    I'll do my best to stay on topic here. I got some games for myself because none of my friend use linux and I'm not going to force them so I came up with something new. How about giving Linux, not force them but having that little box beside there computer would make them what to try it. Or the what about the joy of showing people what you use. What with some Dragon Linux, WinLinux 2000 or even DemoLinux making it so they can look at it then uninstall it. I want to do stuff like this so the next year I could buy them Linux games. =)

    As for me I paid for Sim City 3000 and Myth II. Myth II was at a 75% discount(that was cut down to $10!)... Linux and some free games are the only thing I'm going to get my friends for X-mas because...They are both free and I like giving this time of the year. Besides people already think you are crazy for using Linux. So giving them a copy of it is not going to make you any diffirent right? =/

    What's the point of flaming? You get no where with it, I see that you gave up on Linux. It's funny because I use Mandrake 7.2 and I am not having a hard time at all. Everything I see is in a GUI and updating is simple as 1,2,3.I guess that's just you on the other hand... =) Have fun and enjoy your stay in MS Windows.

    P.S: Man you just don't know what you are missing. If you Like Windows then use it, just don't tell people what's going to happen when it comes to Linux...

    If really want a nonMicrosoft home desktop solution for the masses..support BeOS.

    Support BeOS 5.0 huh? Right now BeOS don't have that many companies(like Linux) backing it up helping it get on Desktop. Another thing Linux is free. Now BeOS 5.0 you can download it from there website but then again you can only use up to 500MB on your hardrive or you could pay $50 for the full version. Hell Linux is in 2nd place...Why not go for 1st... =)

    Is your new Playstation2 going to be hooked up to your old black & white RCA?

    No, but at the same time you can't upgrade your old black & white TV you'll just have to get a new one. X11 will get better, yeah you will see a 5.0 later on down the line. Oh and people are not just working on X11 just for Linux, there are other OSs that use it too.

    If you don't want Linux to make it to the desktop? Tell that to IBM, Dell, KDE, Gnome and all the developers making software for Linux. Besides when I go to the store to buy my next PC, I don't want this Microsoft OEM restore disk junk they got going on. I seen to of my friends fall for that...I'm not going to be the next one.

    There is a guy at work that flame me about Linux not to long about(VB programmer go figure). Anti-Aliased was one of the things he will comment about, right along with easy to install, printing and scanning images. I'm not going to say his name he could post Anonymously. I just ask him what did he think of Linux and he when off. I figure it was okay to ask him about Linux because he had a Unix backgroud. When I install Mandrake 7.2 I found out everything he said was false, so I kept going do my everyday Linux thing. I want him to read this post right along with this topic...

    Hey Mr. VB programmer if you are reading this and you have heard some of the good news about Linux slashdot and the flames that M$ been getting...Now is the time to give Linux another shot. You said you like programming as a hobby well we do it all the time... At the same time we can see how good you code. It's all programming just the syntax is a little diffirent. Post the same thing you said to me when you first got to the company and let the people of /. flame away.

    I'm not put down M$ in any way, I just want people to stop cutting down Linux if you have trying any of the new stuff that's out. I see people cut down Linux when they used RedHat 5.2 and couldn't get X11 to work. Or back when USB support was still lacking back in the days. If you don't want to use Linux then don't, keep using Windows...Just don't come up to me and ask me why I use it...Thank you.

    It's more standards in the way we do things. Installing RPMs can be a pain sometimes but with people taking steps like this I think it's great. APT is going to make it easier for people to install and update now there distributions of Linux now. Isn't that great!? I would like to go to an site and just download something install it without picking what distributions and version I'm using or use an update program to get the next version of GIMP. If APT is something I see in the next Mandrake,Redhat or any distro I'll be happy, because long as someone is taking that step. If you ask me, I'm up for a change... I don't care if RedHat drop RPMs and started using DEBs with APT. Long as it help get Linux on more Desktop and help get more apps.

    No, a website telling Windows users about Linux and how could they get there hands on it. I figure if someone is going to try Linux it needs to be easy for some...or most..If not all! Putting them into a beat-up RedHat is not an nice thing to do. I would like to use RedHat again myself one day, it's not going to be 7.0 I can tell you that much. I'm looking forward to 7.1 and not v3.14159265 the "crackpot" distribution...

    What you fail to understand that some people would pay to use FrameMaker in Linux. Your thinking that every Linux user want free software? Free is nice yeah but it's nice to have the support sometimes. I pay for Loki games and I pay for Box versions of Linux due to the fact that them are the only things I need. It's harder to get a burn copy of Quake 3 for Linux then it is for Windows. =) Some people keep there Windows boot because they have to use something that was in Windows that companies don't want to port over to Linux. How do I know this? Because I'm one of them myself. Why is there an Win4Lin? Why is there an VMware? You figure it out, then post when you got the anwser.

    Would I run M$ Office if it was out for Linux? Well if I ran an business that is working with other companies we will need to have something like that for Linux. I hate booting into Windows, but I don't want to use WINE when I'm trying to do something for my company at home. If the programs I need was in Linux I wouldn't be booting into Windows and the samething goes for most of the people that I know.

    You know what? People like you make me sick. I would pay money to get the apps I need for Linux so I don't have to boot into Windows. So feel free to flame! I could care less... I'm just speaking my mind that's all.

    After hearing all this stuff about RedHat 7.0 I started downloading Mandrake 7.2. For the project I have going on now, I want users to be able to try Linux and not have a hard time. I don't like to hack/fix things that's why I jump to Mandrake. RedHat is an great company but it's not going to hurt when they push out RedHat 7.1. Then I'll look into getting it, besides Linux is free! I'll just download it from there FTP site just like I am doing with Mandrake 7.2 now or order the CDs for $2 +S&H.

    Hmmm, I have Mandrake 7©1 and it's easy to use© If you want something easy to use© I would download/buy that© I understand where you are coming from and I feel your pain© Not knowing how to setup my Geforce 2 card that is and I had to look around© I got it setup and the games run like a dream, but I don't want it to be that hard© This is not the place to post something like that© You could go to GNU/Linux people and say something like this© Maybe that could help©©©

    but not to all©©© I'm using Windows 2K now and it haven't crash on me and I haven't had any lockups© Now let's take a look at my computer and you'll know why©

    P2-400Mhz
    224MB of Ram
    Geforce 2
    10 GB hardrive 5 for Windows 2K and 5 for backup©

    All my hardware Windows 2k found normally© One thing I will have to say that Windows 2K is a Workstation as in for work! Yeah Windows 2K as for the rest of MS oprating systems will run great now that they patch it up and they are not using 16-bit code© That's the thing tho, by them dropping the 16-bit code makes it so I can't run some programs I would like to run in Windows 95/98/ME and at the sametime I can't run most of the games/programs I want in Windows 2K©

    Then again I'm using this for work¥cool project some slashdot folks would like but it will come a time when I will have jump back into Linux to finish this© I know for a fact that a home user don't want to pay over $200 for a clean damn oprating system and at the sametime can't run all there old programs and hardware doesn't match up© That's why most haven't switched at work© If you get Windows 2K like one of my friends you could end up going out and buying new hardware to meet Windows 2K standards© What!?!? Going out and buying new hardware Starbuck!?!? Yeah, and people was thinking Linux was bad© Most of the people at work can't switch because of the projects they are working on and the same thing goes for Office 2k© If you ask me Windows 2K is a great OS and I don't want to down grade myself to Windows ME anyday© I don't want to lose data that's the main thing with it comes to the project that I'm doing now©

    I hate to say it I still use Windows for some of the programs they have that are hard to find in Linux and for beta testing projects from work© I figure if I'm going to do it, why not do it in one that don't crash for a change© I still see my friends crash and lockup in Windows ME and with the new Whispers or what every MS is putting out will make it hard on most companies/users when it comes to upgrading and because with that they drop the 16-bit code©©© I don't know what else but it ain't good©

    Hey I couldn't log-in to my second/junk mail account! The funny thing is that I start up IE and it works! If anyone that is using NS 6 can't log-in to there hotmail account plz post. I'm using Windows 2K now but this moring at work I log-in with Windows NT just fine.

    I install it at work on Windows NT but I took it off because of IE and Netscape was fighting over who wanted to load up what so I took it off. That and my profile that I upload to the network got to big and I couldn't change where to put the files. I have install here at home on Windows 2K and I do like it. It could be because I have a lot of ram(224MB) or it could be that I like that fact that Netscape is more into Java and not VB/ ActiveX controls. I was a big fan of Netscape back in the days and I hate how IE took me by storm. Why? Because it started coming with Windows and after a while downloading Netscape on a 56k was pointless when you have IE 5.0 on your computer.

    The pages load up fast(for me anyways) and I do like that fact that it do have skins. I say compare to the new MSN browser I like NS 6 better. I feel that I could be one of them people that report bugs and stuff. So I will set back and surf the web with it, besides I miss Netscape. Long as it can load Java and Flash then I'm okay. If a web site that I want to go to real bad doesn't come up right then I'll just start up IE.

    As for my Linux boot I will still install NS 6, but like I said I still will start up something diffirent if or when a web page doesn't come up right. I figure that AOL/Netscape is trying, I'm not going to down them or flame them for that. Some people just go on how much they hate it, but it's one thing I always say. If you don't like it then don't use it. If you like it in someway and you want to help then get active and see what you can do. Don't just flame them, hell if you go to Help>Feekback Center... I'm just thinkin' but they will listen.

    That's all I have to say now... Just speaking my mind...I am open up to be flamed.

    I say we are getting something. I don't care if it's free, nor I don't care it's close source but we have to stop wanting free open source stuff order to be able to get more of what we want. No I don't want to start paying for everything I get under Linux, but I just want to be able to have more companies and more software make it to this platform. With more apps comes games with more games come more users. We will still have open source apps and so on.

    I want Linux to not just to be for the programs/nerds but I also want it to be for normal every day people as well. It hurts to see my friend computer with Windows ME crash but he don't know no better, rebooting or hitting the power button is normal to him. Hell for a nice Windows OS(Windows 2K) that don't crash alot cost over $200. I will be one of those people that will pay for some software to make the community better then what it is. I will pay for games and apps if that's what it takes to get companies to start developing for this platform. That's all I have to say, yes I'm open up to be flamed now. So go right ahead... I just said what was on my mind that's all.

    Ha ha ha!!! Some people go to school to program because they want to make money in that field. Most of them that study and programmed at home do it because it's just plain fun. Having to take my time I learn alot. Put it this way the company that I code for now, it's programming but no feeling go into that code. It's done how they want it, none of my ideas at all, just plain and simple. When I do something at home it's diffirent I can take my time, no deadlines, no people bitchin' saying "This doesn't work! Or you didn't add this!"... Being a programmer at the age of 19 I know that shit suck for a fact. I wouldn't pay $20 to listen to your ass! Because I gave up weekends to program something I didn't care about! But it had to be done, I couldn't even go out to the movies or nothing...

    DemoLinux? Kinda like the BeOS 4.5 demo I saw at work. It was cool booting an OS off a CD like that. I would like to some more info in this so called DemoLinux if you would send me a URL at efeiling@tampabay.rr.com with some info I would love to look into it.

    Well I started off doing Q-Basic at the age of 13 on a Apple IIe in Middle school. My mom got me a 386 and I had MS-DOS I still did Q-Basic, but after a while I started doing C. I didn't think about a good GUI I just wanted to program. Today I'm 19 now using Authorware 5, Director 8, and Flash 5 at work. I figure I learned stuff like that pretty damn fast because I learn the back end(if-else,while and etc.) stuff before I learn all this crazy VB junk that people use today. Yeah I worked with VB for 3 months and it is a great and easy to use program.

    It's just not fun see the same E-mail client, Start Menu and the same Media Player and the same Windows OS but just with something slapped at the end like Windows 9x, Windows NT, Windows 2K and Windows ME. When I was little I didn't of anything else besides MS. I used MS-DOS(I love them days!) Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT and Windows 2K. I didn't know or learn of Linux into a year ago, now I have RedHat 7.0 right Beside my Windows 2K boot. I use Windows 2K if I have to take work home or Beta test something for the company(and it doesn't crash). I love using Linux and into this day it's been my Favorite OS. I think it suck that I was blind for all them years without knowing about Linux or any *nix. Being able to program for a OS that people use not because they don't want to use MS stuff but for the fact that they can program for free have thousands of users look over there code and continue building on to it if you don't feel like working on it no more. The Linux community is a loving community at heart. When ever I was installing something new or having a hard time with something they were their.

    I figure people must know what they are using and there is something better. Oh and GUI it's not hard to use, I figure if someone start from the ground on up just using something like KDE or Gnome that they wouldn't have a hard time and they would have some cool themes to go along with it. I heard from some people that they are sick of M$ and they wish that they could use something diffirent. They just can't because most of their Apps are MS only and they don't have the money for a Mac.

    P.S: You will always have the people that care about M$, them iMacs lovers and them die hard Linux programmers. So why fight on /.? Because it's fun!!! =)
