if I encrypted my mp3s via rot-13 filename methods, shared them all, and got sued by the RIAA with an unencrypted list of files (that's all they check, they don't listen to the songs), would their court case hold any water? Besides not *REALLY* knowing if the files are indeed the songs in question, couldn't I counter-sue under the DMCA for reverse-engineering my encryption technique?
just like most other legal documents and identification, this will probably become nothing more than a race between the authorities and the forgers. much like fake IDs in the US among young people. Every time the government comes out with a more secure form of ID, forgers find new ways to make passable copies...
After a few paragraphs of the article, I started to remember that the tool is only as good as the user. Complaining that if you type in "flower" you get mostly online florists and little flower information? That's because, simply, there are MORE ONLINE FLORISTS than anything else so that's what you'll find. If you want to do "research on flowers" like the article says, for goodness' sake be more specific in your search! Use more terms! Used an advanced search! Use the google categories, which sort the best-ranked sites under categories! The search engine will search the web, but statistically a generic search will return different kinds of sites (ecommerce, etc.) based on the proportion of those sites in the search engine's database. Google's page rank alleviates that problem by ranking sites, if they are e-commerce or otherwise, that are better than the others. If most people search for and click to on-line flower vendors after searching for "flowers", then pagerank is doing its job by increasing the ranking of those sites and serving the majority of the users!
Basically, minorities get the shaft when searching, so you have to be more creative and/or use an advanced search. Google can't satisfy everyone; it satisfies the majority though. Bottom line: It's still better than anything else for 99% of people's searches.
I don't care what others may say; this is probably the most significant victory for open source to date. I think that Microsoft opening its code to modification and redistribution is unparalleled compared to previous inroads made by open source. True open source evangelists would probably say that although the impact this may make is small, what it says is certainly not; Microsoft has budged in its previously-unyielding attitude toward closed intellectual property.
The dual Xeon 2.4Ghz you speak of, what are its other features? Firewire? USB2? Serial ATA? What video card? Apple sells a package, so you can't really compare it to that server setup.
They compared it to a Dell Xeon workstation which I agree with; it had the other peripherals and graphics power that someone doing rendering or other apps may need. For server uses and clustering, it would probably make sense for research orgs and renderfarm owners to wait for XServes, which will hopefully cost less than the desktop G5s.

I didn't really follow all of your post... but I think Apple could sell alot of 15" powerbooks to college students--most college students go for notebooks today (at least where I'm headed), and I would spring for one of these if I could.
Did anyone check the not found page??? All I could think of was "oy vey."
If you're having problems with a broken link, send us your e-mail and we'll find the page for you. If the page is on the Linux Documentation Project site (http://www.sco.com/LDP/), email feedback@linuxdocs.org.
Ironically, they also say that they can't compete with Apple, because Apple has better access to the underlying operating system.
When I read that I just got so incredibly mad I started blurting out expletives! No lie! I can't believe the hypocrisy they are showing. Well can't talk now I'm still busy cursing...
Watch the Matrix reloaded. There is a big brother watching, and you will see how those that "escape" from the matrix are completely within the bounds of the matrix's creators' expectations. And I'm sure revolutions will throw us some other twist, perhaps that the "real world" is another matrix, and so on and so on.
I can picture it now... some girl rubs herself up on me at a bar, but little do I know she's actually buying herself a drink on me through my pants! Talk about beating the system!

Dude, where's my marijuana? Dude, why did I get arrested?
for those who don't know what i'm talking about
i think the press release and motherboard settings remind me of this...

What exactly is Frankel's role at AOL? It isn't very clear to me how Winamp, Gnutella, etc. are valuable assets to AOL. Can anyone answer?

well if they can sue linus for that, then I think by their logic I'd be justified in counter-sueing SCO for simply being fuckin annoying!
