Well seeing as Yahoo is switching over to php, from C no less! Plus if you want to, you could use slashdot as an example of scripted sites. Of course slashdot at random interval won't load for about 10 or 15 minutes (rarely longer).
Well I'll be a monkey's uncle, it surely doesn't work. I've been trying all morning and nothin'! It fails shortly after disconnecting life support systems...*sigh*
I never had any problems with stability, of course, I use gnome. My only gripe is because of the new club member deal, I have to try and do an ftp install for the first time ever;-).
Doesn't this mean that anyone can post anything regardless of it being true? This bascially undermines the principal of the project, and makes the whole thing invalid. If they actually set it up that way, it's only use will be a good place to store all the predictions that come out before a macworld expo.
I'm beginning to wonder if the industry will be in a far different place than Microsoft envisions 3 years down the line.
Ya like, Linux, OpenBSD, and MacOS X will be what _EVERYONE_ uses, and nobody will be on windows anymore. Then, windows will become a hobbyist OS, and people will start to migrate back to windows just so they can be different.
That's not true. I was charged with building a webiste for my company so the telemarketers (I work at a newspaper) could check the numbers first, I was able to download a list to use a test data 2 months ago. It only took 2 days with php and postgresql to get a searchable index running. You just request a list with the areacodes you are calling and ta'da you get a 13 meg list (for me it's 13 megs), and that's only for about 7 counties in 2 states. As for staggering cost....it's free! What in the world are you talking about? Would anyone be interested in the code? Maybe I could get my boss to release the sq under GPL. Or would anyone want to use our DNC? He might go for that as well, we'd just add your area codes to the list.
well that's a partial reason yes, but no, that's not totally it. The games are also great. I will consistently play soulcaliber or $someSnowBoard game whenever I go there. I tried playing the Xbox but it would freeze for no reason and I have yet to actually get a game _started_ long enough to actually play it *hrmph* I know that the Xbox must work because a ton of people have them, but I just can't get it working. The ps2 would be my second choice, but mainly for the Downhill Domination game, what fun!
They have the gameboy advance you can play those titles on the cube, and really they have good games too! Not to mention (I've said this in other posts) that with all the consoles I've played (at walmart etc...) the camecube is the only one that is _always_ running. The xbox is busted about half the time, and the ps2 is running about 90% of the time. They have a ps1 that is always running also but that's a bit dated now.
I don't know why the xbox was ever in the running. What a crappy console.
I'm asking my wife for a camecube for x-mas, whaddya think the chances are? Maybe we should make a poll:-p
No matter what you do, unless you spend the next 6 months writing a knowledge base on it, will you be able to document every little thing. Just try to make something easy enough for the typical *nix user to be able to re-build it if it gets totally fried and you were hit by a truck on the same day. Expect some calls for the time being until their admins get familiar more with the system.
Yes but then you also have a lot more work to do via patching, and a ton more forensics work to do if a system is compromised. I like to cluster related services services together. I guess I'd be a considered a hybrid.
My firewall runs openbsd, pf, bind 9 (chrooted, primary dns) and snort (chrooted). Snort logs to a monitoring server that is running Mandrake 9.1, postgresql, apache 2, mrtg, some homegrown perl scripts, and nagios. The mail server is running all the mail services as well as dns (to speed up blackhole lookups). It all about clustering the services together that go well, and finding a balance that will allow for optimum network performance.
agreed. This is total BS. I think commercial companies should not responsible for root servers. Just because of things like this. What if Ford was reposible for the roads? Maybe they would put a peg sticking up out of the road that ran along a track in the middle of the lanes and attached to Ford cars to keep them from crashing. That would be innovative too, but then Chevy's and Dodges, and Volwagon's et al, would no longer be able to use the road.
Maybe the DNS system does need some tweaking and updating, but springing the modification on a few hundred million people out of the blue is irresponsible.
I was gonna write this, but since you did, I don't need to. Of course some sort of poll should be tied to it. ie. "I bought this Canon because the lexmark had extra terms attached to it". Otherwise the boycott might not do any good.

Anyone tried this under Wine yet?? :-/
That's easy, use nagios. It what I use and it's great. For the holes it doesn't fill, go try out mrtg. :-)
so what you're suggesting is distributed slashdot? :-)
Don't. It doesn't work.

There's also some nice video footage

Use the "caller pays" thingy, and then talk to them for hours, ask them detailed questions about all of their products.
people are still using java and C++? Did I migrate completely to C# to early??? Dang!

OpenBSD has a neat feature for this that should be mimicked.

Just remember, no documentation == job security.
It also equals no advancement because you are too important in your current role. ie, your in a rut.
oh and try to make it so it doesn't read like stereo instructions :-)

Sold-out Caldera Operatives
I can't tell, are you kidding??? or people were really loading up their cars?
