There is no difference between machine written story and human written one.
Machine: With well-defined rules for grammar, little logic, use a large database, or even copy some sentences from the web, Resuled with a story with no mistake in grammer.
Human: With well-defined rules for grammar, little logic, use a brain, or even directly cut-and-paste some sentences from the web (from not well-known sites), Resuled with a story with no mistake in grammer.
Maybe, the stories for slashdot already written by computer.
The impact of Compaq decision is not on MS or any UNIX vender. It should be Intel.
No one know can this not yet produced chip can success or not. It's a big move for current x86 platform to Merced. If UNIX vender want to give up Merced, I'm sure that Windows NT have more difficulty, migirate to 64 bit need completely rewrite. So Intel should wake up in the dream of server market..
You don't like OS/2, or give it up, that's your way. If IBM open-source it, those who love OS/2 can make it alive! OS/2 is a completely different to Linux.
Open-source is not a rocket to a software, just to keep the software not dying. Tons of projects is running well without a lot of attention from public.
IBM, can you hear me? If you want to give up something, replace it with a "recycle bin", why don't you donate it to someone who care and love it?
Except the title, "Even better than Linux", that article only use the word Linux, to "describe" a operation system which are not amiliar to the public. No negative description are added to both OS.
Comparing with comments in slashdot about BSD in the previous months, the "vs" in the title should be removed.
Sun care the PC and end-user market, that's why it sell the x86 Solaris at zero price, it bought the StarOffice, remeber, StarOffice is a "end-user level" product for PC!
Then what's the current players in the PC Market? MS, then Linux.
Linux don't require 64 processors with 16 gigs of ram in the commerical enviroment. Only the slow OS like Windows NT need that!
Only 2 winners in the console maket. Not Microsoft
on
Microsoft Game Console

Read the history first.
Back to the Sega vs Nintendo days, more than one nippon competitors try to enter the console market. None of them success. The only exception is Sony. After that, sega can't make any more profit. The market tells us, not more than 2 platforms is allowed in the console market.
When you install a MS Office 97, you won't install Lotus SmartSuite at the same machine. It's completely different to the game market. Customers want a lot of games, and differenet type games, not a SINGLE company can provide that. A game platform success or not, "depends on number of developers".
Back to days before playstation released. The game developers feel sick of the license, and certain unfair control from nintendo, so they voted Playstation, that's why the Sony rules! Console game developers aren't stupid, if they can survive in the current game console, why should they leave, and go to the Microsoft? The brand of Microsoft may attract certain mindless PC users, but how can Microsoft attract the game developers?
I also grew up in BBS age. A quite successful "fidonet clone" network was running by my friends and me in my city. We have 400 to 800 nodes, even more members than the local fidonet net. It's running well, until a very very annoying guy appeared. All moderators had no method to handle, we even called the police.
At last, we have a meeting. Action was: Write a filter software for the BBS hubs to block his user name. Result: it doesn't work. The annoying guy register with different name in different bbs!
Another action tried to take: Ban those member bbs which are "too easy to be registered". (Sounds like the banning of the IP and whole subnet of internet.) Result: it doesn't work. "Good users" claims that they are affected because they are disconnected too, and they like the bbs they were using. They prefer to "r/w in another network, rather than move to another bbs". (Similar to the dial-up users and NAT problems discussed).
At last, quality always win.. Most people just ignore those annoying messages, and flood with the good messages. That annoying guy have no patient in long-term.
Put in the boot floppy or cdrom maybe a difficult task for certain Win9x users, because they have to change the bios setting to boot from A: or CDROM. From their experience, they have to put the CD into the drive, and windows will autoplay it.
GUI or not is not important.
What really make newbies run away: they have to answer certain question they don't understand, such as domain name and correct IP address. The book inside the SuSE package is a good starting point. But, any users read manual before install?
Once I wrote a project involved with GA, (the goal of the project is something else, not GA). But one of guy who mark the scores know nothing about GA. It's too difficult for me to explain to him, why GA works. So I simply erased the word "genetic" in all papers.

It should be the first 16 bit, multi-tasking OS for x86 platform.

When tons of country already force people to bring cards to prove their identity, everything is not a big deal.
The only drawback - it's not beautiful!
People just don't like tatoo, not the barcode.
General public would accept the microchip under the skin more than a tatoo.

You are right. The objective of people in Slashdot is not for "friendship", we just want some news, "News for nerds".
If I want more friends, I would rather choose other community, e.g. a community with more female users.
For someone who have a lot of friends, a great social life, they are no long a geek. I really don't understand why BBC ask for that.
No Encryption works forever, so what's the point for a encryption in the physical-layer?

My 2 cents too..

Until I read that articles, I nearly forget there is a unix called SCO...
Who want to install SCO Unix in a new machine? Please raise up your hand.

if i operate a company out-side u.s., but major customers are americans, e.g. sell music on-line .. what can the government do?
Any other government in the world having the similar tax?
Do you really know what's RAD?
you quoted Windows 95, OS/2 and NT, and you thought they were written with RAD.... who says
GUI are written by RAD?
remember one thing: microsoft don't use delphi to write MS office.
Some code won't work. I find delphi bulid-in function is not enough, sometimes have to call win32 libraries directly.
Not your business. But SuSE have same level of
Chinese character support as RH.
