Yeah. Incredibly, my employer is an ISP, which makes it all the more bizarre that I cant telecommute...
Re ABA, well, thats a hot topic.
If anyone here is interested in reading a more balanced perspective on this subject, I would recommend the newsgroup alt.support.autism - but please dont slashdot it - it is a support forum, not a Q and A board.
Im diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome, and I can tell you that its no sham diagnosis.
I am a computer programmer. I have some of my code in the linux kernel, I had a great job programming, even if the pay wasnt good.
However, because of my social difficulties, I have been unable to cope with the challenges of communication in the workplace, and the commute, which together, have basically done me in.
I no longer have my job, and Im off on sick leave with a family of 4 to support (yes, we do have families, children, partners, etc.)
Im frankly shocked to find people minimising my condition. Just because Im not some drug addict loser with an IQ of 23, people assume Im not entitled to any support from the local council, to accomodate my problems. My employer doesnt uderstand or even/want/ to deal with my problems.
Please, people, think before you post - sure, AS and autism are overdiagnosed at the monment, but the population of Slashdot probably contains a VERY high percentage of Aspie (asperger) nerds and geeks. Who says we dont need some help?
Err. you dont have to plug your device in to get a ground. thats not what the straps are for.
if you connect your strap to a case and DONT plug it in, that is fine. the strap is there to allow you and the case to be at the same potential. As long as this is the case, you will NOT zap anything.
Simply holding the case whilst manipulating components is enough to protect them as you insert them.
In fact, hooking the case to mains ground is asking for MORE failures, as the harware you pick up is likely NOT to be at ground potential, so you will still zap it even then.
You f*cking americans are so arrogant. You presume your laws are respected (or even applicable) 'universally', wheras in reality they dont apply outside your own borders, let alone universally.
Grow up, and you can stick your 'first ammendment' up your arses.
Oh, and by the way, perhaps you'd like to explain your attitude towards global pollution control, too?
Which 'other continent' were you thinking of?
Im in England, I believe a part of Europe? you might have heard of the place, its where English originated, not the US. Im not an 'other continenter', as you put it.
Hmm. I dont know whet to make of this. Its great that courts finally recognise these (although as usual, I suspect this is a US only issue - people seem to forget the rest of the world exists)
On the other hand, I really DONT want these things to become more common - I dont want to have to download the damned things all the time (which is what will happen if 'joe user' decides to use the 'new' feature of microsoft mail-spammer 2003 - 'hmm - append huge secure signature to all posts (yes/yes?)'
Wouldnt it be cool for us to have our own 'junkyard war' ?
Perhaps we could design a challenge that everyone could have a go at, preferably something which has easy-to-verify results, and can be done over the internet.
perhaps see who can design the longest flying paper aeroplane - this can be verified by posting the design and allowing others to test it.
Any ideas? Winner gets a free... er. well, nothing, but hey:)
Isn't Slashdot international?
Perhaps it would be nice once in a while if we saw people discussing the implications of such politics (as mentioned above) for all of us, rather than canvassing(sp?) for people to support this, that or the other bill in the US?
I really think people are going over the top with encryption - we'll be encrypting water molecules as they enter our homes next!
I dont want to encrypt my entire HDD - data recovery is much harder, its slower, until the encryption is done in hardware, its unneccessarily complicated, something that is NOT a good idea in a filesystem, and offers no benefits over simply encrypting your sensitive data in an archive.
I guess there would be scope for an encrypted partition for/some/ people, but nearly no-one needs this (the government really doesnt CARE about most people at all). Certainly only idiots would encrypt their root filesystem.
Surely a far better solution would be for data to be flagged as 'cacheable' by nodes on the network, and nodes which feed large numbers of slow connections would hold (to an extent) data until its recipients have it? far more efficient than wasting time and effort duplicating a stream several times in order to feed those with a high bandwidth. of course, this isnt practical for small files, but then, thats not what the MBONE is for.
Who gives a fuck?
/really/ dont care if someone comes along and tries to hijack my wireless lan. what can they do? access the net? look at my porno collection?
I
do I REALLY care that someone MIGHT spy on my google searches?
Anything important will be encrypted by me, before it hits the 'wire'.
I dont see the problem.
I would suggest that alt.support.autism (I am there also) would be somewhere you should investigate.
:-)
certainly you can find out a LOT about ABA there.
(and, given the nerd / geek population, also about jet engines built from turbos, computers, etc.
pop over to alt.support.autism :-)
You might want to pop into the newsgroup alt.support.autism and say hi.

Why oh why are they not *OPEN SOURCEING* these distributed projects?
I call it what Acorn had about 14 years ago...

Burden of proof would be with M$.
Ditto. its the only game I ever bothered completing other than repton and twinworld on my Acorn. Spyro (and Spyro2) is a great game.

How annoying will THAT be?
> If we dont succeed we run the risk of failure
Whats this about? what a stupid comment. if you dont succeed, you FAIL. no maybe.
