After weatching and at time helping hime build a few nothing boxes (neon ring counters of a sort) crystal radios etc, I got interested in electronics, that ultimately led to computers which lead to S/W.
I guess to start hime off, try some simple games. HILO Hangman or Towers of Hanoi (for advanced stuff).
All of those can be non-graphical at first using any language such as Perl.
Be sure to explain a lot. At 7, a Nothing Box was just flashing lights until I was told the properties of the neon bulb and a capacitor. Simple explainations will work if the kid has a bent for these things.
I thought your post was a joke at first, but I see you're serious. I feel for your kids.
Computer maintenance is not programming. You may script some things here and write small c programs there, but for the most part, they are different tasks.
I've done both. I'm a programmer, not a computer operator.
Sure those skills are needed in the long run, and the kid wil probably learn them as time goes by, but why bore the kid to tears first?
You may want to look at the docs at perforce.com. They have a lot of good ideas on tracking and such.
I found the biggest trick for a CM system, is in integrating changes from one line to the next. CVS sucks at this. I don't know about SVN. Perforce does okay, has some wrinkles, but overall, it's not to bad.
Linux had a real good Youtube video at google on Git. Similar ideas, different tool and a different way to handle the branches.
For reference, when I'm speeking of branches, I mean, Bod and Sally are working on adding 'Feature A' to a system (some set of programs) while Fred and Jack are fixing various bugs. There would be two or three branches where the people work. Once the changes are made, they need to be integrated together. If you have strong communications (namely you like each other) merging the changes together can be down right easy or at least no to horrific depending on the overlap of the changes. In any case, this is where a good SCM tool shines.
All of the best satire comes from taking any point to it's ultimate conclusion.
I know they aren't expelled, they're just told to shut up and regurgitate what they're told. Teachers are told to just shut up and regurgitate the 'consensus' view.
Don't think about it, don't question it, accept it, it must be true, because the folks in the know say it is.
Have any of you noticed that I'm not arguing for ID yet, but the idea of critical thinking? If you can't discuss ID or other reasons for global warming than 'man did it', than you might as well tell me that there is no point in thinking anymore, leave that to the folks who get paid to do it. It's good to teach our kids to think about things, ponder them, see if things really add up, evolution, ID, global warming, water boils at 212 F, whatever.
It's sad when states have to make laws to allow teachers to teach our kids this.
Maybe, maybe not, but the law goes farther then that. it covers ANY science where there is dispute.
I still say it's good to teach folks to think about what they're being told, by anyone.
This keeps folks from being led to slaughter. Of course, the masses like to be led to slaughter. mankinds history is littered with the carcases of the masses once they were taught to believe in whatever the 'authorities' tell them scientific, religious or political.
My point is I'm a firm believer that teaching critical thinking is important. Do we all need to think the same way and believe the same way?
I guess I could never consider myself as smart as the 'scientists' (who ever they may be), hell I barely made it through high school. How the hell can I have the ability to listen to the facts presented to me and then decide what to think?
Please, tell me what to think! I feal so lost in my stupidity and ignorance!
but little Johnny is disrupting the class. He keeps arguing against current scientific thought. He knows his math and spelling. he seems to be real bright, but he keeps brining up arguments against global warming, evolution and a few other theories we need to indoctrinate the class with. If he can't tow the line and regurgitate what we teach him, we will have to expel him from classes. It is only politically correct for him to do this. Please help us in training him to think right, I mean left, I mean correctly.
Depends, if your just modifying a stand alone program and distributing it with your stuff, you can fix it. Be sure to send the author back the changes you made to it, and besure to mention in your documentation that it's GPL and the have the source code on hand if someone wants it.
If you want to make it your own and embed it deeply into your project using some here and some there tweeking all the way, live with the license and make your code GPL, otherwise write your own!
By the way, my explanation is a simplified laymen version. See your lawyer for sure.
The BSD folks want their code used by as wide of base as possible so they use the most liberal license. They don't mind folks making a buck off of their work to accomplish this.
GPL folks on the other hand, figure that being able to have the source is way more important than having a wider user footprint. If you're going to make a buck off their code (which is perfectly fine) it will cost you as much as it cost the author of the code in question.
Personally, I like the second option. By having the code free, when the entity maintaining my favorite manifestation of it, let say uh... Apple, goes belly up, then I can still move the code to my new platform, I can still use the years of data I've accumulated.
If the code is locked in Apple's vaults, I can't do that.
terrorist's butt would be what spelled the end of americans traveling by air.
This shows I haven't learned to think inside the box and realize that the DHS would devise a scheme equally effective and not need those pesky terrorists to do it!
I started with BASIC, then learned 6800/68000 assembly, then C then bourn shell, perl,, then C++.
My latest and the one I was dragged into kicking and screeming was Java. I think it's like the drink, I'll just piss my life away if I continue to consume it.
True, but all to many folks here in slashdot and the scientific community act like you are unthinking and stupid not to mention a a heretic if you question the scientific thinking of the day.
That's kind of funny you say where America leads, the UK will follow. When it comes to domestic spying and public surveillance I always considered that the US was only 5 to 10 years behind the UK.
Well, if they are theory they should be discussed. Of course, we have proven that the earth is a sphere. We have concluded that when we split or fuse atoms, they go bang (ask the Japanese, they will vouch for it).
As for the holocaust, maybe you should redirect the topic. We all know it happened, maybe the discussion should be whether slave labor is moral and human experimentation should be allowed.
It's really sad that those wanting us to break our chains of religious dogma won't even listen to their own words and allow folks the freedom to think and analyze. They want us all trapped in their scientific dogma where once a theory takes hold, scientist be damned, can't be questioned.
The poorly-informed board members. Maybe we should be voting in board members who are not clueless.
Then again, maybe we have and maybe there are some topics in which people don't believe science has the complete answers. Take global warming. I think that there is enough evidence to still support debate. Of course, watch your funding, without global warming, you may loose it.
I also like the quote "Without evolution, modern biology, including medicine and biotechnology, wouldn't make sense," How does removing evolution unravel our understanding of the mechanics of medicine or genetics. A chemical reaction is a chemical reaction. Gene splicing and genetic principles still work whether God created all of the living things in one fell swoop or if they spontaneously happened out of the primordial soup.

Wow... Talk about the old days, back in 2006 they didn't even have cameras.
Then you're suggesting that envelopes can't be used because you can't pick them up with a fork lift.

With a Wok that size, you can Wok the dog!
Maybe you'll be able to watch tv during rainstorms.

Being only 50 years ago, it was most likely caused by global warming!

My wife grows modus ponens in our flower garden.

Only until we die, that is when we will either get the real answer or the athiests were right all along.
In either case, I don't think we'll care so much.

I think L. Ron Hubbard would dis agree with you. He made an okay business out of selling his religion.
What sort of bullshit are you spreading? You can not be smart and productive in science and have a belief in God?
Sigh... it's folks with such limited thinking to believe bullshit like that which is sinking this country.
