I retired from IBM after 30 years in mainframes and operating systems.
After retirement I worked two contracts for the Y2K problem. My resumes was in a lot of headhunter databases but have likely been flushed by now.
So why if there is such a thinning of the ranks haven't I got a job? Why have they not been placing ads? Why have no headhunters called my phone?
My years as a systems programmer (previously a hardware CE) on both MVS and VM/SP seem to matter little in this corporate mentality and business world.
Let the suckers belly up then if they are too lazy to realize that many of us are still here and have the skills and knowledge way way way beyond the PeeCeeWeenies.
Ha!
Suck it up you corporate DP exec flakes. Suck it up.
Ethnic diversity, multiculturialism an a bunch of other 'isms' are turning a country that once prided itself on intelligence into a ethnic and cultural slag heap.
Witness the kids hanging around the shopping malls, not exactly a bastion of learning. They wear ugly clothes, insert metal into their body parts, wear 'doo rags', listen to music that isn't music and destroys hearing.
This is DUMB. We are becoming stupid obese diseased and lazy people and seem to be proud of it.
We are lost. UK go for it. Bush is leading many into his "No kid left to learn" program by dumbing everyone down to the lowest common denominator.
I feel for my country and its youth. Such lost opportunities. Such a waste.
I saw your subscriber number and was amazed at how old it was..I then equated this with some belief that you were a savvy person.

Meanwhile its proposed that the net be used to down load movies. Children are downloading huge amounts of MP3. Twitchkiddiegamers are consuming huge amounts of bandwidth....YET you complain when someone wishes to fight spammers with an intelligent tool that consumes a smallish amount of bandwidth.
Get real man.
I run Blue Frog. The amount of bandwidth is quite small and not intensive at all. The usage is broken out over time. Interspersed as it were.
And just who cares if the Chinese Commies are getting their websites blasted anyway. We have to buy their cheap trash at Wally World no thanks to our greedy CEOs and Corps who have zero patriotism.

So who do you believe? No one in CorpAmerica!
There was a huge bloodletting of incredibly talented IT folks back then. Way way off the scale.
Now we hear whining and gnashing of teeth? Let them eat Ding Dongs.
They live by the big lie. The newsies play right into their gameplan.
The guy who wrote 'A FEW THINGS ABOUT SS' has his own view and it once was my view also.
That was before IBM blew my retirement away by various methods of creative accounting and other nefarious schemes.
The result is that I now really have to live on my SS and I didn't plan it that way at all. They offered us a 401K, sure , but it was in the negative earnings area and late in my career.
I always met the plateau and so paid the maximum each year. I wish I could have had the money to invest myself because this is what I saw:
People getting SSI who never worked a day in their life. Farmers suddenly could 'buy in' and had never paid a dime in their lifes. Disabled children then were added and those with whatever seemed to be prevalent thinking on what constitued 'disability'. I knew of on schoolteacher who got SS disability for having headaches. The list goes on and on.
The basic SS benefit was then extended again and again to those who should never have seen a dime of the money paid in by the workers and others.
All the lazy asses who never worked yet could draw should have been refused.
Its out of control now and there will be hell to pay. Do I care? NO! I paid my part and I want it all back with interest and I intend to get it.
The governement made the promise and took my money. I had no choice. So I want it back and with interest.
For the record: I started work in 1957 and retired in 1993 at 55. I intend to live to 90. Its my payback time.
Take all the cheats and the deadbeats off SSI, SS and SS Disability and it will be solvent.
Doesn't matter if you are a millionaire of not. If you paid the withholding you got a right to the disbursement. Those who worked for low wages never paid in near as much as those like me and others yet due to the 'adjustments' to the formulas they get almost as much.
You likely have a WRT54G then if its both B and G.
1. Change you SSID to something other than linksys. You could do a little social engineering and make it something like ohhhhh....SecurityAP or HoneyPot.
2. Turn on 'MAC filtering' and only input your wireless MAC(physical address). This keeps others out and lets you in.
3. Set on WPA. This keep anyone from packet sniffing your transmissions.
You can also check to see who may be using your router via the admin facility(where you do all of the above also).
If you are closer to your own router then your signal should override your neighbors.
Lastly : convince them to button their boxes up also..perhaps by some friendly hacking or whatever.
If all the above fails to work then get line your walls with tinfoil!!

I decided it was a waste of time.
In my view therefore WikiNews sucks big time.
If you have a place for conjecture on the site then don't trash it with your 'supposed'neutrality. By the way who judges the neutrality? A bunch of folks who make the decisions. This is NOT NEUTRALITY. Its bullying in just a new skin but its still the same.
One very small business(150 employees) that I installed some desktops and worked on their mini-mainframe actually went out of business as a result of not upgrading that mini system.
To this date that system never came back online and they reverted to accounting with pen and paper as a result before they finally died.
Why did they not upgrade the firmware? I guess they just didn't believe the hoopla. A year later I fired they system back up for them and it able to run but the date algorithms were still toast.
Today that the heart(Processor Unit) of that IBM system is sitting in my basement and I will soon be hauling it to the landfill. I pulled it out of their dumpster one day when they were cleaning out the office. Its keeping a couple of old Selectrics company along with an IBM PS-1.
My mainframe consulting days are over. IBM is but a memory of 30 years of my life. Today I seek maiTais and margueritas by the beach and ocassionally remember what might have happened.
I won't ever be pulling any more business' asses out of the fire, thank you very much.
This may come as a shock to many but those two field dates are still imbedded in legacy systems and still being stored in archive records to this date.
All that was accomplished was a bandaid in the form of 'windowing' the date. Except for the Social Security Administration not a single vendor or shop that I was aware of in my two years of Y2K consulting gig ever went back and corrected the field sizes of their records in storage. Not a single one. Well maybe a few small shops here and there.
I repeat... Only a windowing algorithm was added and that very same algorithm is in effect in all MSFT Windows OS's currently.
You key in a date and its managed to resolve via a 'windowing' algorithm.
No one had the resources, time or money to go back and change the old records or alter the record fields to acccount for 4 years date fields.
The sliding alogorithms will have to continually be updated and 'slid' to the next date range or 'incorrout output' will result.
In one major Electrical Utility I observed their tape archives , which were honeycombed via a robot system( the vendor name escapes me at the moment) and I turned to the DP manager and asked if he had plans to alter and rewrite all the 2 field dates to 4 field dates. Even though they had only been in business for 20 years or so he claimed it was an impossibility to do so.
My response was that I was willing to undertake installing a new Y2K test mainframe and install all the testing software but he must realize that the dates are still incorrect and can lead to a future problem.
As I proceeded on the consulting contract I was amazed at the sheer amount of ignorance and ineptitude displayed by this shop. It was beyond understanding how they did survive in the end.
The costs were such that massive restructing of employees occurred. Blood was on the floor everywhere. They did survive but only after lots of changes. The testers did find many many problems in the legacy code.
In fact the XXXXX(vendor software) tape utilitities actually bellied up with incorrect dates. At one time we could not even create SCRTCH tapes it was so bad.
The Y2K problem still exists. Its just hidden with clever bandaids.
I made some money. I spent lots of months away from my family. For this the USA industries thanked the Programmers who saved their asses by offshoring and outsourcing their very jobs.
Have to categorize the GenXSlacker crowd with that appellation. Having been someone with a functional brain calling the AOL support means that you may have to revert to chiseling the message on stone and mailing it to them, since it mostly the GenXSlacker crowd they hire.

More like flummery of the worst sort. And bad flummery at that.

They tend to make a mockery of anything resembling real life.
I have to agree with the moniker. Its plain silly.

I don't think you were very deep into mainframes.
Consider then a tape expiration failure causing many tapes to be placed into the scratch pool and reused when they contained valid data.
There are many variations on such a scenario.
I saw some of them. You must have not.
I started coding in the 60's. I worked on mainframes both as CE and as a Systems Programmer.
The failures were extant and numerous. You are wrong.
All Dasdi control labels stored in the VTOC have dates. Do you have any idea what I am talking about? Same for tape labels.
Yes you are missing many points. No , no one cares to explain.
Please do not ever go near a computing system.
Don't even think about them. Don't dream about them. Forget they exist.
I suspect you are in IT management. Right?
So then things are going well up there in the caves in Iraq?
