  1. I Do! on O Where Art Thou, Freeboxen.com? · · Score: 3

He shut down, he was sick of the people trying to
get free laptops and stuff, he meant it to be for people to give away their old hardware, not trade old crappy stuff, and try to ask for Newtons and Palm-Pilots in return.
There was a notice on the web-page after the site
shut down for about ten days.

Is to go as expensive as possible, that way you won't kick yourself 5 years from now for buying it.
Get the highest quality disks, fastest channel (Fiber all the way!) and as much storage as possible,
and maybe, just maybe, it will still be in use 20 years from now, and the company will be glad they put that initial investment in.

  15. RoadRunner on RCN Cable Modem vs. Time/Warner's Road Runner? · · Score: 1

I currently have roadrunner (sitting behind a freesco firewall) and on the dsl-reports speed test I pull 1.5 megabits almost every time.
which means in browser downloads I've seen it hit 384kb's a sec, which roughly translates to that I've downloaded both Mandrake 7.2 cds (standard and extension) in under an hour, with both downloading at about 145kbs.
I would suggest getting a firewall (www.freesco.com) Freesco works great for me, Its a single floppy linux distro, with an amazing install process. I put it on an old p75, and it works perfect. Its all graphical (well kinda command line graphical) install, and you can control it after its set-up from inside your browser, to do stuff like open and close ports, re-boot, and check the system logs.
It also has a small http server, but roadrunner has it in their license agreemeant that you can't host (which is bullcrap, because ADSl lets you, so it is a downside, BTW, does anyone have experience hosting with RR?, is their a way you can make it so they can;t see you?)
Well, anyway, if you want a butt-loada speed for only 40$ a month, go with RR.

  17. Free on Government Takes Control Of The Net; 2000 In Review · · Score: 4

The Web is free, you can get on for free, with mildly annooying ads, or pay for higher bandwidth,
lets leave it like that, not tax it and regulate it.
Example, so many people complain about Porn, why?
Just don't look up "Sex" in a search engine, and it'll never bother you. Don't try to regulate someones for of entertainment (or exercise ;-)
We could just aswell make a big deal out of Warez, or Moviez, or people telling you how to make drugs, or any number of things that is illegal.

  18. What I would do... on Playing MP3s, CDs And The Radio In Your Car? · · Score: 1

I would get a hold of an old P120 or so, slap BEOS in it, attach it to your stereo system, and Whala!
The reason I would choose BEOS is because it doesn't mind getting shut of without shutting down(aka, just flipping the power), and it boots in about 10 seconds.
I believe it supports some radio Tuners, and you can get an Winamp esque program to play CDs and MP3's.

  19. Wine? on Foreign Language Education Software For Linux? · · Score: 1

What about trying to get a program that runs in windows runnning in Wine?
If you look on the system requirments for programs, it sometimes tells you if you'll need Direct-X or not, since that is hard to set-up with wine. But there is alot of programs that don't need it, and would probably be just what you looking for, maybe even if you look on Wines site, you'll find where somebody elso already got one to work.
(Also, you could try VMware, you get a 30day license for free, and every time you want a new license, just sign up for some hot-mail account for them to send you one)
