowledge of how to do this also knows that we live 3 meals from anarchy; if the accounting and shipping systems of a major food chain go down because of your virus and can't be brought back up again, the food won't get delivered. What happens to the inner cities and suburbs? The farms? Other countries?

Kid, critical shit isn't connected to the Internet. It's just not. Web servers don't count as mission critical. I don't think that anybody died because of "Blaster". Hackers are *not* that important.

They all come from varied backround but almost all have 2 things in common; they faced conflict at a young age that they overcame, and that they overcame our school system dumbing down intact enough that they still have a love for learning and playing.

Yeah, you're describing dorks in school that got beat up. Boo-fuckin'-hoo. If you read the article you'd realize that she said that this is NOT the stereotypical virus writer.

Writing viruses is a crucial part of our society, if it weren't for these smaller groups we wouldn't know how insecure everything is and if we didn't know how insecure everything is, we wouldn't be trying to secure it

Insecure from what? Oh yeah, script kiddies telling us how insecure our boxes are. It's a vicious cycle. Security wouldn't be a problem if not for these little spoiled shits with too much time on their hands.

Take Independance Day (Yea, the movie with all those aliens and ships nuking us). Why did we win? Because the aliens had bad computer security, that's why.

That was the most ridiculous movie I've ever seen. That doesn't prove anything. And yes, you are nuts. Fucking nuts if you think that the movie "Independence Day" proves anything.

Oh, so it's wrong for me to figure out what's wrong with a computer and fix it, but it's right for microsoft to lie to millions of people and advertise their OS as secure then bribe judges to be nice to them?

Last I checked, virus writers aren't fixing anything.

Kid, you're delusional. Get a job. Get a life. Get laid.

Just because you haven't had a failure yet, doesn't mean that it's a very, very valid risk. NO hard drive should be jostled or jarred. The heads are so close to the platters on these super-capacity hard drives, that it's very easy to destroy a hard drive by whacking it really good. You wouldn't shake around your PC while it was running, would you?

Personally, I think that any kind of mobile hard drive device is a bad idea, and that's exactly why I'd never buy an iPOD. I don't need 40 gig of music. I'd much rather have a player with no moving parts.

I still never understood why the tech community was so quick to embrace this series as an icon

This is why I got out of tech a few years ago. Look at the tech community. Do you see any free thinking? New ideas? Hell, on /. on any given day, 1/2 of the posts are just regurgitated "MS sucks. Linux rules" posts. What truly NEW ideas have come out of tech? New things that come out of the tech industry are generally "this is faster, better, shinier", blah, blah blah. Techies read the white papers and obey. The tech industry is mostly groupthink, and that groupthink isn't all that bright. True new ideas and innovations very rarely eminate from here. It makes perfect sense for me that techies would idolize this movie. It's slicker, and shinier, but nothing that you really have to think about (hell, the "philosophy" behind the movie dates back to ancient Greek classical philsophy).

Oh yeah, and it's "Fuck you Red Hat". I don't think that "Fsck" is a word.

I think that you somehow missed the "Windows is very stable and secure if you know even a modicum about what you're doing" decision that the geek community has come to in the past few years. I'm not going to argue if you think that it's questionable whether or not W2K can run for 5-6 hours. That's just insane. And if you think that it costs a "lot" to upgrade from an old DOs windows to W2K, well, I just don't know what to tell you, since W2K costs less than that crappy software you're using. For someone whose business relies on a computer, you may want to learn a bit more before you make any rash decisions, because you still have a lot to learn.

  11. Re:Missing an important feature on Hercules USB DJ Console Reviewed · · Score: 1

Linux isn't necessarily going to help you. The problem is your hardware, or more than likely, your software. Of course W2K boxes run for more than 5-6 hours (I never vouch for the old DOS-based Windows... if you're using those professionally, that's your problem). Instead of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, you should probably just troubleshoot what's wrong with your current system. And what's to say that that Linux box with the same shoddy software and/or hardware is going to be any better?

(sigh) kids, kids, kids. You can make an initial approach, but that initial approach can be just a look or a gesture. You don't walk up to a woman and say some version of "I like you. Let's fuck." or "I really like and respect you. Let's date." The game isn't played like that. You make her come after YOU. And yes, you make her wait, because all of that waiting makes her want you even more. If she's interested, she'll wait until you're ready. It's called having a bit of self respect. Once you're in a relationship, THEN when the woman says, "Hey, let's have sex", you can safely say, "Sure!".
