I've heard of some horror stories from friends up in Canada. Since they've had cable for awhile, it's caught on and even normal 'average' users have cable.. Their main lines were shared and the modem speeds dropped big time. I believe they started putting caps on transfers.
I had the same problem at home with the CO never being updated. The problem is, the Telephone companies have no need to update it.. no one is really complaining.. Then there is no competition, but how can anyone compete in a billion dollar market? CO's aren't cheap to put up for a small start up and leasing (as we've seen with dsl providers dieing) really isn't a money maker. Most people are happy dialing up to AOL and just checking mail.
it would be nice to add another "Big Guy" to the picture. Maybe like a AOL-Time warner network of fibre put up.. Right now I wouldnt mind seeing fiber implemented even in my normal phone lines for better quality and once initial install is up, look to fiber as a broadband alternative.
> (BTW, when did fiber-to-the-door become one of my "rights"?)
I think you're thinking of the wrong right =) When poster said right I think they implied "Correct way of doing something" not regarding personal freedoms? Or am I not picking up on your sarcasm in some way?
Second of all, I see your point, but why not pick a direction, implement it well and go in that direction. No one can predict the future here, but right now, fiber's ability to grow beyond current transfer rates is there.. I agree with poster in that laying fiber in some areas would be a step in the right direction...
It would be nice if they were able to sort and read it all. I read someone's post up above and they mentioned that they have applications to do this already avaliable. But, still, 50,000 is a large sum and I'd hate to see the final costs of tryin to read/sort them all (even after the application got done with them). I mean, next week we would see another Story submitted along these lines, "Congressmen spend thousands for reading email". But we wouldn't understand just how much is involved and this isn't a major coporation we're talking about. But I wonder how much of the 50000 was spam that was completely useless. None the less I'd like to see some commitment put towards filtering, sorting and then reading the valuable emails (ignore outright flames, spam and useless forwarded blonde jokes).
I can't agree more with what you said, but I think the main shift is "I like that new Britney song and I want it and I don't much care how much it costs or how it's packaged to me". Mainstream America sells out faster than Metallica...
About that Fullhouse reference.. I don't understand it myself.. I was flipping one day and saw a rerun and wonder how the hell that show coulda lasted THAT long on National TV... Ah well, says alot for american society..
Welp Mr PurpleMonkeyDan... It's a WinCE device with the same stats as the Compaq (at that price range). There is also a casio avaliable around that price range... Second of all, you can't even find the Ipaq's anywhere... So, maybe I was wrong making the comparison in your eyes bud, but If it runs WinCE and it's similar, I'm OH SO sorry I even made the comparison.. gees, I won't even compare it to Palms even.. heaven forbid... Maybe you shouldn't be so crucial either... Or maybe I'll never make another comparison for fearing I'll run into an ass like you! I guess you never compared winnt with linux either.. WHATEVER..
WTF... I said I paid 600 for it and yes, it was the higher end HP journada (Spelling) one.. I know they have one for 750 dollars, but 600 for a PDA I think is slightly pricey. I used the WinCE media player and it was a dog. Did you have more memory? I don't know what you were trying to prove but All I stated was that the model I spent 600 on was slow. Maybe you spent more of your daddy's money to get the better model, but the one I has wasn't good at all... Next time, maybe you should say which one you bought and then make a GOOD comparision Mr "I have a better model than you and it works great" Miller...
HEY COWARD, thanks for the info... BIG HELP, instead of just making fun of me, maybe you'll realize that, I DID READ THE BOX.. you CAN NETWORK it with the cradle you dumbass.. maybe you should be less crucial and read a little closer.. I simply wanted an alternative and that alternative would cost 100+ dollars.. and a NICE PDA? the joke is on you now... for 600 dollars I think I'd get alot more than 64 megs and a glorified date application.. but if you think otherwise, then I think you're delusional. But then again you're just trolling.. hence the Anon Coward bit.. Get a life and get off Slashdot, sorry charlie.. hah
I bought a higher end Compaq Win CE device and it sucked... Slow and promised nothing important and costs close to 600 dollars. If you wanted a cool mp3 and contact book, forget it.. When I played one mp3 the thing came to a crawl. Space disappears so quickly, before I knew it, I was trying to dig up another 4 megs more for system memory.. Then I wanted to get it on the network without having to use the cradle and it's lame software.. but then you have to buy a Network card for it, which is another 100+ dollars. I guess I was expecting too much from it, but for that price I didnt think I was expecting the world... My answer? Buy a cheap celeron/amd notebook for 700-800 and you'll be much happier... but if you want one expensive date and calendar Win CE unit, this might be for you...
Good question, my only argument is that he's an adult and the High School student is a minor. I think the correct way to handle it is have a lawsuit against parents and student. But I mean, it would have been funny for the Principle to make fun of the student in a similar way (like bed wetting or something)...
I see why the Principle was mad.. obviously, but the way in which he handled it was questionable...
I can't agree with you more. I actually had a teacher honestly say to me that "I wish we could treat the kids like they do in cops and throw them around". This was a history teacher, he also appeared as an arm wrestler in the movie "over the top"... The funny part is that he's still teaching. And people wonder why kids have such an agreesive, anti-learning attitude.
Also, I believe teachers get PAID to deal with students? I have to deal with rude customers each and every day in my job. Am I sayin the students are OK for doing this? NO, but I am saying it's part of the job, but you seem to have the right understanding... I wish there were more "Good" teachers out there... unfortunately most of them out there are just looking forward to 10 year.
When I was in High school, I wish I coulda left... but bud, it's required by law that I go. I got A's and B's and missed as many days as I could, just so I wouldnt have to deal with teachers (and I was the quite type).
The "making fun of girlfiend" representation of this setup is stupid. and Yes, HIGH SCHOOL IS DIFFERENT. It's a publicly funded institution. But even then, the kid did everything OUTSIDE of school.. And lastly... Big difference with the female classmate.. first off, she would be under age (which, yes then that IS against the law) and second, the Principle is in the public eye. I'm not saying this to justify the kids actions, but its like comparing your Mother against a Public Official... Now if the kid was handing out offensive materials IN the school, then I believe the kid should have been punished within the school. So who's right and wrong here? The kid was wrong as well but I think the principle was also wrong in the way he handled the situation...
My employeer pays me and I *want* to be here to make money... big difference. And I supposed you never had a run in with someone in power.. I hate when my principle belittled me.. I'm not trying to defend this kid, but in my eyes everything is ok with authority until it hits you in the face.. IF my employeer did that to me, I'd leave the company, but as a student I'm forced to stay. The first ticket you get from a cop and maybe you'll realize this.. even if you were only going 5 miles over the limit... No, the principle didn't have right to kick the kid out, everything was outside of the school (handing flyers out IN school is a different case). If the site was that offensive in general, he should have sought a lawsuit outside of the High School.
And why is your opinion any better than slashdot's? They are a group of ppl with ideas and guess what, just like the kid at the high school, they have a right to share them. If you don't like it, move on...
I don't care too much about reliability, but speed would be an aweful concern for me.. if a disk goes back, just throw it out, but making a new one would be a pain at like 1meg/5mins... Just sitting there letting it crank along.. ugh.. It would be cool if somehow they could make it so 32 megs would go as fast as 1.44 megs to copy then I think this would have some promise.. and for 38 bucks (For drive) I'd buy one for linux... But I'm always asking for too much...
Heh, I'm thinking you read a little too deeply into this... I mean, I haven't watched TV in awhile either really.. I occasionally sit down flip through all the commericals and they get completely boring. I think the previous poster was just saying that Football and 'tech' issues don't usually go hand and hand... It wasn't like "I HATE FOOTBALL AND DUMB JOCKS AND TV IS EVEN STUPIDER" type post, then I think your post would have been acceptable. And I also believe that he wasn't "speaking for the masses" as you pointed out... Maybe you should take a step back and realize yourself the babble which you speak.. PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH. Stop telling people they can't voice their opinions.
I agree, but some game companies aren't open to porting.. I wish everyone was as good about it as id games but ppl like verant/sony are dead set against it... maybe if people would complain more rather than try to make it run under wine (not saying this is a good thing). Loki has the problem in that if the game company gave the "ok" then it's usually ok as well for wine, but for games like everquest, wine may be our only hope.. unless we speak up (might be like pissing in the wind tho)... And even then, Verant might complain about it running under linux/wine.. who knows with them... they keep the tightest leash..
I understand your comment and agree, this should be looked at for the mere technical side. But at the same time, it is mostly just "about movies". The sad part is that, even though I own the movie, or have the 'right' to watch it, but don't actually 'own' it, I'm not able to make backups nor transfer it into a different form. Yes, I make mp3's of my music cds, and it's not for trade, but simply ease of use (no swapping music cds, no skipping etc..) So why not just boycott them and not listen to anything you ask? I shouldn't support their stuff? Well, I'd sure like to, but I actually don't perfer living in a cave for 10 years until they realize they should stop. I mean, alot of people ask about alternatives, but I really haven't found any. I could buy vhs, but the quality really is second at best. I guess what I'm getting at is, the technology is good, why not take full advantage of it and for the people who abuse it, make them pay...
ok, fine.. what do we do then? Stand outside and petition their offices? Sorry, I gotta work to afford all those great new cds. Sorry if I seem harsh but I think these companies have been running the show for awhile now and have it embedded in their heads that they are always right.. This napster thing got their panties in a bunch and their didn't have their fingers in it, which I think was a good thing.. that they woke up to see what's going on.
fine, then let's take away your guns (or everyone elses) and let the government walk all over us.. or other countries for that fact.. since guns kill people. Oh, and take away music in general, because some of it is obviously "bad" and replace it with "good" music. When some rapper makes a racial slur about his own people.. Those are evil as well. Why not stop driving your car now, because walking is *much* safer? I dont think anyone is out to hurt the artists here. Hell, courtney love actually sued her own record company because they were sueing napster and she wasn't getting her cut. But the current way to distribute cds isn't working, OBVIOUSLY (otherwise, why is mp3 so popular?) I wouldn't want people to steal my music.. but at the same time, what are my other options to getting my hands on music? I know it's not a right to own it (if I can't afford it then I should just not buy it). So, next time you buy a cd, think of me and my poor family sitting around watching a black and white tv listening to records from 1945 (when I could afford them). Otherwise, don't tell me how to live. And if they made a new car that was soo much safer, would you want all those beautiful 60's and 70's classics destroyed? My friend, judging by your slashdot login, I think you have alot of growing up to do, even if you are older... age doesn't imply maturity.
I cant agree more... I still think there should be a limited number of machines or just one or 2 dedicated labs. I would have liked to take like 1 week even to learn graphic based calculus to see some graphs in 3D. Or, heck, I'm in the IT field.. some higher level IT classes would have been a plus. I guess what I'm getting at is that computers are still needed, but not in every classroom. History could even take a week and do some neat classes (just to beat the duldrum)... But I do somewhat disagree. I think the author could have been a little more open.. Just cause he went through a somewhat boring educational system doesn't mean future generations will.
Face it, they are going to install this thing or a variant of it somewhere and whether you know about it or not is of no concern to them. The government is there and is always there, even when you're sleeping. Call it crazy or nonsense, but I think it's true.. sometimes they know things about you before you do. You don't want to be monitored? then shut off the TV, hang up the phone and move to a shut off island, because even if you waste your *precious vote* the government is going to do what it wants, when it wants and it's not going to ask you. Hell, you even get monitored on services you pay for... They know who's watching what, 'they' know what you're talking about. Sure, we pay the bills for our senators, but do *you really think they care*? They get paid either way.. its not like you can stop paying taxes because you don't like the service you're getting...
In the end you have as much say in your own life as a 3 year old child.. the government tells you what else to do (or your damn job for that fact).
welp, I know the irc admins have a job to do... and they usually do too good of a job. The Power-tripping admins kill/kline usually without much regret and it was worse back in the day. I ran a server on newnet for awhile (irc.cybertrails.com) and found out that alot of their main servers were being attacked and mostly because their admins were being asses. my server (irc.cybertrails.com) wasn't once attacked by any syn/icmp attacked...
