    The locust doesnt power anything. He is just monitored, and when he beats his wings, he can steer the car, so it would seem as if he was flying normally to him.

    Does anyone wonder if this could be adapted to humans, maybe make a 'magic' mouse that you just have to move your hands around to use? Or an amazing easy to drive car? It is really interesting though...

    hardware dvd decoders have existed for a long time now... I dont know about power usage, but I guess its less than a CPU cranking at full speed.

    More on topic, the laptop in the article shouldnt even be considered a laptop, its wayyy too small. Some people really love small electronics, but I would rather have a 1 inch thick by 8 inches wide by around the length of a normal desktop keyboard. With a nice 15" screen and all. But if these things get cheaper I can see lots of people(including me) buying them as a replacement for PDAs...

    yes, I am forced to do the same thing. I have an efficient networks USB DSL modem, that of course has no drivers for Linux or BeOS, so i threw up a little cheapo celery box with win 98 SE and I use the ICS as a routerish service. BTW, that win 98 box has been up for 3 months, and it sees quite a bit of traffic...(avg >10 GB a month) and the occasional deathmatch... Of course i'll get rid of it as soon as I get rid of this shitty modem, but until then this is the best, if inefficient (get the pun?) way to do it...

    So is the most widely used professional renderer, Pixar's RenderMan. But of course you mean internet distributed, which requires HUGE pipes, and somewhat secure protocols, so somone doesnt steal your renders.... I dont really see the need for distibuted computing, or not anymore, after quantum computers appear.

    On a slightly off-topic note, does anyone notice how sony is sucking up to square? They must be really desperate to keep them as an exclusive developer...

    Either way, go check out those final fantasy trailers they are great

    As for all those people posting false information on message boards... Anyone who gets investment information from anonymous sources obviously deserves to lose lots of money.. So please, if you are going to invest based on the messages on these boards, please do something that makes more sense, like giving me all your money...

    Can airplanes be delayed, or rerouted, by feeding bad information into the air traffic control system? Can process-control computers be fooled by falsifying inputs? What happens when smart cars steer themselves on smart highways?

    most of these things are highly preventable...

    DON'T CONNECT THEM TO THE INTERNET!!

    .. and now i gotta go get that book, time to get my mom to make some swedish lemon angels.... hahahah.... ::evil grin::

    uhhh, we are in such a field right now... ohh no.... but, really the field protects much more than it could possibly harm. No radiation.. I agree with space habitat stuff... when are we going to have those orbiting space platforms a la the skyhook from SotE? we could even mine on mars, so we dont waste any more of our precious resources... this is nothing but good news...

    well, you couldnt go faster than light speed, thats for sure.. depending the the sail size to ieght ratios it could be anywhere from much slower, to very close to light speed.

    I would imagine that once the bubble is inflated with plasma, that you would not need anymore fuel, unless you deflated it, but you could catch the gases when you deflate, so that wouldnt be an issue...

    Haven't you heard of inertia? the ship wouldnt stop, until it hit something, or got to another star, and turned on the magbubble brakes... Once something is moving in space, it doesn't stop. Such is the benefit of a air frictionless environment.. So you would have to get to a planet, or a star to stop.

    And one way they could do it with out planets to slingshot around would be to use some type of railgun, which the technology isnt quite ready yet, but it could be soon... I also think railguns would be a much more cost effective to actually get the spacecraft into space. No huge rockets needed, just some bigass magnets, and a ship capable of handling the acceleration...

    .. is that it only goes one way... and once you get a certain distance from the sun, you start going really slow. The 1:600 energy ratio would be quite helpful in using less fuel, and these types of things would be great for one way trips, and as plasma shields for deep space probes and satellites. Satellites that used a smaller bubble(small enough not to catch enough wind to be knocked out of orbit) would be safe from the solor radiation that occasionally knocks out satellite communications.

    .. but way too expensive, I guess the company doesnt wanna lose money, and is betting on nostalgia to sell these things.. Oh well, their choice. I'm not old enough to have been around back then, my first computer was an old (even then!!) Zenith 8088 that I got around '89. Alas, what ever happened to Zenith?
