However, if it works with electricity, how does it react when you put it in a magnetic field ? Is it like old music cassettes or floppies ? Do you lose your contents ?

It's only the idea of having a subjective filter between the real contents and what's actually displayed on the user's screen which is disturbing. The fact that it is coming from Microsoft is even more disturbing... At the moment, they switch it off by default, yes, but who knows what they're gonna do in the future ? I wonder if they have patented their "smart tags"... That would be interesting to know. In such case, it would mean that MS would be the only one allowed to subjectively influence the display of the pages and that's interesting. If not, then I suppose everyone is gonna go in that direction and this feature will be used by pros and anti-MS people with less "evil" impact on the end user.

The thing is that it is hard from a user's point of view to make a transition from the free Internet business model (where the majority of dotcom companies do not make ends meet) to the commercial model. I for one am willing to pay for some Internet services because that's the way commerce has always worked over the history. At the end of the day, it will still be cheap (we're talking about hundredths of cents there).

The only real problem I see with paying for the navigation is that you don't know before you download a page if it is what you need. And I believe you shouldn't have to pay for something you do not want. Is there any work around this ?

Let me reformulate: it's about probability of simultaneous events, not probability of sequential events. You're confused with the 2 notions.

The coins are tossed simultaneously in our case. There are statistically 75% of the chances that 2 hats are of one colour and 1 hat is of the other colour. It doesn't matter which case you're in, this will always apply due to the simultaneous nature of the toss. So if the two other hats are of the same colour, it's still 75%.

Sequential events are considered as being independent so if you tossed 2 coins and they correspond to the same colour and then, you toss a coin for the colour of your hat, then the probabilities are 50%. Take a look at your probabilities books.

n persons are sitting at their computers in a distributed fashion. They get the colors of the other people's hats on their screens. They have 3 buttons: red, blue, pass. They cannot communicate apart from this initial strategy.

The problem is quite obvious with 3 persons but it really gets tricky with more people because if the colors you see on your screen are not all the same, then this strategy does not work any more. You will not only have to calculate the probabilities that your hat is red or blue, but also you will have to make up your mind as to whether to hit pass. Perhaps setting a minimum level of probabilitiy will help like if out of 10 persons, you see that 8 of them have red hats, you are really entitled to hit the blue button whereas if 4 of them wear read hats, then you really should hit pass. That's the whole problem.

However, I don't understand how this would have more applications...

You are totally right. The last time the American puritans did it was for the Prohibition (1919-1933) and that's when, funny enough, the interest for forbidden spirits grew so much, mafia really rocketted and quality of alcohol was the worse (people would even drink methanol, get blind and die). Now they want to do it with sex... and it starts again. What about this sex boom, what about all this sex mafia in the eastern countries, what about the conditions in which the pictures are shot (snuff movies, child porn, ...) ?

    The solution is regulation. IMHO.

  21. Why not creating a quality label on No Slump For Sex Online · · Score: 2
The current boom towards sex stems from the fact that before the net, it was really hard to anonymously access this kind of information and knowing that people could see you getting into a sex shop or renting a porn video was discouraging enough for the majority. However, porn stuff is information (zeroes and ones) and with the net, anonymity is preserved in most cases.

Also, this is obvious, if sex is so successful, it means that there are a lot of buyers! Which means that online sex fills a gap, fulfils a need. In my opinion, sex is still a source of frustration for many, which comes from religion background mostly. If interest for religion continues to go down, sex will become *normal* and will no longer be associated with shame, guilt and evil. There are ethnies which live already very happily with sex and have been for centuries (ok they're not Christian, Islamic, ...).

To me, sex is not a problem at all as long as everybody is consentent. Where there is sex without unwanted violence, then there are no limits. However, I'm strongly against child porn because in probably 99% of the cases, the child is absolutely not consentent. This is why online porn is questionable... All the sites I've seen talk about lesbians, gays, ... (you name them), in short all the sex fantasies one would want to buy. But when they get into young teens they reach the limit of sexual maturity and the closer you get to it, the more unwilling the 'teens' may be.

Maybe a 'red label' (no pun intended) for quality should be put in place which guarantees that a porn site contains material with consenting actors only.

At last a bit of common sense!!

Thanks for bringing this point of view which I totally share. Reading the Slashdot posts sometimes makes me believe I'm a total alien but now I feel a little better.

A little similar story hapened to me 4 years ago. My car got bumped into anonymously on the company's parking. I was not really concerned about my car, as they say shit happens and this is why accidents happen, but I was quite unhappy about the fact that it was anonymous and I was sure that it was someone at work. So I sent an email to everybody in the company (40 people roughly) to explain my grief and in the end, I said as a joke "It can only be a woman can't it :))" with a smiley after to show that I was only joking. God!! If I was living 2000 years ago, these people would have stoned me to death. Had it happened in America, I would have been sued! The fact is that people who know me knew I was joking and that I am no sexist at all! However, people who don't know me thought I was a real bastard. The boss of the company told me that I could have been fired and sued for that! So I have some piece of advice, do not send 2nd degree material via email to people who do not know you well. ASCII text is not an efficient means to communicate politically incorrect things and should never be mixed with a joke at the pub.

Perhaps this employee wanted to do harm and knew he could shock people by sending his stuff. In such case, he should be punished. If he thought people would think it is funny, then it is utterly different and he should only be warned but by no means should his salary be docked!

Or maybe, I'm an alien after all! :)
