    You're right, but for different reasons. According to the article, state employees must first get "written permission from their agency heads" and then they can access their sexually explicit material. FUD is bad, but apparently a lot of people think it's fun too.

    If they are using 802.11b, as some posters have indicated, the benefits of it being wireless are pretty obvious: You don't have to run ethernet plugs everywhere, you don't have to worry about how many ethernet plugs to run, you can move from table to table, or even sit at the tables right outside (provided, of course, that these tables exist), etc...

    kiloBITS vs. kiloBYTES..

    I think it's BITS, and here's why: First, typically when you are talking about network traffic you refer to kiloBITS. Second, a lowercase 'b' typically refers to bits while an uppercase 'B' typically refers to bytes. (modem speeds are measured in kbps while your hard drives are measured in GB)

    40 vs 60 bit WEP:

    40 bit WEP uses 40 bits of secret key and 24 bits of shared key. Although it is really 64 bits of encryption, it has traditionally been called 40 bit WEP to get around the old encryption export restriction. 128 bit WEP uses 104 bits of secret key and 24 bits of shared key.

    Although I do agree with you, from what I understand, the electric companies and some technical companies have signed contracts stating that the technical company will be willing to cut their electricy consumption in emergencies (like this one) in exchange for lower rates. Betty and Goober didn't sign such a contract.

    The key word there is elements. Take, for instance, the phone number 703.555.1212 If you see it as 10 elements (7,0,3,5,5,5,1,2,1,2) it will be harder to remember than if you see it as four elements (703,555,12,12).

    The other thing to think about is this: How often do you ask for someone's phone number and try to memorize it there on the spot without writing it down? I would guess this happens very seldomly. Usually the sought-after phone number would be written down, either in a PDA, on a piece of paper, or on the back of one's hand. The arguements against expanding to 10 digit dialing are weak at best.

    once they start to license out the technology dont you think that all the independent test would prove it was truly unbreakable or not.

    That doesn't matter. Trying to remove the watermark is illegal. Heck, even _thinking_ about trying to remove the watermark is probably illegal. Do you want to face SDMI in court just because you "tested" the watermark?

    You have a point. Anyone else ever try making a backup copy of the Age of Empires II CD using a Windows machine? I was trying to help my brother-in-law do this. The burner software saw the disk as having two tracks. One very small, one very big. The software couldn't read the larger track, and therefore couldn't copy the disk. I never did try making a backup copy under any other configurations(OS, software, hardware), but if I found a way to make a backup copy of the disk, I would be circumventing the access control mechanisms, and therefore violating the DMCA.

    Actually that is my big fear. Not because I'm a conspiracy theorist, but because I've read documents that describe the subscription model as the future of software distribution for Microsoft. I can't find a link to the article, but from what I remember, it was written by a Microsoft employee and it described some of the changes Microsoft was making. The primary reason for switching to this model was to stabilize the revenue stream. (Stabilize at a very high level, that is.) The supposed benefits to the customer were included almost as a sidenote. Like "Oh yeah, uh ... it'll be good for the customers b/c they'll always have the latest version." It's scary, but I bet Microsoft will move to the subscription-only model soon.

    Actually the contest has a lot of meaning. Having the contest means that they can claim the SMDI technologies are "un-hackable." It means they can claim that the "S" in SDMI stands for "secure" rather than "stupid" or (insert your favorite swear word that starts with an S here).

    It means that we will see SDMI devices in the stores sometime soon. It means "fair use" will no longer apply.

    The judge can decide whether or not to hold a re-vote in palm beach. It is believed that if a re-vote is allowed, Gore will get 10000 votes in palm beach florida giving him the state and their 25 electoral votes and ultimately the presidency. If a re-vote is not allowed, it looks like Bush will win florida's 25 electoral votes and the presidency. And all this rests in the hands of a judge in florida who is looking to make a name for himself.

    No, no, no. You're confused. We are the very ICON of "litigation to solve every problem." If you're unhappy about anything, that means you are a victim and should sue the pants off the person who wronged you. Take for example the people who were "confused" by the ballots in Florida. They are suing to get to vote again. Most people would be too embarassed to say that they couldn't figure out how to follow an arrow, but these people insist that their right to vote was taken away.

    Heck, even the next President of the United States could be determined by a judge in a courtroom. Does anybody else see anything wrong here?!

    I apologize for the rant, but it's at times like these that I am embarassed to say I am an American.

    Interesting choice of words. I would like to point out that both a well-tailored suit and a pair of cement shoes are both "custom fit." I would also like to point out that both fancy doo-dads and bear traps are types of "trappings."
