  1. Complete HOWTO on Using the Ruby Dev-Tools plug-in for Eclipse · · Score: 0, Redundant

There's a complete setup guide over at http://www.napcs.com/howto/railsonwindows.html

Steps through the RDT plugin, as well as many other extras, like connecting to a Database with Eclipse, running WEBrick, etc...

    Good stuff...

  2. No GPS, just Google Earth! on All About Geocaching? · · Score: 1

You may be surprised, but I have found most of my recent geocaches without any GPS whatsoever. Just put the coords into Google Earth, and usually you can pick out something unique about it from the sky. It's a different approach, and keeps you from looking down during the hunt.

Scalable pages. Yes, I know you can't increase the font size by holding down control, but the frames and images stay put, so you end up with 2 big words on each line.

Opera scales the whole page, just by hitting the + key. It's great for sitting back and reading a nice long article.

As soon as they fix this, I'll switch!

Just another one to throw into the fray, but MapsOnUs (the backend site to Maps.com) has one feature that's invaluable to me -- it displays the lat/lon for every intersection along a route. For GPS tinkerers, it makes it nice to know the lat/lon of a place you've never been too, and with a few utilitys on the internet, you can even make it into a route for the crudest of GPS's.

I haven't found another that had the lat/lon easily displayable.

  6. Flagrant Misquote. Verify your sources. on Supreme Court Will Hear Pledge of Allegiance Case · · Score: 3, Informative

Quoting the words of others carries a big responsibility. Misquoting misrepresents the ideas of others. Here's a classic example of a misquote:

John Adams has often been quoted as having said: "This would be the best of all possible worlds if there were no religion in it."

John Adams did, in fact, write the above words. But if you see those words in context, the meaning changes entirely. Here's the rest of the quotation:

Twenty times, in the course of my late reading, have I been on the point of breaking out, 'this would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!!!!' But in this exclamation, I should have been as fanatical as Bryant or Cleverly. Without religion, this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in public company-I mean hell.

As you can see from this example, context matters!

In the FAA air traffic simulator where I work, we have recently done studies preparing for what would happen if the GPS satellites were disabled (on purpose or jammed from a terrorist). NATCA (the controllers union) has developed procedures for what to do when this happens. Most aircraft would fall back to their backup navigation systems, assuming such systems would work on the route they were currently on. Less than 2% would even need attention, and it would be minor intrusion at that -- just enough to get then to where they can fly on their own. Even in the future, when some of the current systems are removed, it won't be much more of a problem.

So you can feel just as safe flying as you currently do ;)

Actually, there are two people (that I know of) that are going after Col Kittinger's record. Cheryl Stearns and Rodd Millner are both involved in independant efforts to break this record in the near future. As they prepare with modern technology, the wonder of Kittinger's jump almost a half-century ago seems even more incredible.

When the CodeRed worm came out, a general challenge was issued to the world of geekdom to write a worm similar to the one the you suggested. One other thing that it added was that the worm could listen on the port and then only propegate itself to others trying to exploit the hole. That way it wouldn't "cure" other computers unless they "asked" for it.

However, alas, it looks like nothing materialized of it. It was a fun idea to chew on, though. Who knows -- maybe Slashdot can turn out some better attempts.

Of course this is not original, but I've never even heard it addressed. Usually this is touted as the "final blow" by anti-evolutionists and often is mentioned in passing, but are there any thoughts about this (somewhat crucial) element of the Big Bang? It's not mentioned in the [admittiedly limited] literature that I've read but I'm sure there has to be some guesses in the scientific community about where it came from and how it got to be infinitely dense, etc.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

I have an MPTrip too, and it does what it says. It plays mp3's, it plays them loud, and it's pretty friendly with how they're burned on the CD. However, there were a few things that I wish I had known before getting one. 1) It's almost impossible to figure out which song is where. Pick a number between 1 and 150. 2) The music doesn't skip, unless you bump it during the first 4 seconds of the song. So if you're in a bumpy car, you have to cradle it after each break. 3) The instructions look like they were translated on babelfish and the look and feel of the buttons is pretty cheezy. (i.e. It has a "Next" and a "Preview" button -- not Previous.) However, it play's mp3's by the bushel, and they sound good. What do you expect for $100? Just F.Y.I.
